This was our second year at the Domes and the experience was just as fantastic as the first. The location, views, and overall look of the hotel are second to none in our opinion. The quality and variety of food on offer is exceptional and caters for all tastes. But what makes this a 5 star experience are the people who work there. The staff at every level are second to none in their friendliness, helpfulness and attentiveness and the way they treated us and our 5 year old daughter was once again the most amazing part of our holiday. We built up some truly special relationships with the staff and regard many of them as close friends.
Any minor problem is sorted out promptly and with the minimum of fuss. Beach is perfect for children with shade right to the waters edge. I am not bothered if other reviewers try to decide whether the hotels deserves to be 5 star or 4 star. In our opinion the Domes deserves 10 stars.

The only negative part of our holiday was having to leave. Will we go back.? Definitely and it cant come soon enough.

Just back from a 10 night stay with wife and eight year old daughter.

Overall we had a great time and would probably consider returning in the future. However, not convinced this is actually a 5* experience- which is what they are marketing themselves as.

We stayed in one of the new villas with private pool which was top drawer. But even here there were gaps: hair dryer had to be asked for 3 times; the door handle had to be replaced; DVD player had to be requested; no price list for mini bar items; asking for coffee to be replenished, no milk for tea/coffee so on.

These in themselves are not major issues but, it's exactly these kind of things that make the difference from a 4 to a 5*.

Staff very helpful but either very inexperienced or in some cases plainly inept. For example, if you ask me at breakfast whether I want tea or coffee, I at least expect not to have to ask for it 10 minutes later when it has not arrived. Another example, if a sun lounger does not have a mattress and it gets mentioned to the pool staff, at least pretend to try and help and not walk around aimlessly for 20 minutes and letting me pinch some from round the corner.

Food. Breakfast very good at villa area (not at main restaurant so can't comment on that), lunch I thought was very expensive for a basic salads and €4 for a litre bottle of still and €4.50 for an apple juice loaded with ice, is plainly the wrong price. Dinner mostly fine and again staff very attentive, different themed nights daily (Asian/Greek/French etc) mostly work but, in reality only one restaurant to choose from for 'normal' meals.

You must visit Plaka which is a small village a ten minute walk up the road or €7 for a 3 minute cab ride (London cabs are cheaper-again, the wrong price). Can recommend Osteria at the end of the main road - lovely meal with an authentic Greek feel to it. Plaka also has a mini mart which stocks all the usual stuff and amazingly, water that is not €4!!

Staff. As above. Very nice, very helpful but, in some cases, very young/inexperienced. The appointed 'guest relations' left me wondering what exactly she did- not once did she ask if we needed anything/how it was going etc.

As mentioned, we stayed in the new part of the resort where the villas are and the new pool are, so walking uphill etc not really an issue as buggies were the order of the day. I can imagine that In some parts the noise of buggies going up n down all day/night might be an issue.

What they bill as a 'Mini Mart' is actually a beach/pool shop. Water/soft drinks/newspapers etc nowhere to be seen. Just inflatables/sun cream and flip flops.

I think there should be a shuttle service put on by the hotel to Plaka at a bare minimum but also to Elounda (there is a mini bus service from the new pool to reception which erm, was empty any time I saw it- surely they could better employ this for the shuttle).

The beach was not the best in the world, narrow, felt cramped and was more Benidorm than Greek 5*.

If you do stay, make the effort to go to Spinalonga. Well worth it.

In summary, we actually had a thoroughly enjoyable stay but, if they are trying to make themselves a truly 5* experience (rather than just charging like it) they have a few things to improve and focus on. In fact, they could do worse than take a close look at Sani in Halkidiki. They have it nailed.

I'm sure that in a year or two these things (I hope) will be ironed out. Otherwise...

Room Tip: Villa if you can afford, otherwise looks like higher up hill a better option to avoid noise...

Just back from a week long trip to the Domes with my husband and children, aged 4 and 10 months, we had a good holiday but do not feel it is a 5 star hotel.

We called the hotel in advance to reserve several key items for our youngest (steriliser, baby bath, cot, monitors) and they put us in room 303 which is a mighty 27 steps to get too. Not at all convenient when you have a pushchair. The monitor and steriliser both didn't work and we called reception to tell them and ask for replacements which they never sent. We had to go down and ask again in the morning; things like this I don't expect from a five star resort.

I'd strongly recommend organising airport transfers privately as we got the return trip for €100 less than the hotel was asking for.

The resort is nice but rooms are very close together and often the outside space looks upon the walkways so lacks privacy. Not necessarily an issue for room 303 but definitely others.

The food was average and often lacked seasoning but had a wide selection in the main buffet restaurant. That being said, three days running the boiled eggs were not boiled. Soft drinks seemed expensive with fizzy drinks almost the same price as a beer at €4.50. The service from the staff in the main restaurant was great though; very friendly and extremely good with the kids.

The beach, although not golden sand, is nice and the setting is beautiful but the hotel beach seems to be open to the locals which I personally didn't like.

It's consistency, the little things and standards which let this resort down. It is a lovely setting but could be better. We had a lovely holiday though and the kids loved it but I don't feel it is a five star resort, four star is probably more accurate.

Room Tip: Steep slopes, often lots of steps so not suitable for all travellers

We stayed at Domes of Elounda July 6 for three nights and enjoyed it very much. Beautiful hotel,
great breakfast. In all the reviews nobody mentioned that the hotel is situated on a slope and if you don't want to walk it up which is quite steep, they have a cart that will take you to your room and bring you down from your room. The suite we had was very specious with a living room and the bedroom was also roomy and beautifully decorated. The bathroom would have been perfect if the shower was not in the rounded jacuzzi which was difficult to get into and out.

We stayed at the Domes (villa 6) mid June for 10 days with our boys aged 4 and 2 and had an absolutely wonderful holiday. The staff are so accommodating and fantastic with the children and found from the moment we arrived our holiday started and we truly relaxed. The accommodation was great, our Villa and pool were cleaned to a high standard everyday. We stayed on a half board basis and the selection, variety and quality of food was incredible, if you're looking for something even more special the restaurant at the beach is excellent. A special mention must go to the buggy drivers Cristian, George and Yannis who who made our boys holiday and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. We hope to return again soon!

We stayed for a week mostly for my wife to visit Spinalonga of the Victoria Hislop book 'The Island' fame. Well the hotel could not be better placed as the island is about a mile away across a beautifully blue sea. In fact the views all round are just amazing. The staff are all unbelievably friendly and welcoming. They really make you feel welcome and that is important to them that you have a great holiday. The park is secure and extensive but very hilly. People with problems walking should make that clear on booking. There are Ez-go buggies to run around with and their drivers are delightful and very knowledgeable. Yanni in particular comes to mind with his great attitude and his encyclopaedic knowledge of his Island and it's history. He should give talks to the guests.
We were on half board. Breakfast is as good as anywhere in the world with Champagne, eggs of any sort, bacon, potatoes and local specialities galore. The buffet dinner is very good and you will not leave the table hungry. The choices are very many and for all tastes. The desserts are over powering in their varieties and quantity.Kids very welcome.
We treated ourselves to one of their special gourmet dinners and it was fantastic and a high light of the holiday.
Their wine selection is extensive.
The pools are very clean and the beach is beautiful and liberally covered with olive trees and carob trees to hide from the sun when needed. There is a great beach bar and separate snack bar, both welcoming and the whole beach area is staffed by really great people. The sea is very clean and clear but there can be winds which cool the effect of the sun,be warned!

On either side there are two villages, Plaka which is walkable (visit the Carob tree restaurant for a great local experience) Elounda is to the right and bigger with reasonable shopping. The best shopping is to be found at Aghios Nickolias which is a 20 minute drive/taxi away, but is much more commercial.
We will return to the hotel and Crete, mostly for the warmth of the people.we had a really great experience.
