“A really interesting site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

I visited from Chania and did not have a car and did not want to pay the full taxi fare from Chania so I got a public bus to Souda and a taxi from there which worked well. I call the taxi company when I had finished and travelled the same way back. This was a really interesting site with no entrance fee and it has great views. It had a good variety of ruins - the water cisterns in particular are wonderful. There were spring flowers around and lots of birdsong.

“Great site to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

Well worth the short detour up the hill from the E75 and its free ( not open mondays ) . You are free to wander around the site , amazing water cisterns , and look at all of the ruins although the theatre is being excavated at the moment and is fenced off. If you feel like a walk park at the ruins of the entrance gate just beyond the last house of the village and follow the paved foot path between stone walls over the fields to the main site.

“Interesting excavations”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

Lovely to just wander round freely and explore. This is such a beautiful setting with amazing views in all directions. The theatre ruins are wonderful but unfortunately not accessible this year because of further excavations.

lovely setting for a stroll (ancient amphitheatre currently closed) charming, well worth driving over to fortress for magnificent view of the bay too. Loved the restaurant Ta Antepa in the illage really authentic greek cooking broad beans in wild fennel artichoke hearts in egg and lemon sauce.

“Ancient Aptera”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

Ancient Aptera is well worth a visit. It is about a 20 minute drive from Chania. In a taxi, this cost 25 euro (in May 2014). There is no entrance admission, and visitors are free to walk around the area as they wish. There are beautiful views and some excellent ruin. There are no gift shops or places to eat.
