“Should be so much better.....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2013

This hotel has a location to die for - it sits immediately above one of the nicest beaches we have ever seen, and the views from the hotel are breath-taking......BUT, it should be run by people who appreciate what they have on their hands.

On arrival, we found our room damp, smelly and we spent the first night sleeping on a damp mattress with damp sheets. This was mentioned the next morning, but the management only suggested that we see if it improves in the next day or so...an air freshener was placed next to our bed. We took things into our own hands and sorted the problem out ourselves.

Also, there were extra charges for a safe deposit (25 Euros non returnable), and very expensive internet access.

Another annoyance was the attitude of one of the staff at breakfast near the end of our 10 night stay (we were asked abruptly while taking breakfast why we weren't wearing our all-inclusive bracelets). We weren't all-inclusive guests, and I found the attitude very poor. Otherwise most of the staff were friendly and helpful.

But, the views are out of this world!

We visited this holel while in Crete for future refrence and maybe to stay, as it looks so good it pictures.
Unfortunatly the reality of this hotel does not match its pictures. It looks run down and in need of repair, it seems to be trading on its views. You need to be a mountain goat to get up the hills and to the pool area which is small and not worth the climb.
Rooms were small.
We shall not be staying there any time in the future.
Can't comment on food and service as we only visited.

Myself and my partner stayed here late may this year and well the hotel is excellent
We arranged a sea view upgrade for €50 before we arrived and it is well worth the money
The room contained a kingsize bed along with some other furniture, plenty of wardrobe space and the bathroom had all the mod cons, also free air conditioning the best bit was the view looking over Istron bay and vulsuma beach, in one word amazing
The food is ok and the drinks were served in normal size glasses with was a nice surprise.
We were the only English couple at the hotel but this was in no way a problem as all the staff speak English and the other
Mainly Russian guests were nice
The hotel is very clean ESP around both of the pool areas which had more than enough sunbeds for everyone, but to be honest all the Russians go missing driving the day so you end up with the pool to yourself.
Vulsuma beach is beautiful well worth a visit.
The small town of Istron a bit quite but there is a lovely place called the palace cocktail bar were ther is free wifi and 2 for 1 drinks every night of you get fed up in the hotel and fancy a walk
If you want to rent a car or a scooter then visit magic car rentals they are really helpful and not badly priced ( we had a 200cc scooter for 5 days at a cost of €100).
The bus stop into agios Nicholas is right outside the hotel and they run every hour or so but that it worth the visit
So is spinalonga island lots of history there but don't go on the commercial trips make your way up to plaka and get on locals boat it takes 10 mins and costs €6 each
We have already booked to stay at this hotel again and can't Waite

We had concerns after reading reviews but found little wrong with our holiday. We arrived at 4.30am greeted and made to feel welcome given our room card (we had arranged an upgrade prior to visit for 50 Euro) asked to take our luggage to our room then return to a meal and drink, Our room was very clean and everything worked, we had a small kettle and cups and a very clean fridge. We were on the 3rd floor and had the most wonderful views from our balcony. It is well worth going for a sea view room as the garden/mountian view rooms do have limited views but on a plus the do get the sun. We found nothing wrong with the food and some dishes were outstanding with the most lovely tastes, of course like most all inclusive food it appears that something from lunch has been made into another meal for dinner, it would be a complete waste of good food otherwise. The beer was good and tasted strong, we did not like the red wine but the white was refreshing, did not rate the spirits on all inclusive. Coffee was available at any open bar at no extra cost unless you wanted frappe etc. The beach is wonderful and we could see the fish first thing in the morning from our balcony, it is a trek to the beach and there is nothing wrong with the little tunnel under the round from bottom of the hotel drive. If unfit (like myself) it can make you a little breathless getting back ups the steps which are steep, there is an alternative way if you just walk down the hill towards Istro to the beach car park either way it is worth it. The local bus service is excellent and there are timetables at the bus stops outside the hotel and at reception, if you go to Ag Nik just beware there is a steep hill to the bus station to get return bus. There were not many brits at the hotel, all staff speak English and made us feel welcome. You can have a romantic spa experience for 40 euro well worth the money. We will visit again and take our children next time, well worth the money and the 2 1/2 hour transfer to and from airport.

Room Tip: Seaview rooms well worth extra cost

Very nice room, clean and with a good quality bed, at the far end of the complex but by the swimming pool. Consequently we had noise from the pool and were obliged to keep our net curtains closed. Our Russian is very limited indeed and so we were unable to converse with the rest of the clientelle!! The cheap quality food was from a self-service cafeteria and the 10E evening meal was a disaster. Certainly not worth accompanying with a bottle of wine. , We were very concerned at the design of a square hole in a wall next to concrete steps. This served no purpose whatsover but young children could have walked straight through and fallen some 4 feet on to the concrete below - an accident waiting to happen!! It is very difficult to walk out from the hotel as there are no pavements and the road resembles a grand-prix circuit so you take your life in your hands if you go out for a walk. A visit to the lovely local tavernas for good, inexpensive meals was also a means of getting free wi-fi and thus avoiding absorbitant hotel charges.

Firstly i would like to point out how nice the hotel looks and the location is great , however the food was the same day in..day out , there was nothing to do and the day began by racing up to the pool at 6am to get a lounger to sit by the pool all day..this got very boring and you couldnt wait for the food.
The beach was OK the man and his wife with the cafe were very friendly and you can hire the pedalo which was very cheap however we hired it and we felt the steering wasnt right , low and behold the next day we couldnt loan it because the steering had broken. So instead we lent out his rubber dingy and that was alot of fun.
On a night the view of the sea was outstanding! we often got a drink at the bar and sat all night watching the sun set.
Around and about..
Just down the road was a few bars and restruants which were okay however in one of the toilets we found a beetle which put us completely off.
On one of our days we got a packed lunch made by the hotel for free , and we walked to the bus stop ( 1 mile away) and hopped on the bus to the town , in the town there are masses of shops which was a surprise and to be honest they were very good.
Anyway back to the hotel!
Me and my mum felt sorry for the lady at the pool bar , she worked her socks off while the men laughed at her and often used sexual remarks against her!
The rooms were ok , they consisted 2 beds , a table (one chair) , a tv , a kettle? and a shower.
The cleaner was very tight , they often used the same bedding throughout the week and didnt change the towels everyday.
We took out a international card at the reception which was used to get 1p a min calls from telephone in reception , however this is a lie , we got two calls 8 min each and this used £40.

We would not recommend this hotel for families as they was nothing for the children to do.
We would not recommend this hotel to English people as they was only 1 other family English.
WE WILL DEFIANTLY NOT BE COMING BACK TO THIS DISASTER EVER AGAIN!

Room Tip: Sea View is a great view however you WILL be disapointed if you come!

Although it was a daily maid service the bedding was NEVER changed all week and they had a strict "towels every OTHER day" policy which meant by the evening of the second day the towels were damp
The "All Inclusive" menu at the `so-called 4 star' hotel was absolutely horrendous - examples are:
Paella, served one evening, which comprised of the leftover white rice from lunchtime with some vegetables & spices added to it and chopped up cheap crabsticks & the leftover hotdogs from breakfast & lunch! Chef's `Special' Omelette also included the leftover hotdogs, a dish they served as "Gordon Blue" was breadcrumbed reformed chicken with the leftover continental meats (from breakfast) inside!! Basically the chef did NOT waste anything and `incorporated' the leftovers into another dish. There was nothing Cretan or Greek about the menu at all - all the produce was of poor & cheap quality and by the middle of the week even the salad vegetables started tasting mouldy!
We were that disgusted with the food quality, by the Wednesday we started eating at the local Tavernas, where, finally, we DID start to experience Cretan and Greek cuisine.

The All Inclusive drinks package was VERY dissapointing too - the draught beer was of a cheap quality and had a strong chemical taste, the supposed local spirits and wines offered on the All Inclusive deal were of cheap quality and were watered down and suspected cooking versions and not typical drinking beverages.

This was a very disappointing holiday from beginning to end.

In short we had a thoroughly dreadful time at the Mistral Mare, after having saved all year and looking forward to this holiday for months.
.
