My wife and I stayed in the Balzis House some three years ago, not long after it had been refurbished and at that time thought that it was just about the best accommodation we had stayed in in Greece. Having just got back from a weeks stay I can honestly say that the accommodation is still imaculate. The two bed apartment we stayed in was clean, spacious and had a wonderful viwe from the balcony overlooking the mouth of Souda Bay. The pool is certainly big enough to cool off during the hot afternoons and again is imaculately clean.

Blazis House is situated no more than 200 metres from the resort centre of Almirida which essentailly comprises of a relatively quiet road which runs along the back of the beach. The road is lined with six or seven Tavernas and a couple of bars and other small shops. Almirida is a quirky little resort comprising of two or three realtivley large but by no means obtrusive Hotels and several excellent Tavernas. When we visited three years ago I got the impression that the ex pat population had quite an influence on the character of the resort, this time around I felt that this influence was not as prevalent and it felt a bit more like a Greek village, of sorts.

As well as the Blazis House being of an exceptional standard I also thought that all the Tavernas were really good, we didn't have a bad meal in any of them and at an average price of 35Euros for a two course meal for two with a litre of wine and tip, good value as well.

Overall a great place for a relaxing Greek holiday, just fantastic.

Blazis House is a small hotel, which is consisted of 6 apartments and it is located 200 meters from the beach. It is a nice new building and there also are a small pool (found always clean) with free sun beds and umbrellas, a b-b-q and a car parking. Our room was spacious and clean and it has a balcony, air-condition (with no extra cost – not always the case), sat-TV, fridge and a fully equipped kitchen. The owners live there, so they are taking care of the place and the visitors. As for the room price, it was a surprise for us...

Almyrida is a family-friendly village, 20km east of Chania, with a few taverns (I recommend the “Pizza-Pasta” and the “Aeraki” - avoid “Dimitris” and “Erotokritos”) and café/bars, some stores (minimarkets, a couple of bakery shops, a jewelry) and as much as a dozen (!) real-estate offices trying to sell “a place in the sun”, to Brits and Germans. Almyrida is said that it has permanent inhabitants from 35 different countries, which is a Guiness record for such a small village (about 100 people live there during winter months).

The beach is sandy with shallow, clean waters and it is ideal for children, but do avoid the central part of it, as there are underwater rocks. Renting a car is absolutely recommended to explore the beautiful Chania region and town – there are two rent-a-car offices in the village.

Our first visit to Crete this September (2006) having travelled to a fair few parts of Greece, islands & mainland over the years. The accommodation at the Blazis was very good we had a studio which had everything the two of us needed, with a good balcony that gave an excellent sea & mountain view. The pool was first class.
Unfortunately the area was very disappointing the seafront strip consisted of a couple of decent tavernas amongst the rest but there were to many ex pat style establishments which seemed to be run for the purpose of making you feel home from home, this includes a Gastly English style fish & chip shop. Estate agents seemed to outnumber tavernas, there seemed to be one every few yards, existing to persuade you to buy property or land & spend your time as we heard tying to convince yourself & anybody that will listen you have done the right thing & moved to somewhere pretending to be Greece.
Crete has some lovely scenery & history which we enjoyed but on this evidence we will not be returning.
