“fab food and atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

Have visited megaro in 2013 and returned this year. Great food, we treated ourselves to lobster. We had marinated anchovies to start and humus both excellent. The setting and the ambience and the efficency of the staff is amazing, We were recognized as repeat customers and given a bit of special treatment. Recommended and will definetly return.

“fresh fish but non-transparent prices”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

The choice is big but everyting you order comes with french fries and tsatsiki. Prices seem very reasonable, especially for starters and meat dishes. If you order fish, you do not know how much i t will cost. There is a per KG price. You choice the kind of fish and they show you different fishes.

We had a meat dish, which was quite OK.
The fish was very fresh, but was cooked a bit too long for my own opinion. The bad surprise came with the bill, Even it was a quite small fish, the price was higher at one of the other restaurants we had fish. You do not know how they weight it. It did not feel that I had a half kilogram fish, but that was the charged price.

Service is great with typical greek hospitality.

“Fabulous fish and food!”

This was the best and freshest swordfish we have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection having been caught that morning! Apostales (the boss) is fun and charming! It is also the oldest restaurant in town!

“The welcome, the food, a perfect place to eat!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

When we arrived in the port in June 2007 for our first evening in Elounda we were greeted outside Megaro, the first in the street of restaurants actually on the water, by the man whose name we now know is Apostolios and took very little persuading to stay and eat. We could not know then that we would become such firm friends with them all – the owners Dimitris and Nikki and the rest of their lovely staff. This friendship is echoed in so many of the reviews on this site and yet it is never for a minute less than totally genuine and equally personal to each of us. Last year Dimitris saw us walking towards him on our first night, unannounced, and called out ‘I was only thinking about you last week and wondering if you would be coming soon’!
We always choose the simple things on their menu: it has already been noted that Dimitris’ father is a local fisherman and brings his catch fresh to the restaurant every day to be displayed in the chill cabinet. We particularly recommend bream with lemon sauce! Meat, particularly lamb, often marinaded in wine and locally-grown herbs; large succulent prawns and other seafood; home-made dips of taramasalata, tzatziki and fava, all served with deep-fried pitta; various cheeses baked or fried; superb fresh local tomatoes.
We shall be returning in June for another wonderful week in Elounda and know we shall be given the usual very special welcome. We can hardly wait!

“excellent Cretan hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2014

Just returned from pre-season week in Elounda, Crete. Beautifully quiet. Only a few restaurants open - thankfully discovered Megaro and ate their several times during the week. Fresh fish sold by weight and cooked to your specification. Wonderful warm welcome and superb Cretan hospitality meant that we were lavished with much more food/drink than we paid for. Celebrated my birthday (our 3rd meal) and was made a fuss of. Highly recommended. Delicious food and made to feel very welcome, as were all the other diners. No wonder it's very popular.
