In our opinion Smaragdi location is the best you can find in Chania: narrow, charming old street close to the old harbour. If you have the car park in Talo Square. Georgia is professional and helpful for everything. The room we had was on the backside, cosy and colorful. we had breakfast in the cafe in front of smaragdi, we sufìggest it

We have spent 3 nights there in April.

First all the good things:

the owners are super nice, we were in touch long before arrival, got good directions on how to get there and were welcomed nicely upon arrival at night. On the last day we were able to stay in the room until 5 p.m. so we could refresh after a whole day sightseeing before our evening flight.

The price is god, we have paid 30Euro per night per double with kitchenette and a bathroom.

The location is perfect. In the old town, walking distance everywhere, close (10min walk) to the beach and 3 min. walk to the Venetian Harbor. Lot’s of good restaurants nearby.

The cons: the plumbing system in the building is very noisy so you can hear the water flushing at all other rooms. The bathroom door in the room were harmonica-like and very thin which causes privacy issues. The room was quite dark, with back entrance to the back-ally, definitely not “a terrace outside to eat if you want out” as it was described via email.

Overall – a decent budget place, no-frills type. Great if you need a place to sleep in the central location and plan to spend most of time outside. If you are looking for a romantic getaway – you might want to look elsewhere.

Me and my partner are just back after spending an amazing week in Chania and are so glad we booked a studio room at Smaradgi as can now definitely say it was an excellent choice!
First of all, previously to our trip we had a few email exchange with Georgia, the owner, as our flight time had changed and also to ask her for other information. She always replied really promptly and clearly, so starting from the communication we were having no problems at all.
On our arrival (during a very hot 2nd week in July, up to 40 degrees!) we were greeted by the lovely Georgia with a map, a glass of iced wated and a fan to cool down. We were given all the information needed for our stay in Chania and felt immediately very well welcomed. Georgia then escorted us to our studio: a nice decent sized bedroom, with kitchenette and bathroom and (much needed) air conditioned system (well working, so we could sleep with no problem despite the hot weather outside). On top of that, we were also very pleased with how clean are the studios (cleaned every day!) and also had free wifi internet connection so we were able to plan our trips and stay in touch with our friends. As we did not have a car, the location of Smaragdi studios is ideal as it's only about 10 minutes walk to the bus station. Bus travel is Crete is very cheap and from Chania you will be able to visit many places such as Elafonissi, Balos, Falasarna, Stavros etc. Also, the trip to and from the airport by bus is only 2,30 euros (suggested by Georgia, rather than spending 25 euros by taxi). Moreover Chania old town is such a lovely place to stay: there's plenty of choice for tavernas to eat, shops, cafes, supermarkets.
Another thing to mention is during our stay we accidentaly managed to break the shower head. Needless to say this was promptly replaced and fixed and despite our offer to contribute the cost, we were told it was not our fault and to not worry about it at all. I think this was really nice of Georgia! And last but not least, on our departure we were also given a lovely souvenir gift (actually 2 gifts!)! We just felt so sorry to leave and will definitely recommend Smaragdi to all our friends and tripadvisor readers. We hope to be back to Chania again, and in that case our accomodation choice will surely be the same as this year.

The room was small but had everything you could need and the welcome was friendly and helpful. The en-suite room we had was on the second floor accessed by rather steep stairs so probably would not be suit anyone with a disability. A good central location for a short stay and we would use again.

Centrally placed in old, charming Chania, in a well restored and charming area with all you need just a minute away. Clean and neat, no reception, but very helpful Georgia on phone anytime. Well functioning air condition, fridge, kitchenette or coffemaker in each of the few rooms. Got a lot information from Georgia on mail before we left, she is indeed very helpful. 15 minutes walk to beach area with fine sand, possibility for renting sunbed and umbrella. Nice for swimming. Very good value for money, we go back! Rooms are simple, but contains all you need.

Room Tip: A stair up to the rooms. One room with a kitchenette and a backyard, one in front has a small balcon...

Georgia, the proprietor, is simply amazing. We were greeted with a map showing us what to do around Crete, and she answered each question as if we were the first guests she ever had. When we mentioned that we really liked the curtains in our room, she offered to go to the shop and pick them up for us, and did! We couldn't believe how kind she was.

The street that the Studios is on makes you feel like you're part of a community. All the shop owners are neighbors and good friends, and they work together to not cheat you but to make sure your experience is the best possible. The gift shop across the street, the food shop on the corner, the small cafes and restaurants...everyone tries so hard. Crete knows the value of the tourist dollar, Euro or kroner, and they work hard to make sure you want to come back.

We're relatively simply people and are more for the experience than absolute luxury, so the room suited us well. The air conditioning works perfectly. Turn down the fridge as it has a habit of making things exceptionally cold.

The best possible thing is to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by, and for a few minutes, be part of something truly wonderful. We absolutely loved it and we're very sad to go. It was one of the best vacations we ever had.
