This was the fifth time we have stayed in Kalithea Apartments and very little has changed. Maria the housekeeper is still working tirelessly, meeting & greeting with a smile and generally keeping the place together. On this occasion there were many other friendly guests including an author 'Richard Clark' who has written a book 'Crete ; A notebook - journeys through a mystical landscape'. The fig tree below our room didn't bear fruit this year which was a pity, however there were plentiful grapes and pomegranites to make juice. Altogether it was a very pleasant stay and Maria made it for us yet again. The restaurant across the road was excellent as usual.

I spent 7 nights in the Kalithea Apartments during September. I can't fault the experience at all, from the moment I walked up the driveway and was greeted by the lovely Jan - she quickly took my voucher and showed me to my room on the top level. She warned me about the steps, but said the view from the top was worth it - she wasn't wrong. I had apartment 16, which offered stunning views down into Agios Nikolaos, and also down towards Elounda.

After un-packing, I went to find out a bit more about the area. Jan was incredibly helpful (I was already sensing a theme here!), giving me copies of the bus timetables - advice on where to wait for them, and how long they took to arrive. She also advised on the best things to do in the local area, and informed me that she was able to book various tours and trips - I didn't try these myself (not enough time) but heard good things about them from others. As I was travelling alone, she also suggested the associated take-away restaurant 'Twins' if I didn't fancy travelling out on my first night - as I was looking to just relax, I decided to place an order. The food was mostly Italian (pizza and pasta!) but was delicious, by no means authentic Greek but great for your first night if you arrive later on. It's also worth noting the the apartments share ownership with a few businesses in the local area, which entitles guests to a discount on certain things, so be sure to ask about this as it's worth having if you're on a budget.

As for the quality of the accommodation - you get what you pay for. The rooms are clean, but basic. There's nothing fancy like televisions, but the rooms have a small kitchenette with two rings and a kettle, plus various utensils. There's also a small, clean but worn bathroom. Like others, I found the shower pressure to vary greatly and hot water almost non-existant but given the temperature outside, this wasn't a great loss. The beds were comfortable, but only one pillow was provided - luckily, I was travelling alone so just took the one off the second bed. Maria - the maid - worked non-stop and kept the rooms cleaned, towels and sheets were only changed once during the week, however. Maria also cleaned rooms at quite unusual times, including after 1630 on one occasion - when I was already back in my room getting ready to go out for the evening.

During the day, there were always plenty of sun loungers and chairs available round the pool (which Maria also kept immaculate!). Jan provided a breakfast and snack service, which was excellent considering the limited space she had at her disposal. Drinks and snacks were reasonably priced - around €2 for soft drinks, €3.50 for a large Mythos beer. Breakfast was €4-6 depending on your choice (the Greek breakfast is great!) and lunchtime snacks ranged from €2-6, with a good choice available. The shop mentioned in previous reviews has been closed, however, so a trip into Elounda is necessary to get things to eat and drink in your room.

Overall, I had a great time at Kalithea - and I can't fault the people who work there, especially the lovely Jan - who made me feel very welcome as a single traveller. The accommodation is a little basic and tired, but given the cheap rate, it's fine and does the job. The location and views are second to none, though I would probably hire a car if I returned there again - as relying on buses and taxis was a pain at times.

Room Tip: If you are travelling as an individual or couple, the twin rooms on the top level provide the best views.

Just got back last night from a 7 day stay at the Kalithea apartments, my first time ever in Crete, loved every minute of it and would definitely go back there again...The apartments are fine!! basic yes..spotless yes!! service first class!!! and with views to die for!! .... The pool is cleaned every day, the two very hard working ladies there... Maria who does all the cleaning and linen changing and Jan (who is English and from London) well!! what a lovely lady she is, she is so chilled out and extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble she does the cooking and as far as I am concerned with the facilities she has, produces excellent hot breakfasts and snacks...(dinner is not an option here)..the place is home from home as far as I am concerned, I was a single lady holidaying on my own and was made to feel really welcome...met some really lovely people who made sure I had someone to go dining and shopping with!! Perfect!! and Nicos is a lovely and excellent Bar Host in the evenings...especially with the Raki lol .. give it a try, just like to say its not really a place for young children more for couples and singles and older family types..and also gay friendly..
The apartments are between two towns Elounda the nearest and Agios Nicolaos the furthest, both easy to get to by bus or Taxis, there is a small mini market about a half hour walk downhill but you need to be very careful and watch the traffic... For me personally I liked Elounda the best, its so pretty and has wonderful bars and shops and places to eat all at reasonable prices, there is something for every budget... to get to Elounda was 1Euro 65 by bus each way and 7 Euros by Taxi each way...if you stay here try and organise taxis between 2-4 people which cuts down the costs...be careful though!! the last bus from Elounda is 9.am!!! I had a lovely holiday and was really happy to be at the Kalithea apartments, if you do your research first you cant be disappointed!!

Room Tip: If you have problems with steps then ask for a room nearer to the pool.. I stayed in a Maisonette which had 2 beds in a room downstairs and 1 bed upstairs..close to the pool (room 33) this room had a fabulous view and sun most of the day... the only downside was that the fridge was a bit noisy...but unplugged it a night!! problem solved...

This is my third year back at Kalithea Apartments and it just gets better every year, it was so lovely seeing Maria and Nikos again, they are a great part of your stay here. Also nearly all of the people we met there were fab.
On to the apartments, everything you need is there, really you would only want to sleep in the apartment with facilities for drinks and easy meals that are quite simple to prepare and cook with the basic hobs, You would really want to spend the rest of the time exploring the island, this year my partner and I decided to do a bit more, we went on the Safari day trip, which was out of this world and Andreas was a brilliant guide, we also did the Cretan night which once at the venue was amazing.
There is so much more to do over there, we had 3 weeks there and we still have more things to do again next year.
Places to Eat that we tried new this year included, Poulis (elounda) if you like you seafood and fish, this is a big must, also on the way into Ag Nik is Avra's very good food and pleasantly priced and if you like your Meze's, Chrisofyllis in Ag Nik down by the beach is fab. .If you wish to stay close to the apartments then the restaurant at Adrakos Aparmtnets is lovely, especially when they do the clay oven meals at the weekend.
For 3 weeks my partner and I paid a mere £470 each,, £350 ish each was for the flights, so to only pay £120 each for the apartments for 3 weeks is definitely better value for money.

Every year we have grown closer and closer to Maria and Nikos, to end our holiday on a lovely note, Nikos invited us to go back for the winter (around Jan time) for fishing, wine and to enjoy the real Cretan life, fingers crossed we can make it then, if not defo the year after, A big thankyou to Nikos and Maria xxxx

We stayed here for 1 week mid August, in a 2 bedroom apartment, but beware, the 2 bedroom apartment turned out to be a split level 1 bedroom apartment with a bed added in the lounge area upstairs, the air con unit was in the downstairs bedroom [ cave, as it became known!] leaving the rest of the apartment unbearable especially at night.

Everything in the apartments is very worn & tired.

Very basic kitchen, no microwave or toaster, only 1 of the 2 cooker rings were working and these were very inadequate.

Pool area is nice, loungers available most days, with a snack bar.

Car hire is essential otherwise you will have to pay for taxi/bus every day which does add up by the end of your holiday.

The poor dog tied up upset me, could not understand why the man who owned it did not take it home with him.

I have had mixed feelings about this holiday since I arrived home, I enjoyed the break away and Crete is lovely, the other people who we met really made our stay enjoyable, but I would not stay at Kalithea again it is just to run down with very little to offer on site.

The truth is that you get what you pay for and it would be worth paying a little extra and going else where.
