Loved this hotel. The staff was super helpful and friendly, even when we were tardy getting in the first night. We got lost and they waited for us and made sure we found our way. Breakfast was the best we had in Greece. Wonderful selections. We got over excited about the selections and ordered way too much the first day. The rooms were beautifully decorated and clean. We had a wonderful view of the fort. Really loved the RAKI that they put in the room every night! Also told us we could drive our rental car to Balos lagoon beach. We are so glad we did as they advised. Best beach on Crete. Worth the bumpy ride and hike which was not too strenuous. We liked this beach better than Elafonisi. We recommend Tanam as a great Turkish restaurant in Chania.

Alcanea is a beautiful hotel situated at one end of the Old Venetian harbour in Chania. It is easily walkable from the bus station in 10 minutes. We stayed in Room 1 which was huge even with triple sharing. I enjoyed the balcony very much, taking in the view of the harbour and people going by while sipping the complimentary rakomelo! The room is nicely decorated and naturally lit in the day without being glaring or hot. The lights were too ‘romantic’ and dim at night though, which made it difficult to read, I had to direct the floor lamp to shine right at my bed. The modern clean bathroom was a joy to use, and we love the Apivita toiletries. Wifi access was great, and the iphone speaker dock was a nice touch.

The hotel seems proud of its breakfasts – with good reason! The breakfast here is excellent, I especially liked the bread, orange juice and fruit salad. It’s rather strange we have to place our breakfast orders via an order sheet, which was reused on subsequent mornings so the orders got a bit messed up. But the staff was nice and did not fuss when we wanted to change the order even after they had prepared the food. They were also kind to prepare takeaway breakfasts on the day we had to get up early to go to the Samaria Gorge. In fact all the staff we met here were excellent, friendly and helpful.

In summary we had a lovely stay here and would highly recommend the Alcanea. It can be a little pricey for Chania but worth it for the comfort and beauty, the little extras provided, and very good service!

Lovely rooms...we had two. Old Venetian building with lots of character set back on the busy port. Really good breakfasts with interesting meal choices. Raki drink in the room was really tasty and refilled daily. I would highly recommend this hotel. Staff people very friendly and helpful.

A very enjoyable stay in this lovely old house converted to a hotel. This has got to be the best location in Chania. Close to all you need - restaurants and shops, as well as ten minutes walk from the bus station. You can choose to sit just outside the hotel and eat breakfast whilst looking across the beautiful old harbour. Breakfast is very special. A good selection of meats, cheeses, eggs cooked to order, three Cretan specialities, breads and cake, cereal and fruit, wonderful local yogurt and honey, as well as decent tea and coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. Brought to your table - no waiting at a buffet table here! A great start to the day. All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. Mineral water was provided in the room as well as a local liquer. We had room five on the second floor. It was one of the cheaper rooms and small without a harbour view, but still perfectly adequate and very quiet with a modern shower room - good value. I would love to stay again.

We loved everything about this hotel. Everything was excellent- the service, friendly and helpful staff, beautiful rooms in a 400 year old building, great location on the bay, lovely views, a delicious traditional breakfast. It is one of my favorite hotels an first couldn't recommend it more highly.
Annette and Juergen

Room Tip: We had a room with a view of the lighthouse.

We recently got back from our honeymoon which encompassed three amazing hotels. Alcanea was the best of all. The hotel is situated perfectly in the beautiful venetian harbor, and our room (VII) offered perfect views from our private terrace. The room was small, but beautifully updated and furnished. The bathroom was modern and clean. The bedroom had HUGE vaulted ceilings and great decoration. The bed was superb. Every morning, we woke up to a delicious complimentary breakfast which we selected from a great little menu. The yogurt with honey, bougatsa, fresh fruit, greek coffee, fennell pie, etc. etc. etc. were all amazing. And at night, our little cafe turned into a popular wine bar with tasty house wines at reasonable prices. But, more than anything else, what made this hotel absolutely perfect were the gracious hosts that will welcome and you and take care of you throughout your stay with them. To Helen, Aliki, Niko, Anastasia, and the gentleman who served us breakfast each day (sorry we didn't exchange names!): We thank you. You were all so wonderful to us, and we were sad when we had to leave you. It is people like you that make a hotel like Alcanea as great as it is. Chania is a beautiful city and when we someday return to Greece, we will be staying at Alcanea once again!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room VII, which is on the top floor and overlooks the harbor with a nice little two-per...

This hotel has the best possible location for visiting the town of Chania. The friendly and helpful staff, and the copious breakfast with a great variety of dishes to chose from, add to making it an excellent choice.
1) Parking is difficult and at a relatively far area, although the desk clerk helped me in finding an empty spot. 2) The "double room for one" that I had chosen is quite small and has a very limited view of the sea and the lighthouse. If you want a fantastic view, throw in a few more euros and get a somewhat larger double room with a window toward the Venetian harbour.
