“Wonderful hotel: good location, excellent service, incredible breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2013

We stayed here for a few days at end May/early June 2013. Other reviewers have said it all already, so whatever I write is going to be mostly repetition.

First of all the location. The hotel is very conveniently situated for everything. First impression, arriving on foot from the pedestrianised part of the old town, was perhaps a little disappointing: the street looks a little run-down and has some traffic, though not too much. But fear not! Less than half a minute's walk and you're in the heart of the old town; or in the beautiful and peaceful square with its strange Ayios Nikolaos church equipped with both Orthodox belfry and a minaret; or in two minutes you're down at the port.

The design of the hotel is lovely, with its inner courtyard where breakfast is served (more about breakfast later!) and where you can just sit in peace at other times of the day. Our room was very nice, we had a small veranda facing onto the courtyard, with steps leading down to it. And of course everything spotlessly clean.

Service: well it doesn't really feel like "service"at all, you feel you're an honoured guest of the family. Very very friendly.

And the breakfast. I don't remember seeing any other hotel on TripAdvisor where ALL the reviews mention the breakfast! It just keeps coming, is delicious, and kept us going comfortably until the evening. After the first two days we learned to say "no" to a few of the things on offer to avoid that slightly-too-full feeling.

So, on our next trip to Chania, whenever that might be, we'll certainly be staying at the Splanzia.

We stayed here for several days in October 2012 at the start of our honeymoon. The breakfast is worth the stay alone, and the location couldn't be better....close to the touristy areas, lots of good dining options, and easy access to the rest of the city. There is a car rental place right across the street which made it easy to rent a car for the day to venture to Elafonisi--just a 1.5 hour drive through beautiful countryside. The family that runs the hotel was very hospitable...we will definitely be back!

I cannot say enough good things about Hotel Splanzia. The hospitality was really warm and wonderful -- delicious breakfast, excellent recommendations for exploring the region and dining in the area, helped us with our bags, walked with us to find a parking spot... and the list goes on! We checked in late on Sunday evening (after 10pm) and there was no problem getting a to-go breakfast for the next day to take with us to the Samaria Gorge. They were helpful, friendly, and made us feel very welcome in Crete and Chania in particular. The room was clean, comfortable, and the patio (for breakfast) was beautiful and shaded. My only - very minor - complaint was the very brittle bath towels. Otherwise, it was a perfect experience.

The three of us (three women) stayed here for three nights and loved it! Splanzia is located very conveniently close to the Venetian harbor and the old town (5 minute walk) but away from the tourist crowds and overwhelming souvenir stands. The neighborhood is young and hip, with many excellent dining options just a block away. Try Kouzina across the street or the coffee shops and bars in the church square a block away.

The hotel is very clean, the rooms are spacious. The three of us stayed in room 13 on the first floor (which is technically the second). The room was spotless, fresh fruit and a complimentary bottle of wine were waiting for us. Besides, our fruit was supplemented daily! Room 13 has a staircase that leads to the gorgeous and shady (meaning also cool in the afternoon) patio.

Breakfast was phenomenal -- served in the patio among billowing bougainvilleas. The two brothers who run the place, Nikos and Iannis couldn't have been more accommodating. Try all the fresh pastries and savory pies that they bring you before you even order breakfast. The coffee is good and we couldn't get enough of the freshly squeezed orange juice. I also recommend the crepes with bananas and nutella and the scrambled eggs with bacon. Try the yogurt too!

Our stay was very comfortable and we were so glad to have chosen Splanzia.

Room Tip: 1) Room 13 led directly onto a staircase into the patio/courtyard. There is another room on the same...

This gorgeous hotel was the best choice we could have made! This place was absolutely wonderful… we had a triple room on the top floor and the room was beautifully presented with loads of space and easy access to the rooftop balcony.

The breakfast in the beautiful courtyard was fantastic and so generous, made to order every morning, and Yiannis and Nikos (I hope I got that right!) were excellent hosts throughout the stay, from giving us guidance on the weather and the best beaches to visit, to recommending a local jazz bar and a top 10 list of traditional restaurants. Not to mention carrying our suitcases up and down those stairs and moving the bikes so we could park right out the front on our last morning!

And the bottle of wine on arrival and fresh fruit each day was a lovely touch too.

Would love to think that I could make it back one day….

Room Tip: top floor is lovely and private with easy access to the roof balcony

I loved this hotel - I could sit in the courtyard all day - it was lovely. We had a great room with doors opening on to stairs leading down to the courtyard. It was large and cool without ac in late May. The bathroom let the room down as the poor design placed the loo in front of the shower opening but hey ho we managed.
The hotel is in the old town and perfectly located for exploring and taking advantage of the fabulous restaurants nearby.
The owners were perfect hosts and as mentioned here previously the breakfast was a feast which kept on coming.
I very much hope to return one day.

I stayed at this hotel from 7-10 June 2013. The hotel was recommended by friends that stayed the previous year. This was my 7th visit to Chania but the first time i stayed in the town center. The hotel is in a prime location, i.e. quiet but walking distance from all bars, restaurants, cafes etc in the town center. After staying by the beach in previous visits I believe the town center is a better option for summer vacation in Chania. By staying at Splanzia you can enjoy everything on foot. You will only need to commute to go to the beach. Otherwise everything else is just a breath away.
The hotel is a family run business. It is an extremely good value for money, definitely worth every penny paid. Nicos and Giannis who run the hotel are very helpful, a true sample of cretan hospitality and will make your stay very pleasant.
The hotel is situated in a historical building and has kept most of the buildings main features. It is very traditional and very kindly decorated in accordance to the style of the building. The courtyard where the breakfast is served is very peaceful and charming. On the second floor there is also a shared balcony for all rooms which is also nice to sit in the afternoon to read a book and relax.
The breakfast is WOW and definitely worth putting on a few kilos! I could not wait to wake up in the morning to have breakfast.
The only disadvantage of the hotel is that someone might possibly find the bathroom a bit small. This was not a problem to me though. The rooms though are very spacious.
This hotel would definitely be my choice for future stays in Chania.

I wish many success to Giannis and Nikos. Thank you for making our stay worth while. :)
