Myself and family have been visiting the mirabella yearly since 2002, great restaurants nearby, short distance to beautiful beaches, local bus ride to neighbouring resorts, brilliant weather and very friendly people. I can't recommend it enough the owners really take care of you.

We – my husband, two teenagers and myself – have just returned from a 12 day stay at the Mirabella and I can’t praise it highly enough. The apartments are spotlessly clean, the beds are extremely comfortable and the kitchen has all the basics you need. We stayed in two upstairs studios and the view from the balcony is truly breathtaking ~ glittering blue sea leads your eye across the bay to the mountains. The pool area which is set in the garden is a lovely, peaceful way to spend the day with the same delightful views across the bay. The family who run the apartments are so friendly as is Janet who runs the bar in the evening ~ it’s a lovely place to have a nightcap (or two!) and also great for breakfast, lunch or snacks in the day time.

Aghios Nikolaos (7 euros by taxi which reception will call for you) is a great place to spend a few hours wandering around the shops, lake and harbour. We ate at Twins in Ag Nik and the food was great ~ but be warned if you order a pizza they are HUGE! The best restaurant we found close to the apartments was Olga’s and we ate there every other evening as the food was so delicious and the ambience extremely welcoming – if you go there you must try Kleftiko (baked lamb which melts in your mouth), Stifado (a beef casserole dish which again melts in your mouth) and Chicken Souvlaki. I’d steer clear of the Grill which is on the left hand side, just down from the apartments though as it was the worst food we had during our stay. A meal for 4 with wine, water and soft drinks averaged around 50 euros wherever we ate.

We loved the beach near the apartments - a 5 minute walk - especially as it was never too crowded. We planned to do more sightseeing but just the pool, beach and lazy, long evening meals followed by drinks back at the bar was just perfect.

We met quite a few (lovely) people during our stay who go back to the Mirabella year after year and I can definitely see why. We will be returning but will be doing it under our own steam next time and not via Cosmos who fail to inform you that the air conditioning is not included – 50 euros a week extra is payable and if visiting in August, when the temperature was peaking at 40 degs C, then the air con is definitely needed! There was a lovely breeze during our stay which helped keep us cool and also kept the mosquitos away ~ we weren’t bothered by any during our stay. As has already been said by others make sure you stock up and take enough sun protection with you as it’s at least double the price there.

If you book a holiday there I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

I had been to the Mirabella twice before, but the last time was 10 years ago. Since then a new pool and bar/taverna has been built and the rooms have been fully redecorated and up-graded. All of which made a big difference. The views from the rooms (especially upstairs) are spectacular and you wake every morning to a gliterring coastline with swimmers and jetskis etc...breathtaking! The family who run the apartments are a lovely crowd, and I was delighted to see that Koula, the mother, was still there putting in 12 and 14 hour shifts, Amazingly she remembered me and I was greeted with a big kiss and a hug! We met very friendly family members Yannis, Adrianna, Mikhalis, and a host of grandchildren who were there on holiday themselves. And of course, there is Janet the English lady who works in the bar from 8pm till late every night, a real piece of English culture; friendly, helpful and a wealth of information about where to go and what to see and where to get the cheapest bargains, etc. Janet lives in Crete with her husband, so definitely worth listening to! I advise you go to elounda for a boat trip to Spinalonga the once leper colony. Hire a car and drive around crete to find the best beaches, the one at the apartments, a shingle beach, is a bit rocky and stoney and sore on the old feet when entering and exiting the water, but there are dozens of pure sand beaches all over the island. An anecdote: we boarded a ship for the trip to Spinalonga, the captain came out and told us all in broken English, "spread out, don't all sit on one side." When no one moved, he shouted, "Move!" I almost fell overboard hysterical with laughter. Don't think he meant to be rude, just limited English - I hope!
The one big difference this time from my previous two visits, was the cost. Very, very expensive now because of the weakness of the £ against the euro. For a start, the taxi from the airport to AG Nik was 65 euros - one way! That's 130 euros before you even get there! So be warned, organise a bus or couch etc before you arrive. Bring your own lotions etc because they're very expensive as well, as is drinks, eg, small bottle of Heinekin, about £3.50 at the apartments, £4 or £5 elsewhere. Eating out can all be costly, again, cheaper in the apartments, so always check prices in the Tavernas.
This said, I would still strongly recommend Crete and the Mirabella apartments for their friendliness(met alovely Welsh couple there, Robert and Jan) spectacular sea views, sea sports and the warmth of the people. But be warned, it can be very, very hot during the day...and don't even attempt to walk the 3k to Ag Nik, unless you want to die of heat stroke, and a cab is 7 euros each way for a 5 minute journey by cab. Get the bus right outside the apartments, they're luxurious with air conditioning! If eating out, I would recommend "Candia" taverna, about 100 metres down the street on the left on the road to Ag Nik. Ask for Poppy, she's the daughter who runs the place for her father, very friendly and smothers you with kindness and full plates - and I mean full plates! And as always, when in Greece, don't wait till you're hungry before going for a meal outside, the Greeks are notorious for cooking everything fresh and taking their time. Try the fish fillet, it's to die for in Candia. But, to get the best out of Crete, hire a car and see all of the island. It really is a beautiful island.
Have fun!

With my wife we chose Mirabella apartments for our early-June holidays.
We're very pleased as the rooms (though basic) were very clean. I have to stress the friendlines and the professionalism of the lady who runs the hotel, as she did everything to ensure a pleasant stay.
The food was delicious, always on time!
Agios Nikolaos five minutes away (by car), and the beach less than three minutes walking distance.
We're looking forward to visiting this place again in the near future...

We stayed here for a week in July 2008 and it was excellent. We had a ground floor apartment and the pool was pretty much right outside our door. The views over the sea were great but would be better from the first floor apartments. The bar beside the pool was great for grabbing a bite to eat for lunch or having a drink. There was also swings etc near the bar. There was a little beach about 2 minutes away which was great for lying on during the day. Walking into the centre of Aghios Nikolas took about 20minutes but there were lots of bars and cafes on the way and the views over the lake and the ocean were well worth it. There is also a bus stop across the road from the apartments to take ou into the centre and the buses were quite cheap. The room was very clean and quite spacious, had everything we needed.

Last minute budget trip to crete for a wedding, we could not fault the mirabella apartments for location, views, and service. We went very open minded after reading previous reviews but after arriving was greeted by one of the sons who couldn't do enough to welcome and settle us into the apartment. The view was outstanding from our balcony,
The appartment was basic but clean, the linen was changed 4 times in our 7 nights. The kitchen area was not designed to cook a 3 course dinner but was large enough to cook a breakfast or snacks. We did not use the pool as the weather was not great but it looked crystal clear as did the pool area in general.
The beach is about 5 minutes walk from the apartments as is the supermarket but beware they were expensive try using the major surmarket a few minutes walk further to your right down the hill to the main road.
Chania is located approx 10Km from the apartments but the bus runs regually from the bottom of the hill and is 1.50euro each and returns from the bus terminal in Chania every 20 mins up to around 11pm (but get a time table as this changes weekly) A taxi cab is around 10 euro's one way
The Harbour in Chania is worth a visit as is the many Taverna's in the side streets which come alive after 8pm.
Try hiring a car and travel west along the old national road and then south up into the mountains and gorges worth it for the views although not for the nervous passanger as the roads run high up into the mountains with very few saftey barriers and can become very narrow in places.
We had a great time and would return to the Mirabella anytime
