Kalithea Apartments

Ok. This is not a five star accommodation, no doubt, and it takes a moment to accept the fact that your bathroom was build in the twenties and haven't seen a decorator since. The kitchenette is rather challenging if you actually want to cook something (silly you, you're on holiday!) and there isn't a lot of space to store your food shopping. And if you want it very clean, then you better do it yourself. What else, ah yes, the road can be a bit noisy at times. You won't get far without a car; Greek roads are not the safest to walk on.

But the view from the apartments is to die for, the goats in the opposite field provide a lovely soundtrack to your holiday with their bells, the bed is very comfortable and the pool area is very pleasant. You can test your Swedish or Welsh by borrowing books from reception's library. The staff are friendly and helpful, and may, occasionally, invite you for a small glass of homemade raki.

The weather will probably be glorious, so after a couple of days you'll feel like all worries of this world are leaving you. You will happily introduce Greeks' laid back attitude to life and ignore small things of no importance, such as fridge pretending to be a launching space shuttle. After two weeks you will have a serious problem with leaving the place, the bells, and the Swedish literature.

I'd happily go back to Kalithea. Really good value for money.

Good advice: do your food shopping in Lidl's in Agios; food prices in other supermarkets in Agios Nikolaos and Elunda are just ridiculous.

Just returned from a spring holiday in Crete. We were not able to spend the entire time in Kalithea as it appeared to be fully booked. This was not the case and it would appear that UK agencies hold back on cheaper accommodation as they do not make enough commission!
The canopies on the pool parasols have been replaced and looked very smart. The pool was pristine and the gardens appeared to be well maintained. Nikos was his usual self welcoming and full of fun. Maria has indeed left so the apartments are not up to her standard but hey, what do you want for a tenner a night? All in all a top choice for a budget holiday especially if you have children.

This is never going to be a luxury holiday but if you want a good, clean basic self catering apartment give this one a go. It has the most amazing views, in both directions. Set at the top of a hill mid-way between the little town of Agios Nikolaos (please don't let the locals hear you call it Ag Nik!!) and the beautiful fishing village of Elounda, Kalithea is quite a surprise. Expecting not much from the price we paid, we were pleased to be dropped of at a pretty white painted and red tiled complex. Yes its a tad hilly, with quite a few steps up to the apartments, but unless you have walking difficulties this place will fit the bill. We enjoyed it so much we came back this year. We were sorry to find that the staff had changed, the amazing Maria had retired and Jan, who was so friendly and helpful last year had not managed to make it back this season. However, even though we got there a week too early for the season, and not much was open, it was still as good as we remembered. I would suggest not going until mid-May, as the season starts then and it is obvious that the towns and villages around are suffering from the financial climate in Greece. Coach and Boat trips and Cretan evenings were cancelled and even the little Noddy train didn't start until the 2nd week of our stay. Still, the apartment was clean, 2 twin rooms and a sofabed in the lounge area - and all for 67Euros for the whole apartment for the week!! Its a lot more expensive later in the season but early or late it cant be beaten for value. Please don't try and book it on their website though, costs far too much. Try Hotels4U.com so much cheaper! I have to say this place is great for a base, hire a car and explore and you have to see Spinalonga (read the book The Village by Victoria Hislop) but treat yourself to one of the many Tavernas in Elounda or Ag Nik - you really wouldn't want to cook in your apartment, anything more than a boiled egg would be a real challenge. But then what can you expect for 67 Euros.

Room Tip: If you have a problem with steps ask for a room by the pool - the views are brilliant wherever you a...

Fantastic view! We arrived late at night, opening the shutters the next morning brought out a gasp. Not on the beach, but there was a good bus service and we hired a car for trips further afield. Facilities were fine and staff very friendly and helpful. A steep site, so maybe not so good for people with poor mobility or families with very young children.

It is cheap and the view is magnificent but.... Maria has left and no one is there to keep things going. We had no hot water, half the lights in the apartment didn't work and the cleanliness was not as it should be. The apartment badly needs an upgrade and the gardens were not looked after. We had been before two years ago but we won't be returning as it will only get worse. Such a shame because it used to be a perfect spot.

The best thing in this hotel is the view! I believe that every room has a good view and also pool area is nice, there are many plants, flowers around. Hotel is located about 6 km from Agios Nikoalos and 4 km from Elounda (it's not comfortable to go to beaches, bars or tavernas on foot, you need a car, a taxi or a bus). There's a small kitchen in the room, but it's quite rusty and didn't seem very clean, so we only used an electronic kettle to make tea and the fridge, we didn't cook anything in the room. If someone is partying outside or in the other room, it's very difficult to sleep, it sounds like it's a party in your room! But the last two nights we were the only guests in this hotel (at the end of October), so we could have a calm sleep, felt like VIP and could have pool area all for ourselves :) If you are in the mood for climbind and hiking, you can go up from the hotel to the hilll and from the top of it you can see both Elounda and Agios Nikolaos - the view was very beautiful and it's not difficult to go up there.

Room Tip: All rooms have good views.

This was the fifth time we have stayed in Kalithea Apartments and very little has changed. Maria the housekeeper is still working tirelessly, meeting & greeting with a smile and generally keeping the place together. On this occasion there were many other friendly guests including an author 'Richard Clark' who has written a book 'Crete ; A notebook - journeys through a mystical landscape'. The fig tree below our room didn't bear fruit this year which was a pity, however there were plentiful grapes and pomegranites to make juice. Altogether it was a very pleasant stay and Maria made it for us yet again. The restaurant across the road was excellent as usual.
