Villa Verekinthos

The house is a fantastic plan for a large group of families. We were two families with 3 children total and we had a fantastic time. the house is full of small details, sparkling clean, comfortable. It has a rustic feeling, and yet has the comforts of a plasma TV, wi-fi and the best possible host. Nikos was there to help us in finding where to go, and he had a welcome package for us with fresh bread, spanakopitas, wine and fresh olive oil. The house has two separate areas, each with its own kitchen. it was perfect for 7 people and it is possible to accommodate up to 8 comfortably. The house is close to a fantastic little restaurant in the mountain, that has great Cretan food. The house is about 15 minutes from the center of Hania. it is very beautiful and the pool area is great. it also has a BBQ area and lots of open space for kids to play. I will certainly recommend it.

If I were to dream up a vacation home it would look something like Verekinthos Villa, set in a tiny village on a slope facing the glorious White Mountains of Crete. The beautifully and lovingly restored family property has a main house and two smaller lodges attached, each with a bedroom, private bathroom and one with a small kitchen.

The rooms are tastefully decorated, incorporating elements from the original structure and its previous inhabitants. The small television in our bedroom was suspended on a contraption made from an old plow and scale. The railing made of rope incorporated an old hammer, key and other objects that once belonged to Nikos' grandfather.

Nikos the gracious host and owner of the property devoted 6 years to rebuilding the house with his own hands. You can see the pride in the craftsmanship and unique character in each room.

Although we never met her, Nikos' mother prepared us a delicious traditional meal which was waiting for us one day when we returned to the villa after a long day at out. This kind of hospitality is the standard in Crete. People are unbelievably kind and generous.

The outdoor space at the villa is divided into levels, each with with own charm and comfort and all overlooking the mountains. The pool is a welcome escape from the scorching summer heat.

The house is about a 20 min scenic drive from Chania and a great base for exploring western Crete. We went to Balos, Falarna, Elafonisi beaches. We were a group of 6 friends and all of us were sad to say goodbye to this incredible place where we had shared a week of wonderful meals and stargazing (There is a telescope in the house!)
