I don't even know where to begin. Going to a new place and relying on my trip advisor friends I booked the Alcanea for our 25th anniversary. From the moment I made the reservation until our very sad departure everything was perfect. Aliki, Anastasia and Maria where the most genuinely kind and caring people I have had the fortune to meet. I have stayed in 5 star hotels across the world, and our treatment here far outreaches and of those. Anyone coming needs to know your stay at Alcanea is not going to be a "five star" luxury hotel, but pure luxury by other standards. By Chania standards this is the top of the line and it is fabulous. A stay at Alcanea allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture. Wonderful views, comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast that they took great care to prepare and serve you. No buffet but a made to order breakfast. Shame on those who complained about this. Aliki & Anastasia also provided us a bottle of Alcanea wine (made locally and not for sale) to celebrate our anniversary. These ladies made our visit very special and you can tell everyone who works at this hotel loves their job. You will find them all nearby on their off time and they always stop to speak. They are equally caring to the guests and each other. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate this...I don't even know where to begin. A few housekeeping items, the rooms are very comfortable, we stayed in two (extended our stay) #VII overlooks the old harbor and old town Chania. Great view, but for anyone who may be disturbed, the nights may go late and the mornings start early in Chania. I found the noise inviting! Room VI has a wonderful terrace and overlooks the old castle and the lighthouse. A bit more quite, but I missed the hustle and bustle of the town. No elevator, very old building and steps just for information, not complaining. The bathrooms are new and modern, they are superb by american standards much less european standards, wonderful showers and toiletries. The rooms have a small fridge for your own goodies. Beds are a tad hard, but I find that in most hotels in europe. The proprietors of Alcanea also are excellent sources for advice on how and when and where to visit outlying places. Chania makes a perfect home base to visit Western Crete. We only left to spend a few days in Loutro. The balcony shown in the picture is VII and the salmon walls are VI. VI is a bit larger, but who stays in their rooms on these trips. Lots of small quant...More
