“A nice family hotel with a good location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2012

Me and my wife,we stayed at the Lato hotel for 3 days, it is a really nice hotel near to the center of agios nikolaos. Hotel staff was friendly and the breakfast is basic. Lato is a family hotel clean with a nice pool. The room was small but clean. It is a nice hotel, with a good location, good value and I will go back again.

i read up on this on tripadvisor and it sounded ace, look lovely and sounded like just the ticket.in reality what we got was a very small room with single beds and hard matress, not like the room they show in the broucher.a bathroom where there was no extraction at all,not even a window,a shower so small you have to turn the water of to allow yourself to lather the soap.we also had a cockroach!!. when i arrived i had to carry our bags up the stairs myself. i checked in and i was told a safe is 11euros a week, fridge 2euros a day(very small and no use as when you leave the room the power is cut)air con is 35euros a day. so for 2 weeks you've lost about £80 already.had a front facing room and pay no attention of people saying it isn't noisy,it is.the only thing that helped was Raki of an evening.breakfast was rubbish, same thing every day and just not filling.the pool was OK size but got grubbier and shallower day by day.the desk staff would hardly look at you, always pretending to be looking at something.it is in a good location and it is cheap as chips, when departure came i got to the stairs and George looked at me with our luggage and ignored me while i struggled up(thanks) we told him we were checking out,not warm wishes or goodbye, just a thank you.he then watched as i struggled down the steps outside(again, thanks!!)would i go back...no.in summary.unfriendly(except Jeanette behind the bar)poor rooms and dire breakfast.only saving grace is nice area.

Room Tip: one in the towers on the front side

Stayed in Lato July 2012 for two weeks , found a certain member of staff on reception to be quite abrubt and unfriendly , booked double room with sea view ended up pushing single beds together and sea view blocked by trees , breakfast [--] , milk watered down so had to buy our own coffee and milk , fridge more like microwave & who on earth puts a lock on a fridge ? , would rather stay in the back of a car than the lato . I can only think that the people who stay here year after year have never experienced any other hotel in Ag Nik , we have been holidaying here for over 60 times in 20 years , this is by far the worst hotel , i would rate the Ormos above this.

Firstly, we are NOT returning guests putting glowing comments on here - indeed this was our first visit to Crete (but we will be back!)
Booked this hotel purely on Trip Advisor comments so we went along with high expectations - which if anything were exceeded!
The minus points reported from a couple of recent reviews truly surprise me as this small, friendly, efficiently run, spotlessly clean and totally relaxing hotel delivers on all counts as far as I am concerned. I have stayed in 2 star properties in Greece previously and believe me the Lato is 5 star compared to these! Although I booked through a package company the hotel were more than helpful with email correspondence I had with them prior to arrival (thank you Van) in arranging a taxi transfer and adjacent rooms. (These were across the corridor on top floor - one with the most stunning views across the bay and the other at the rear with a lovely sunny balcony in the evening). Road noise? Barely heard it - slept like a log and no evidence of it 'all night'. The rooms were well equipped, spotlessly clean and the bathroom was certainly anything but 2 star. We were in Room 208 and the views were simply stunning.
We tended to spend the day on the beach then back to the pool around 4.30pm for a couple of hours where we were able to read, relax, swim and although mildly aware of some traffic this did not impede our enjoyment at all (we went for the sunny spot right next to the road so would not have been able to do so if the traffic had been as bad as some people have said). Loved Ammoudi Beach (5 mins from hotel) - clean, well organised, reasonably priced beach bar for lunch/snacks. Also visited Almyros Beach (south of the town) 8 euros taxi ride from hotel. Much larger and also very clean beach with a mountain stream running into it - very picturesque. Lots of watersports.
We enjoyed our Happy Hour cocktails (and crisps!) - thanks Jeanette! and also a nightcap before bedtime from the ever smiling Yannis.
We travelled as a group of four with two teenage girls (18 and 16) who also loved the Lato from the moment we arrived at night and the taxi drove into the illuminated garden area. Yes, there are no specific facilities for children/teenagers, but the hotel does not state that there are so you know what you are getting before you arrive if you read the literature and these were things that made the hotel more appealing to us. Breakfast choices had some variety from day to day and certainly plenty of choice. The breakfast ladies were pleasant and efficient and it was a pleasure to eat outside on the pleasant patio area each morning.
We ate out locally on 5 of our 7 nights - twice at Knossos, twice at Kri Kri and once at Avra (all after reading recommendations on TA and all serving good food). We also had two meals in town at La Strada (would highly recommend for standard of food and the excellent staff) and at Blue Lagoon (would not recommend at all but the girls had set their heart on eating by the lake so we paid the price with over-inflated prices and inferior food - hey ho, that's life). When going into town we got a taxi from the hotel (5 euros) and from the hotel reception calling the taxi firm the car would arrive within two mins! Every taxi we used was of a very high standard of cleanliness.
Did the Spinalonga boat trip from Ag Nik harbour and all enjoyed it despite the almost ferocious heat on the island itself. Spinalonga definitely worth a visit and at 12 euros per person reasonably priced. (What pleased and surprised us was that refreshments on board were also reasonably priced - we had expected that on a boat we would have paid over-inflated prices)
On vacating our room on the final day I appeared at the top of the staircase from the 2nd floor with my suitcase and a member of the reception team leapt to his feet and almost ran up the stairs to carry my case into the lobby for me! We were given access to a very clean and spacious shower room to use prior to our flight home and a member of the reception staff came out and gave us a smile and friendly wave as we left. Pretty much perfect! Can see why people return.
In summary: first time in Crete but definitely not the last. Loved Crete, Loved Agios Nikolaus, Loved the Lato!

Room Tip: Sea facing high floor rooms have stunning views however rear facing rooms have sun in the evening.

Wonderful Hotel

We had an excellent time at the Lato, the room was serviced every day, the staff are a delight to speak to and always very helpful. In essence its friendly, quiet, clean. Poolside bar with drinks and snacks or a good bar meal if you want one. Short walk to a couple of beaches and lots of tavernas. The KRI KRI is just a short walk away and the food is very good. About 15 min coastal walk to centre of Aghios Nicholoas but plenty of facilities closer...

We chose this hotel mainly becasue of the excellent reviews on here, but quickly came to the conclusion that they had been written by the many returning guests, who were indeed treated as welcome guests.
Good points:
Room on top floor had a lovely view of the bay
Pool area was nice, and we never had a problem getting a sunbed and often had the whole pool to ourselves
Jeanette was friendly and makes lovely big bacon sandwiches for lunch
Breakfast staff were pleasant, and maids kept our rooms nice and clean, and it had a kettle and hairdryer.
Bathroom spotelss and good shower.
Yannis was very friendly
We enjoyed the 15-20 minute walk into AgNik, but the path is very uneven in places and often single file, and the road traffic is very busy for the first 10 minutes. Remember to budget in 5 euros each way for taxis if you aren't keen on the walk
Minus points:
I have never stayed in a hotel with such disinterested front desk staff, not once over 14 days did any of them manage a hello or good evening, they didn't even bother looking up when we collected our room key, had to get it ourselves from the back of the reception desk.
There are a lot of steps at the hotel (no lift), probably 10 steps to the front desk, and then steps to ground floor and upper floor rooms. No problem to us, but as the majority of guests were older this did cause some difficulties. One of the reception guys was having a fag on the top step near reception, and some new guests arrived, one of them walking with a stick and trying to manage his suitcase - the guy on reception watched him a bit, stubbed his fag out and rudely went back inside! It was left to another guest to help get the suitcases up the steps.
Pool bar during the day - they don't even look up when you are standing at the bar with your money in your hand you need to go into reception to find someone to serve you,- what do they think you want?
Although the pool is very nice, it is right on the mani road, and the constant traffic droning is hardly therapeutic, thank goodness for Ipods!
Air con costs an extra 5 euros a night, a fridge costs 2 euro (hardly works, water still warm) and the safety deposit box 20 euro for 2 weeks.
The view from our room was lovely, but ignore any comments that the road is quiet - it is the main AgNik-Elounda road, and is permanently busy with buses, cars, lorries, back firing quad bikes and motorbikes. Very noisy all night.
Breakfasts - poor choices - tinned fruit and 'bottom of the box' cereals, occasional fresh fruit, melon, nectarines etc. Bread and ham etc ok, but the same every day. The fresh orange was diluted squash from a big bottle. Worst of all was the flies that buzz round the breakfast food.
All in all I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, it has limited appeal to me because of the noisy road and unfriendly staff. No facilities for children either.
As you can see from the other reviews, there are lots of guests who have visited this hotel many times, and obviously enjoy its charms, but couldn't see it myself.

Room Tip: All rooms are up and/or down steps, no lift. High floor front rooms have a nice view of the bay, bu...

If you are 40 or under avoid this hotel! Its For the more elderly traveler. At breakfast you will feel like you are in an residential nursing home and to boot the breakfast is absoloutly awfull!!!! Ham and cheese EVERY SINGLE DAY with a very poor selection of cereal (as in two). The staff at breakfast are efficiant I have to say but in general the reception staff don't even look up and say "morning" when you come down the stairs, this is a very "clicky" hotel.
We stayed in "The Tower" room 211... It was awfull like a little square box approx 10ft square ish.
Avoid at all costs if you are young!!!!!!

Adrian & Julie!

Room Tip: Front faceing rooms have an beautifull view of the bay.

Please allow me to add some information about our hotel in order guests to have a more detailed image.
Ham and cheese is included indeed, every single day, in our breakfast along with 2 choices of cereal. But we do offer also, yogurt with honey, a wide selection of home made sweets and cakes, fresh fruits, boiled or scrambled eggs. In different days guests can also taste sausages, fresh or cooked tomatoes, "feta" cheese, olives e.t.c...Personally, i am not familiar with "nursing homes" but i do know very well that there are not many hotels of our category that offer a similar breakfast to ours...
Since our reception is most of the time very busy, especially during morning hours, days of arrivals e.t.c, there is always the possibility not to see someone...coming down the stairs or say "good morning" while our minds are trying to find a way to solve various problems. But we are always willing to answer to any question or to find every solution to our guests concerns - even if these are not exactly part of our duties...
I would like to add also, that the "tower room" offers the widest panoramic view of Mirabello gulf simply because it is situated in the highest level!! These rooms are ,most of the times, offered in a higher rate but we offered our "tower" to these guests without any additional cost, as we tried to fulfill their request for a sea view room, since our availability plan permitted so...
It is a comfort room, not very big indeed, but sufficient enough and certainly bigger in dimensions than what the Greek Tourist Ministry's law demands...There is a kettle with tea and coffee facilities fin the room, a mini fridge, air condition, satellite TV, hairdryer , free wi-fi internet e.t.c. All of these provide and ensure a good standard of accommodation.

We are truly sorry that we couldn't satisfy our guests needs. We honestly believe, along with many others, that we are a good, small family hotel making our best effort to keep everyone happy. And we promise to try harder...
