“great food,nice place,kind service”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

It's my favourite tavern in Daliani. When somebody asks where they can eat well in Chania,i always suggest this place. I love the environment, the service is kind and quick but above all i like the well-cooked, absolutely delicious meat-food!The prices are reasonable but the only problem is that you may not find table,so make a call before visiting.

“Cheap good food no frills”
Reviewed 27 June 2013

At 9pm the restaurant was empty, but as it got toward 10pm it filled up rapidly and the waiter became too busy to serve all the tables speedily. The food is good but corners are cut a little I feel (as in the insufficient staff the day we visited), and also with the bread at the start no butter or olive oil. Water was served in its plastic bottle. Wine (watery house red) in a traditional-looking copper-style beaker. Food was wholesome and comforting. As always, complementary raki and dessert, with the usual generous mini-jug of raki. Dessert was a bit children's party-like and not really up to the quality of the rest, but considering the entire meal cost almost half the amount of the average restaurant meal in Crete, it wasn't anything to complain about. Dining on the street was both lively and relaxing, watching passers by and stray cats. In sum, comforting wholesome food at a bargain price. Don't expect 5 star treatment, and enjoy the ambience.

“Where Greeks Queue”
Reviewed 19 February 2013

Well, they don't really queue (Greeks don't anwyay) but they do try to get in and fail to. Mezze, or mezedhes as they are called in Greece, are not haute cuisine but they can be very good and at Anna's they are. Everything we had here (two nights running) was indeed very good but especially the sausages in a mustardy sauce, the pancetta (like thick grilled bacon) and the fried potatoes. Not for those trying to lose weight. Which reminds me - once you have put away more food than you usually do on a festive weeken they bring you an enormous desert on the house covered in ice cream, chocolate sauce and goodness knows what else. Bring a wheelbarrow and enjoy.

“Always full,even in winter.”
Reviewed 28 December 2012

Anna’s taverna in Daliani is an anomaly, because it’s full every night, even in winter
It’s really a meze or tapas bar and looks a bit old fashioned with lots of dark pine tables and chairs and old, sepia photo-prints in frames on the walls.
The sort of place you see all over the Mediterranean, usually with old men sitting outside drinking strong coffee, playing backgammon and smoking hand rolled cigarettes.
The welcome is enthusiastic and only this year have they provided an English translated menu.
Go there at 9 pm on a chilly, wet evening and the place is empty, but the waiter always asks how many there will be in your party.
A large piece of brown wrapping paper is laid on the table and the lone waiter explains the menu.
This is standard fare, but they have a few unique specialities like chicken and almonds or mixed country sausages and the local house wine is excellent.
By 10 pm every table is taken, and extra chairs are squeezed in to allow more to sit around and we count 32 people in total, split equally between men and women…this place is cosily small.
The way it works is that all dishes, much bigger than tapas, are ordered together and shared. But because food is fresh cooked, they come one at a time as there’re ready, and staggered over the evening.
Therefore there is always food on the table, even though it may take some time for the last dish to arrive. However as dishes are shared nobody is left hungry.
This slow pace also allows plenty of time to chat and the noise level is high.

Annas is laid back and has superb food, atmosphere, location, prices and the service is excellent, but if you’re an up tight person please give it a miss.

My version of Anna’s Chicken with Almonds recipe, with apologies to Anna.

Take a large chicken breast, cut sideways, splay open and flatten.
Mix beaten egg with your favourite herb, salt and pepper and dip or coat both sides of the chicken fillet with mixture.
Smother both sticky sides with flaked (not ground) almonds and fry in olive oil on a medium heat, turning over until the chicken is well cooked, but moist and the almonds are light toasted brown.
Cut into large pieces and share, with a simple salad.
