“Wonderful hotel, wonderful owners”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

I cannot emphasise enough what a fantastic experience I had staying at the Hotel Akrotiri. The hotel is set high up on a hillside overlooking the sea and Chania below, with incredible picture-postcard views. The rooms are clean, light and spacious. But what makes the experience of staying at this hotel that extra bit special, is the warmth, hospitality and kindness of Ilia & Lena, the hotel owners. They go out of their way to welcome you, to help in any way they can, to make you feel at home. it was my befriending of this lovely couple that will be indelibly etched in my memories of a great trip.

I stayed for the second time at Hotel Akrotiri. Once again, the owner greeted me with a warm welcome! I was in a single bed room, since I was by myself, which was very clean and meticulously prepared for my arrival. The owners and staff are very discreet and very kind, eager to help out with anything you might need.
Although this time I stayed for two nights, the room was cleaned, despite it not being necessary, which surprised me pleasantly.
The breakfast is delicious and everything is of great quality. But the best thing about the breakfast is not the food, but the gorgeous view of Chania city while you are sipping your coffee and enjoying a slice of cake. Not to mention the quietness...
All and all, a great experience, excellent value for money and will definitely keep staying here when visiting Chania!

Room Tip: All rooms are great, but the front ones facing Chania have that majestic view.

We had heard so much about this hotel and its proprietors. It was all true! The hospitality was amazing. The room was very nice. The constant availability of coffee and tea was wonderful. The view of the bay was incredible. "We came as guests, we left as family". Thank you very much Lena and Ilia. See you again, Katy and Peter

You cannot find a better value in Chania! At only 40 euros per night for a single, it proved the perfect base for exploring Western Crete with a rental car, as there is ample street parking in front. The three single rooms all face the beautiful garden in the back of the hotel, but the owners were kind enough to give me a suite with a double-bed and a partial view of the bay; it all depends on availability. My room was spotless and was made up every day; it had a balcony, hair-dryer, working AC, cable TV (there is always some cheesy movie playing in English with Greek subtitles, plus BBC News is in the breakfast area), and large fridge (there is a supermarket nearby, but no cooking facilities), and they even lay out a half-bottle of local red wine on arrival. Note that it is almost 3 km out of town, up a steep hill. On the other hand, you are away from the noise of a very noisy town, in a quiet and safe residential area, and the aerial view of Chania from the breakfast area is breathtaking. The breakfast, which starts at 8 am each day, was fresh, assorted, and delicious.
The owners are great; ask them any question, they are happy to help. If you have a car, ask them for directions to the free parking area adjacent to the old town (you will always find plenty of spaces before 8 pm, but it can get crowded later on). They can also hook you up with a bus to the Samaria Gorge leaving at 6 am right in front of the hotel. When I asked the location of the nearest laundromat, they offered to wash my small load themselves at no extra charge. They really care about their guests.
The only cons I can think of:
-wifi signal was too weak to reach my room (#17), though it is usually strong in the reception area, which is spacious and comfortable if you do not mind going online outside your room.
-some may find the bathroom a little small by American standards, with a hand-held shower that has no shower curtain, so the floor will always be soaked for a while. On the other hand, there is plenty of hot water with decent water pressure.
-it is difficult to find by car; ask directions from owners! From the west (Chania), get ready for the left-hand turn into Profiti Ilias as soon as you see a big blue-and-orange "Gym & Spa" sign. From the east (Airport), it is most convenient to go down Tsouronaki, but if you miss the unmarked turn-off, get ready for a sharp 320-degree right-hand turn into Prophiti Ilias as soon as you see the small yellow triangular LIDL sign.
Having said that, this is the kind of hotel and owners that will make you fall in love with Crete! I do not think I have ever found in the Western world a better value for 40 euros..

We stayed at the Akrotiri Hotel in Chania for three nights. The owner Lena was amazing. So kind and helpful. Breakfast was very good with fresh produce. Room was very clean. Nice view of the sea on the terrace. Highly recommended! Great value for the price.

I so much enjoyed my stay at this hotel that I will definitely be back!
Lena and Ilia made us feel very much at home and welcome. When our rental car turned out to have a puncture on Easter Monday (try to find a mechanic in Greece on that day!), they helped us change the tire and then went through all the motions of going to a garage with us to have the tire fixed.
I stayed in a double room for 4 days with a friend and then moved to a single one. Both rooms were very clean, and had a huge balcony either overviewing the garden or the sea.
All amenities were there and the fridge in the room was a big bonus should you want to eat a snack in your room instead of going out.

I can't but praise this hotel. This is excellent value for money and if you have a rental car (which is recommendable unless you've got great condition to climb the 2 km hill from the city-mind you, the bus stops in front of the hotel)
The owners are always available for help and great tips on what to do and where to eat.

I can't but confirm the reviews from Ulysses F and David E

The Hotel Akrotiri is excellent. Lena and her husband are amazing, very helpfull and friendly. They have helped us to book the transfer to the Samaria Gorge and after the trip, when we arrived, as we are very tired to go dinner, they order an excellent Kebab for us.
The hotel is not luxurious, in fact, the rooms are very simple, but there are some amenties like robes and flip flops. The view of Chania is memorable, mainly in the sunset. It is the kind of hotel that makes you feel like a part of the city.
Important, the hotel is a little bit far from the Chania's downtown. As we have rented a car, I don't know how easy is to reach the city by bus or taxi, so it is something to be informed about.
