“Nice place very good location”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

This is a very nice hotel located in ayia marina which is about 10 mins from chania city center. I loved the hotel which offers large rooms. Additionally there is a nice pool and the beach is amazing. The place is good for younger people as well as places like the villa mercedes club are next door. If you want quiet you can have that as well. Nearby are also other nice beaches to explore. I would definetely stay there again rather than the city center

I stayed here last week and had a very nice time, hotel is of a good standard clean/modern,it has a great location beach at the bottom of hotel a restaurants a plenty within 5mins walk(do a left a the petrol station on the main rd. go up the hill there are very good ones on the right) this resort is quite small and quiet but nice the geeks are a very nice people very friendly.the food at the beach bar was very good.the downsides are greek plumbing not good (no paper down the toilet) and the beds a little hard.Another must is to catch bus to chania the old harbour its about 20mins on the bus.

Room Tip: ask to be near to the pool as possible as main rd a little noisey

We have just returned from the Amalthia Hotel. When we arrived we were very pleased with the hotel, the room was nice, modern and clean and the hotel is right on the beach. The whole hotel is kept clean and well maintained, the beach bar/restaurant was very nice and the Greek night they held here with live music and dancing was good fun. My only criticisms of the rooms would be that the beds were very hard and uncomfortable and there was no hook to put the shower head on and only enough space to hang one towel.

There are plenty of places to eat out nearby, our favourite was Aletri Restaurant, just off the main road, turn up the road next to the fuel station and it is on the right hand side. Very pretty place, traditional Greek family restaurant.

I would have rated the holiday higher if it wasn't for what happened on our last day.

Two days before we were leaving we asked if we could keep our room on as our flight home wasn't till 10.30pm and we were told we would have to come back on the morning we were leaving. We did this and were told that the hotel was fully booked so therefore it would not be possible and we could not even have use of a room to shower in after spending the day at the beach. We were very surprised as the hotel didn't seem very full at all. We went back to our room to pack and decided to have a look on their website which showed availablity of all different types of rooms. We went back to reception and asked to speak to the manager and were shown into his office. We asked him if we could just have use of a room for half an hour to shower in later on in the day, he was very rude and arrogant and said the hotel is full. I told him their website showed availability and he suddenly decided that he had 1 suite available but we would have to pay 50 euros to use it, we told him this was too expensive just for a shower and he said 'take it or leave it', his other quote was 'I cannot let you have a room just so you can brush your hair'!! We left it and it spoilt the last day of our holiday. We found the manager to be very rude and ignorant throughout our week here as we walked past him everyday and not once did he so much as even smile never mind say hello and we did not see him speak to any of the guests, he just marched around the hotel inspecting everything with his hands on his hips. He may well run a nice hotel but his customer service is terrible and we have never stayed in a hotel where they will not make a room available for you to shower in.
For this reason we would not return! My service rating is for the other staff in the hotel and NOT the manager.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main road.

We stayed 14 days at the Amalthia with a baby. The location could not be better. The beach just in front of the hotel is fabulous! But the hotel itself has some work to do before it meets its own standards.

The first night we were a bit bothered by loud music from a nearby night club. A neighbor said it had been like that for days. Luckily it stopped. For the rest of our stay it was calm and peaceful. The room was good sized, modern and kept clean. Too clean maybe- because they splashed chlorine on the floors and stained some clothes... Nice and modern bathroom was a big plus.
The rock hard bed was a big minus. In our room there were separate beds that were pushed together. For us that was a drawback considering that our baby liked to lie between us during the night. So we had to put sheets and blankets in bed to cover the gap. We asked for a top mattress-they were all in use...so clearly they should have bought more.

Now to the baby cot story. When we checked in, we had to wait for a travel cot and when it came, it was without a proper mattress. The cleaning lady had put blankets in it instead in an effort to make it comfortable. She was very friendly and tried her best. My husband, who is Greek, had specifically asked about the baby cot/travel cot situation when he booked the room. He was ensured a bed for the baby would be available to us. So of course he had to complain. We got a nice bed in the end without anyone telling us. It just appeared in the room. Later during the stay they changed the travel cot into a worse one without telling us again !
It turned out they had borrowed a bed from another hotel that needed it back... My husband got really angry, but the receptionist acted like it was no problem. We thought it was weird not to tell us about the changes. And how difficult is it to buy enough travel cots for the hotel!?? The hotel handled the situation very badly, and we found some of the staff very arrogant. By arrogant staff I mean the receptionists.
The maintenance guy worked around the clock and still he was very friendly and helpful. For example: he changed his lawn mowing schedule so that our son could sleep next to the pool!!! I agree with other trip advisors..He is a credit to the hotel. The cleaning staff was super friendly and smiling all the time.
The breakfast staff was clearly overworked and acting a bit stiff because of ” the colonels” watchful eyes… (my impression) But always helpful and interested in our baby 
The hotel manager is another example of this arrogance. Not one day did he say Kalimera to me ( he nodded to my husband) or ask us if we had a good time. My husband was surprised by this very ungreek unfriendliness. We nicknamed him "the colonel". He walked around like he was inspecting an army camp!

The pool area was well kept and relaxing. It was a big plus for us that we had easy access to the pool and beach because of the baby.

The restaurant had good local food (best pie I have ever eaten! ) and some international dishes. Proper value for money with decent prices and decent portions. The restaurant staff was very friendly. They made our stay pleasant where the hotel staff failed.

The breakfast was ok. Not impressive. I would have liked more local flavors. It became rather dull after a few days.

We also requested a kettle in order to boil water for the baby formula etc. We got it after a few days and it was the most dangerous thing I have ever seen. Old and a regular fire hazard. Again- buy new ones! They are not that expensive. After all this hotel wants to be a resort!

Finally, when we checked out we got no wishes for a pleasant journey, and no questions about our stay. We had after all stayed for two weeks, and spent some money there. It was like they did not care.

In short: Perfect location and modern rooms. We had a very nice holiday despite the sometimes arrogant staff at the receptiondesk and the sour manager. The hotel needs some work before it really can call itself a resort.

About Agia Marina: Not the most exciting place to visit. But it is much calmer that Platanias. And it is only a short trip away from the magical Chania.

Everything was great in hotel Amalthia, the room, its location, the staff, the hotel reastaurant. The price (120€/night) could be lower considering the crisis and the fact that there were still available rooms at the hotel in the middle of August.

I stayed here this past August for two nights and enjoyed the stay. The location was great and the beach bar/restaurant was fantastic. The room was clean (and nothing fancy). The front desk staff in the morning was really helpful with directions, calling places, etc. However, the front desk staff in the evening was less helpful. It seemed as if the evening staff was more junior.

Overall, I'd recommend the hotel. The price is reasonable and the beach is gorgeous!

First of all the room was very nice, with a good garden view, we had almost every day a clean room whether it was on your request or not!The only problem with the room was the bed...because there are 2 separate beds making a big one and when you sleep in the middle of them...the beds separates them each other and you fall!!!
As for the hotel it is a really beautiful place to stay (we where there from 1-8-2012 till 8-8-2012) with a very good service, breakfast and lunch..
The beach was very clean!!!As for the pool...it is truly sad to be in this beautiful island with so many beautiful beaches and use the pool...it is a nice place to have a drink near to the pool!!!
So if you wanna go then go,it s great!!!
