“" IN OUR FIFTIES AND FELT YOUNG "”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2013

Went to Agios Nikolaos to attend a friends wedding at a different hotel.
We booked the Hermes through Thomas Cook and paid the extra for a sea view room, this was well worth the extra cost, we were on the 7th floor and had no noise at all. Beautiful view of the bay and cruise ships dock in the port here which we could see from our room. The room was dated but very comfortable, we found the beds fine and the fridge in the room was very welcome. Also the safe is free. Towels and bed linen changed regularly by a very happy and smiley maid. The food was good and plentiful, they had 3 BBQ's during our stay which were all nice. The pool here is quite small with half of it being extremely deep. During our first few days there were no problems getting a sun bed but, by our last few days it was very very busy with not enough sun loungers for all the guests.
Agios Nikolaos is lovely, plenty of shops selling a variety of goods. ( Shops selling fur coats which we never saw anyone buying ).The lake area is beautiful and surrounded by bars and restaurants.
The transfer from the airport to the hotel was 2+ hours which would put us off visiting this resort again.
We are in our fifties and felt comparably young as this hotel caters mainly for Saga guests and older couples.
If you don't mind the very long transfer to the hotel and back then this is a really nice resort.

Room Tip: High floor sea view room is a must

Everything about this hotel works well. The staff are helpful and friendly, the food is excellent and varied, they have lots of special meals- Italian nights, Asian, BBQ and fish market. I can thoroughly recommend the Kalamari. The hotel manager is always walking about with a smile checking everything is going ok. Special mention must go to Koulla and the chef at the Snack Bar. Their pizza and Kalamari are delicious.
The location is also spot on, two minutes takes you into town for shopping or a Frappe and watch the world, and his brother go by.
The submarine boat is a must and I have good pics of a curious hammerhead turtle peering back at my wife through the inch thick plexiglass. Probably recognised her from a previous existence.
We had a great two weeks.
We did not pay for a sea view which was our fault. The hotel is situated in a built up area and Ag. Nik. Is very hilly. So the view we had from the rear of the hotel was three dustbins, a car park/dumping ground and lots of locals windows and verandas 20 feet away. We could have joined in with some of the locals family arguments.
We did try to pay for an sea view when we arrived at the Hermes but kept being told to come back tomorrow until the chap at reception was not at work after arranging to see us that morning.
A great holiday, great hotel staff, great food and great resort just remember the sea view.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Iberostar Hermes and have had a wonderful holiday. The hotel is dated and although the rooms could do with updating they are kept very clean and add to the character of the place. The friendly staff and the beautiful food make up for it. Ve, the Entertainments girl is lovely and tries very hard to involve guests. No extra cost for Safe, air conditioning or pool towels which makes a change. We stayed half board and the choice for breakfast and dinner was amazing. I cannot comment on the drinks as the only drinks we had in the hotel were at dinner. Although there were a few children staying at the hotel I do not think this hotel is very child friendly - the pool is quite deep. Agios Nikolaos is a lovely resort with lots to do and see. I would recommend a boat trip to Spinalonga - very good value. There are some pleasant little bars and restaurants around the lake and the harbour.
We paid extra for a sea view and were on the 2nd floor - this was fine but a little noisy with the doors open - I would recommend a higher floor and definitely worth paying for a sea view.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor with a sea view.

I have just returned from a week at this hotel. This resort was chosen as my friend and I had both read Victoria Hislop's book The Island and we wanted to visit Spinalonga, the island that was a leper colony until 1957.
The hotel is smart in appearance and staff are helpful. On arrival there was a basket of fruit in our room-don't know whether this is general or not.
We were in room 703 which is perfect for a sea view and for watching the evening entertainment if you want to sit on your balcony. The down side to the rooms on this side of the hotel is that you can still hear the entertainment when your patio door is closed.
The pool area is small with not many sunbeds. I think in the height of the season this will be a big problem when the hotel is full. Towels are provided but aren't very big and do not cover the whole of the bed.
There is a kettle in your room and reception will bring up milk if you request it or they will give you some in the restaurant. There was bottled water in our fridge on arrival but it is not automatically replaced. But you can get bottles from the restaurant.
There is no clothes airer so if you are wanting to wash any small items it might be useful to bring a travel clothes line with you.
Room safe is free.
Wifi is available free everywhere in the hotel-even round the pool. You just need to get login and password from reception.
We were all inclusive but if you want premium drinks you pay 50% of listed prices. Same thing if you want snacks other than meal times-poolside snack bar you pay 50% of listed price.
We bought two gin and tonics at a local bar and it cost 12€ this seemed to be a reasonable price for these drinks.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants within 5mins walking distance so if you stay B & B you would have plenty of choice. A meal would cost about 10€.
Good choice of food in main restaurant-especially the fresh bread on a morning. Cooked breakfast options are not very imaginative with the usual bacon, eggs sausage(of the hot dog variety) beans tomatoes etc.
If you intend to go to Spinalonga book strip in the town. We booked ours on the Internet with First Choice(who we booked holiday with)this was a big mistake. It was advertised as Guided tour of island, two hours on beach with BBQ lunch then free time in Elounda. When we docked at the island it was very difficult to get ashore and anyone with walking difficulties or with children in a buggy would find this difficult. Very rocky uneven ground. All the boats seem to arrive together and the beach is actually a small shingle area with no sunbeds or umbrellas-no shade. The food is pork chop with salad or veggie option. This cost £43 and it is not worth the money. A guided tour of the island alone from the town is only 15€.
There is not a lot of daytime entertainment. Only one Star Friend(if you've stayed at previous Iberostar hotels you will understand this) eg Keep fit in gym. Cocktail game in poolside bar.Darts, ping pong, aqua gym, yoga. My previous stays at Iberostar hotels have always been on the Caribbean where the is a huge animation team and many activities taking place all day.
If you want a quiet holiday this is probably the place for you. The guests are mainly 50+. There are no real facilities for children so I would not class this as a family hotel. Many of the quests were the with Saga.
Evening entertainment was ok eg magician(if you like that sort of thing) Folk dancers. A German band one night-which was ok but they did not speak English and there weren't many German guests!
Good hotel for a quiet holiday and near to the town. Local bus stop is near hotel.

This hotel is very dated in desperate need of updating in all areas, lifts are ear noisy and in my view dangerous at times, no sensors on doors, sea view rooms give excellent views , but are very noisy as the entertainment ( when on goes on til 11:30 pm, the all inclusive package is polite to say very confusing, you can only drink free at certain bars at certain times if to want to drink for example a whiskey a local whiskey is free for all inclusive but costs 5 euros to anyone else, if you want a ballantines whiskey you pay 3 euros extra, for anyone else it costs 6 euros, why can't you pay the extra this goes on throughout the bar list, there is a bar connected to the hotel some staff say it has nothing to do with the hotel but all the menus and staff uniforms are iberostar, if you are all inclusive they say you can have 50% discount very nice of them, the hotel seems set up to get as much money as possible. There is not enough sun beds available unless you are up at stupid o'clock you will miss out because the sunbathing area is to small for the size of the hotel.
The area is spectacular the sights are fantastic, but without sounding like a skinflint it is very very expensive place and if all of Greece is the same hiking up prices then they will never get out of trouble , there are some good points to this hotel the food is very good and it is in a prime location , but I'm afraid we will not be back

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are the best but again at a cost, soom city view rooms appear to look onto another bu...

We recently returned home from a 2 week stay at this hotel and just had to write a review. This hotel surpassed our expectations. When we first walked through the doors I thought 'Wow'. And when we saw the room we were delighted. We had paid extra for the sea view and it did not disappoint. There were nice extras like a fridge in the room and a free safe. Also they provide towels for use by the pool. The room itself was spacious and they had kindly provided a mattress topper which I had requested in an E-mail.
We were in for a treat when we went for food. The choice is amazing and everything I tried tasted delicious. We had thought that we might try one of the tavernas in Aghios but the food at the hotel was such a high standard that we didn't bother.
The hotel itself is in a wonderful position, just an easy 5 to 10 minute stroll to the centre. I loved Ag Nik. It's a beautiful place.
The staff were all, without exception, friendly courteous and helpful. My husband had need of a doctor on holiday and the receptionists were quick to assist. They had a doctor there swiftly. I also had a headache one day and asked where I could buy aspirin. The receptionist said all the pharmacies were closed as it was Sunday but she gave me 2 tablets for which I was most grateful. All the staff are friendly. We liked Koula who works in the snack bar. She was always friendly and we enjoyed a chat with her. But I have to say we found all the staff friendly.
To sum up, we loved this hotel. As far as we are concerned this is a great hotel, great location, great food and fantastic staff.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view room and request a room on a higher floor.

Myself and my husband stayed at the Hermes in May 2013, it was our first All Inclusive experience. We were after a relatively cheap, relaxing break in the sun. - We paid extra for the sea view balcony which I must say was well worth it, we got a beautiful view and a nice private balcony. We were several floors above the road but with the patio door closed there was absolutely no noise from the road as previous stated by other travellers. - No sign of the smoke in the corridors either, as I read in a previous review. - They must have taken note of that complaint!!

We arrived in the evening after they had stopped serving dinner, but found fresh food and water in the fridge waiting for us which I thought was a nice touch.

Rooms are a bit dated but very clean and are serviced every day, with clean towels if required. - The hotel provides towels for the beach/pool and sun loungers by the pool are free. - You do have to pay about €2.50 a day for a sunlounger on the beach though.

The variety of drinks available are excellent, all cocktails are included, and the bar staff are very friendly and obliging. - they work very hard as the bar is mainly table service. - Even in the day time you can get drinks served to your sunlounger!

Food was good and varied and they made an effort to do different foods every day, and there was always at least one Greek dish on the menu. They also did several BBQ evenings in a week.

This isnt really a hotel that caters for children, so I'd say families should steer clear. The entertainment is all adult-based and the pool is a basic pool without any slides, even the shallow end is waist high on an adult.

If you are after a good quality lazy break on All inclusive then I can't fault it really. - Don't go expecting 5* luxury because you wont get it, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: Definitely pay the extra for a sea view when you book, it is cheaper than upgrading upon arrival.
