“Agios Nikolaos: Mistral Hotel: "The locals call it Alcatraz!!!”
Reviewed 18 October 2010

we stayed at the mistral last week (the locals call it alcatraz)! The location was nice, the beaches ok, the hotel itself, well presented and clean, it was some of the staff (not the bar staff) that were rude and unhelpful. It was described as adults only but there were some children there. The all inclusive package was a disgrace, you could only get coffee at breakfast or an hour in the afternoon otherwise you had to pay 2euro for a tiny cup, if you would like to make your own there are no fridges in rooms (as stated in hotels description), to chill milk unless you are willing to pay for a fridge. the main bar is not open all day, and closes ridiculously early at 10.45pm where you cannot accumulate drinks and have very long queus due to the one bartender who has to pour all the drinks, make cocktails, collect glasses etc. The food was the poorest choice we have ever seen and we have been all inc several times, the offering of lukewam meat, cold chips and soggy pasta was unappetizing and catered for the german palate, all the brits felt the same and many of us ate out at the local tavernas. Also dinner was cleared away before 8pm so every day was cut short in order to get ready for the evening feast...not!!! Breakfast was not worth getting up early for! and lunch no better. Holiday companies would be best advised not to send brits here

MISTRAL MARE HOTEL - ISTRAN- AGIOS NIGOLAOS - 20th SEPTEMBER TO 30TH SEPTEMBER

ALL INCLUSIVE! I DON’T THINK SO.

We booked a ten night all inclusive holiday through direct line holidays, in what appeared looking on the internet to be a reasonably nice economy room, with a mountain view, we live by the sea so did not think in necessary to pay extra for a sea view, a mountain view would make a pleasant change.

After a long two hour transfer of 75 km from Heraklion airport, and dropping of other holiday makers at various points, this was far too long a transfer in our estimation. We were greeted by the hotel receptionist who immediately informed us that they had a cancellation for a Sea View room and offered to upgrade us from Mountain View to Sea View at a cost of 70 euros. After having read comments on Trip Advisor (after we had already booked) that it was worthwhile to upgrade to a Sea View, that we would look at our Mountain View room first before deciding. When we saw the room we were absolutely appalled at the size and condition of the room, although it had a double bed it was only the size of a single room, the bathroom was tiny and extremely shabby, and that was before we opened the curtains to show the Mountain View, this was no more than a Mountain wall almost touching the glass, no view whatsoever, a small square of patio was available, but for what we don’t know. Little did we know that later in the holiday we would meet up with a single lady travelling alone, who had already booked a sea view, went through the same procedure and had to pay 90 euros to update to a sea view she had already paid for. Fortunately she had the sense to pay by credit card so that she could claim it back on her return. It would appear from our experience that they are showing the same disaster room to lots of people to make them upgrade, nothing but a scam!!

When we returned to the reception and politely told them what we thought, we were informed that they were shocked at our response as no one had ever complained before! (They definitely did during our stay because we spoke to many of them). Reception advised us that we had booked economy so we were getting what we paid for! We then went to look at the Sea View room, and the view was amazing, however, the room was only slightly better because it was larger, it still lacked a welcome feel. On return to reception the room was then offered to us at the reduced offer of 50 euros, this we accepted as we had no other choice, we had no holiday rep, or anyone we could complain to.

That evening we went into dinner and was again extremely disappointed to find that the dining room resembled a staff canteen rather than a pleasant dining room where you could relax and enjoy your evening meal, it was like a free for all fight for food, no waiter service whatsoever, and the hardworking staff cleared the tables wheeling a trolley around constantly. As for the menu it was not appetising in the slightest, hence, we ended up eating out seven nights out of ten. On the last night of our stay we counted twenty yellow wrist bands in our restaurant alone, and considering the hotel has one hundred bedrooms, I would estimate that to be ten percent of their visitors to be eating out in one restaurant alone.

As for entertainment there was none whatsoever, they play compact discs, Greek music one night and disco the next and flash a few disco lights if you are lucky! But as far as entertainment goes that is it, and the music is so loud you cannot even talk to your fellow guests, so of to the rock hard mattress for a sleepless night until morning, back to the canteen for a rubbish free for all breakfast!
Pool side towels are not even available to use or rent, and a notice informing you that the room towels are not to be used at the pool means more expense to purchase beach towels unless you remember to bring your own of course.

After our first nights stay we felt it necessary to use our bath mat and a towel to mop up the badly leaking shower. On the following day after the room had been serviced we noted that the soggy wet towels were still in a heap and had not been changed, therefore, we asked the maid if we could have replacements, we left the dirty towels on the trolley and took replacements, minutes later reception called and informed us like naughty children that towels were only changed three times a week, and that we would not be allowed any the following day, it was three days before we received anymore. We had told them that we had to use them because of the shower leaking, to be reprimanded again that the towels were not to be used for cleaning the floor, and if we had a problem with the shower we should report it, needless to say nothing was done for the whole of our stay.

At the swimming pool, someone had emptied an ashtray into the showers, three days later the showers were still dirty. Two electrical light fittings which are supposed to light up the swimming pool from under the water, were hanging on by a flex and floating around in the pool for the duration of our stay.

As for the reception area, we have never stayed at a hotel where so many arguments between guests and staff have been going on. Clearly a lot of guests had complaints and felt as we did. We felt as if we wanted to complain a lot more, however, it would have appeared that we were just being a nuisance.

On a positive note we would say that the few staff worked extremely hard and very long hours, it would appear that they work a twelve hour day.

To put the top hat on it our transfer back to the airport took two hours and forty five minutes, picking up two people at a time and possible twelve different stops.

Although we loved Crete and the view from our room, we will return to Crete one day quite soon, But NEVER step foot in the Mistral Mare, we would rather stay in Faulty Towers.

Now that we have arrived home we feel that we have been ripped off. This hotel is run on a shoe string budget providing the minimum service necessary.

It is fortunate that we were in a position to be able to afford to go out and eat, and have a reasonable holiday. Many people will have saved all year and have no choice but to put up with it.

We' re a family with 2 young children and we visited the fantastic island of CRETE.
We stayed in MISTRAL MARE HOTEL in ISTRO -AGIOS NIKOLAOS LASITHIOU.
The hotel was fabulous . It had 2 swimming pools, billiard, fitness center ,a very nice restaurant (with music at nights) ,very friendly , kind and helpful staff.
It has a wonderful view to the sea and the hotel is built in front of the best beach in Crete which is Voulisma Beach with azure - green water and white fine sand.
In the beach you can go on feet(it has some steps).
The rooms are very clear, modern and beautiful with nice view and all the facilities.
The food was well- cooked , delicious , clear and it has variety. The "chef " was continuously on the buffet as a supervisor and give the order to renew each food which had finished.
The perfecture of Lasithiou is very nice and tropical and you can go many many excursions in beautiful beaches and villages with palms.
It is the ideal hotel for everyone who desire relaxing holidays with quality!

this hotel is in a lovely location if you want to get away from it all with some lovely views over the bay. It is clean & staff are friendly (if you treat them with the respect they are due).
The downside is the hotel operates mainly for the german tourist market and therefore all the notices in the bedrooms about the hotel & services etc are in German. The clientel also leave a lot to be desired. As it was all inclusive it was a free for all at breakfast, dinner & lunch with other guests not having an idea of how to queue or ask staff politely for drinks they require.
The all inclusive package was not as good as other ones i have tried, as drinks were not always available at the bar (during the day unless lunchtime you had to traipse up to the pool to have a beer from a plastic cup!!) and you couldnt take drinks to the room with you, if you wanted a drink when getting ready for dinner. They also say snacks available when meals arent on but unless you like hot dogs or chees & ham toasties then you will go hungry. Again you had to go to the pool area on the roof for these.
Also on the website they say an a la carte restaurant also operates at a charge-this never opened the whole 10days of our stay.
The location is great for a quiet stay, just don't expect too much !!!

Basically if you dont eat there , NOT EVEN BREAKFAST, you'll have a fine stay but i'm sure that for the same price one can get MUCH better.

Room with sea view was big enough, clean enough, great bed and pillows, wonderfull pillows and bed.

The beach even though not of easy access is fantastic. Its better to go with a car if you have mobility problems to enter on the beach by easier accesses. And anyway as the hotel is not near anything having a car will compensate for this.

I didnt find the staff friendly at all, especially the owners. But if you don't eat there or stay much time there, who cares.

Theres very stupid rules, like the breakfast and dinner finish at 9am/pm.
And the pool closes like at 7:30 or 8:00pm and then you cant acces it not even to see it or enjoy the view :P

The dinner finishes at 9 so they close the lights at night even if theres still people eating LOL
I'm not vegetarian but basically was it while i was there since the meants and fishes were looking so horrible i always went for tsatiki, fries and salad and for some disgusting pizzas and pies that sometimes had only vegetables :P

On breakfast theres a sign on the juices machine warning hotel guests to not steal juice to bottles, i strongly advise that you dont since the (fake) juice is the worse (fake juice) i ever had.

In the afternoon only the pool bar is opened and actually theres no one there lol we waited 15 minutes then went to buy a beer on the small store.

The beer was watered so we always ordered bottled beer.

I didnt understand if it is possible to have a snack like in the mid afternoon or after dinner, but if it is they try the maximum they can to keep this feature secret lol :P

Restaurants in the village bellow are fine.

I am French and flight attendant, he is Greek and also travel a lot for his work and it is the first time of our experience that we met so many negative points for an hotel.
1) Very nice location and beach
2) Very bad service at the front desk, rudeness and primitiveness. It was easy to fight with the manager, he live for that. We asked from the beginning to have a sea view room and we got a view on the mountain gully surrounded by small bushes and bugs. We changed room after 2 days and with our big surprise they move our bath towels and sheets from the first room to the other (after 2 days using them). We first thought that they forgot to remove the towel from the previous customer, but after clarification NO its was ours. For a 4 stars hotel it is a very bad move. Do not stay in room 308.
The cherry at the top of the cake, they ask us to check out one day in advance...I mean in all hotels you check the moment that you know you are leaving for good...after discussion , they pass under our door the full hotel regulation...and force us to pay in advance...
3) the food was a disaster, low quality and small portion. Be careful eating the ice-cream and drinking the synthetic orange juice from the breakfast buffet.
I post the appreciation to only inform you and help you to enjoy your stay in Creta. We did have a nice stay because we are a pacifist couple in love and we were looking to have a good time and Creta is the perfect place for that.
