“Cretan family affair”

This little family taverna in the town of Agios Nikolaos seemed a bit off the tourist track, so all the better. We were rather early for lunch by Greek standards, but there didn’t seem to be a problem. A covered courtyard with trees and shrubs and electric fans provided very pleasant surroundings for a simple and inexpensive lunch of a cabbage salad, meatballs, spinach and herb parcels and delicious sautéed broad beans, with entertainment provided by the owners sweet young grandchildren, who seemed as much at home at the restaurant as at home! Despite the delightful family atmosphere, perhaps I would have liked to see a slightly more “cared for” dining area in terms of cleanliness, but that’s just me. Would recommend for those after something traditional during their Cretan visit.

Aouas is a 4 min walk away from the touristic scenery of the city. That means: very few tourists and many Greek people can be found in the restaurant.
The plates are typical Greek. The Moussaka was fresh made, I can recommend pork with onions too. Dakos is moderate.
Prices are very low and that's why I rated this taverna 'very good'. We paid 29 euro's for 3 persons, including wine and water. Big eaters probably pay 5 - 8 euro's more.
My tip: bring some Deet for nasty mosquito's, especially during the hot season!

We ate here twice in 1 week. This restaurant is on the main road from the lake to the hospital. We were the only tourists eating there on a Saturday night amongst tables full of locals.

The food is simple, good, Greek cooking. With the tourist trap of the lake, this restaurant is how a local Greek restaurant should be.

If you want proper home cooked local cuisine please visit this restaurant!

This is a typical Greek family run taverna serving up good Greek food. Service is good and the garden provides a nice atmosphere. Although nothing special as such, in a chic town of trendy and expensive places this is a nice change. Good food and low prices.

This restaurant is very good for traditional greek food, and is run by a family. It is quite basic, but the food is excellent and very reasonably priced
