“Great layover”

We were stuck in Crete for a few days while our plane was being worked on at the airport. The reservations were made for my group of 18 or so and could not have been happier. The staff was great and the local was just as good. I would not hesitate on staying there on my next trip through Crete. Rooms were small but clean and comfortable, overall, nice place for the money. Definately beats the hotel we stayed at the first night way up on the hill. Forgot the name but it did have good food and great view but the beds were concrete and the location was out of the way.

One night in Chania was the theme for some autumn sun in early November.
It´s out of season time for Crete and therefore not that much bookable offers in Chania.
I´ve arrived late after a long day of flying around at 7 pm.
Taxi from the airport was a fixed rate = 18.-- Euros, no public transport options.
A friendly welcome from the front desk. The room was ready for me and the lady was so nice to offer me a harbour view room at the second of three levels.
Yes, the view was really magnificient to all that boats surrounded by the historic buildings from the venetian time at Crete.
It was dark when I´ve arrived and the view was even better in the morning.
The whole building was really oldfashioned, ok clean and well maintained, but shows all the secret signs about its age.
Also the room, small, shower only, twenty year´s old furniture,
but clean, some redecoration clearly visible.
Breakfast buffet style was included in the rate.
Everything there what I need in the morning, ok so far.
Also no problem at check out.

I stayed here with 27 other would-be Historians for three nights, we all enjoyed the experience.

Basic lobby, but with a wonderful view back out the door and through the windows. Two very small lifts or thin stairs take you up to your room. Mine was small, again basic. Small TV, small fridge, small desk, small balcony (with an angled sea/harbour view), two small beds and a shower room.

Everything was clean and tidy, maid service each day, just a bit cramped for two blokes who didn't really know each other very well!

Breakfast was mostly cake and fruit, some bread, cheese and meats were about, but not much. There was a bar and outside tables and chairs ( for breakfast if you wanted), but I didn't use them.

The location sold it for me, right on the harbour, but very quiet.

If the roof had a swimming pool and sun loungers, then this would be a fantastic place to stay at.

This was my 2nd stay at the Veneziano (1st was May 2008). I arranged accomodations for myself and 9 associates for a business trip. I was lucky enough to score a suite, worth the extra 30-40 Euro (being on per diem and all) for a substantially larger room as the basic rooms are very small at about 95 Euro (with breakfast). This was high tourist season though, I had the suite for 130 Euro in May and you CAN negotiate...a little bit.

Be sure you request a seaview room. I had two balconies, with table and chairs, that opened up directly to the old harbor. As you can see from the attached photo's, absolutely spectacular. Bathroom was decent size, but it was a shower/bath combo, with room for one person...crouched...to take a bath. Otherwise, there's a stocked minibar fridge (not over-priced as usual, a Mythos beer is 2.50 Euro, coke 1.50 Euro, same price as you'll find on the street) and plenty of desk and closet space. The staff is extraordinary, we were on a first name basis after a couple of days. George, the bartender at the attached bar, is great and it's a pleasant way to rendezvous with your group at the start and end of your evening for a drink or a coffee outside.

Some of the best fish taverna's in Chaina are directly left and right of the hotel and in about 5-10 minutes slow walking you're in the main part of the town. A stroll out along the breakwater takes you to a great restaurant, the Forteza (fortress), or you can walk 5 minutes and take a small ferry over for free (careful - this is CASH ONLY - about the only restaurant in Chania that didn't take credit cards).

Breakfast is very basic, breads, cheese, jam and cereal. The fresh squeezed orange juice machine was great though and the coffee is plentiful (if in small servings).

Easy to get to, there's one of the few large free parking lots in Chania almost directly next to the hotel (about 2-3 minute walk). One of the nearby Venetian galley sheds contains a great, small museum with a replica Minoan galley, worth the 2 Euro.

You're 20-30 minutes from the beach (drive straight out to the main drag, Venezianos Street, hand a right, keep going). Left takes you up the hills and towards the airport. (about 20 minutes away).

Irakilon is a 150 km away, took me about 2 hours to drive it. Careful at night, while the main coastal road is good, its totaly unlit and Cretan drivers are...well....get used to being passed and passing on the left...a lot.

Would definitely stay again.

  • Liked — Location, directly on the harbor front. Comfortable accomdations - FREE WiFI (3 Euro and that's it, unlimited use)!
  • Disliked — Breakfast...maybe a little more variety. Maybe a little more color in the rooms.

We stayed at the Porto Veneziano for 4 nights during our 3 week trip to Greece. This was stop number 4 out of 5.

It was our most basic hotel, most economical stay. It is a Best Western -- need I say more? The people who work here were great, and very good with recommendations. But, the accomodations were rather basic and utilitarian. Very functional, not luxury.

Definitely book a suite; ours was on the 2nd floor, corner room over-looking the harbor and walk. What a place to while away the time, reading.

The maids were not as good as other hotels; we didn't complain, but if this happens to you, say something. The room had a horrible smoke smell when we came in, and the phone, the bedside table, the carpet, all felt dirty to the touch. And, they often overlooked stray hairs and such in the bathroom when cleaning.

We grew to love this hotel and Chania. We liked that the hotel had the gorgeous view and was within walking distance of everything, without being right in the center of it all. Upon arriving in Chania, via a rental car, one-way streets and dusty urban construction, we were not sure what we were doing there. It had been recommended to us as a great destination. It may seem silly, but on our first night's foray, we missed the narrow shopping streets, staying along the port walk. There is an entire planet of shopping in the side streets, what a charming town.

Nice to have a more authentic Greek experience, apart from the touristy islands. One of the restaurant owners thought we were locals, which we took as high praise of our relaxation level!

Stayed here one night on a business trip. My first impression was on the phone - I contacted them to see if they could get me and my colleague in on a last minute booking. They were very helpful and were willing to arrange a late check in and check out for us. We paid 86 Euros for the night. This was an excellent price for the following reasons:

Breakfast is included in this price and the selection is humble, but well worth the wakeup – the view of the waterfront in the morning is stunning.
It is summer and tourist season in Chania, so to get a neat hotel that is on the water front and in the middle of the Old Town section of the city for that price is incredible.
The hotel has the standard small rooms for Greece, but is very clean and cozy – and of course the view of the Med is great.
The hotel staff is courteous, helpful and very accommodating to all of your needs.

The location is on the east side of the old city harbour. It is surrounded by many cafes (my personal favorite is Tamam’s) and tourist attractions/activities. A short walk into the old narrow alley ways to shop is a must. Night life is also a 2 min walk in any direction. Going west along the harbour has most of the clubs.
This is overall my first choice in hotel when passing through Chania.

Can't say enough about it. Fantastic location, directly on the Venetian Port in Chania. Walk 50 feet out the front door and you'll find yourself in the water. No more than a pleasant 5-7 minute walk along the port to restaurants, night clubs and shopping. Awesome sunsets in the evening.

Service was perfect. Anna at the front desk was wonderful. So were the other girls as well. George the bartender was the man to talk to about anything you want to know about Chania. He suggested several restaurants and was on target every time!! Turn down service was late afternoon and the maid was very concientious.

High speed wireless internet was in the lobby AND in the room. There is a computer in the bar area in case you don't have a computer of your own.

We had a suite which was huge. It overlooked the harbor and had a nice wrap around balcony. Air conditioning froze us out (just the way I like it) so no worries about sweating in your sleep. The bathroom was more than adequate with a tub instead of a square 3X3 tile area. As far as the bed goes, it was two beds pushed together. I see lots of people complaining about this on their reviews. Get used to it, this is very typical in Europe. I really didn't mind it any way.

Breakfast was ok, no omelettes or anything like that but a machine that squeezes oranges right in front of you, awesome fresh squeezed juice and an assortment of muffins, toast and cheeses.

I don't know what the other rooms had as far as amenities but for an extra 50-60 euros, is was worth it. If I had to make any negative comment it would have to be finding the place if you have a rent a car. Very difficult to navigate the streets and lots of one ways. But once you find it it, it is well worth it.

I loved this hotel! I find no fault in it at all. Great view, great location, great service. I would definitely stay here again!!
