“Worth it for the views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

Fabulous location and great views. Rooms were spotless and generous in size but our mountain view room was in need of an update. Most of the staff were very attentive. The buffet breakfast was excellent and there was a reasonable choice in the evenings.

Thank you for your review of the holiday you had with us at the Elounda Bay Palace. Together with our sister hotel, the Elounda Beach, we command over 1000m of waterfront and acres of mature Mediterranean gardens providing a colourful and scented backdrop to our hotels. Your kind words about our staff have been passed on to them as they appreciate that their efforts have gone towards enhancing your holiday experience. We take all the suggestions of our guests into consideration when we reassess the hotel during the winter and make the changes and renovations necessary for the coming season. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to the Elounda Bay Palace for a future stay.

My friend and I stayed here for eleven days at the beginning of June. It was our first trip to Crete and a truly wonderful experience. Everything about the hotel was excellent, the room, the food and the helpful friendly staff. I would recommend this location to anyone who wants a fabulous experience.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

This was the first hotel we stayed in during a two week, two hotel visit, to an island we love. It was far and away the better of the two. Amongst other factors, the bedroom, plus bathroom, would have fitted within the bathroom of the accommodation we had here.
Firstly the “Pro’s” to this hotel.
It is in a delightful situation, as part of a multi-hotel complex, with a series of low rise buildings set around two bays, looking across to the island of Spinalonga. The overall appearance is superb.
The entrance is wonderful, with very attractive and well laid out grounds leading through to a broad, paved, terrace leading to the Main Entrance and Reception, although this was to cause us headaches.
The only odd thing is that the approach is via a path passing under one of the buildings, through what has the appearance of a small underground car park. Puzzling, but not off-putting!
The main building also houses the ‘Aretoussa’ Restaurant - buffet only - and the Erato Bar. There are many staff in both these areas who are excellent in their abilities and in their interaction with guests, especially Georgia, the young lady usually staffing the Erato bar and a young lady in the resaurant who asked to be called ‘Popi’ because, she assured my wife, ‘you wouldn’t be able to pronounce my actual name’. These are the only two whose names we caught but the vast majority are very welcoming, helpful and caring.
There are several other bars and restaurants scattered around the complex, most also having great staff. Anna in the "Sail In" bar was especially helpful and welcoming.
The area of the complex in which this hotel stands is very nicely laid out with buildings almost surrounding grassed areas broken up by plantings of a variety of trees and shrubs so that in total it gives the impression of a much smaller hotel rather than stark blocks of buildings with large barren open areas!
In this area there are at least three places to obtain refreshment during the day, each with their own attractive design and construction, with another one that opens at night as a restaurant. They are either adjacent to the pool or overlooking the sea.
The room we were assigned, although not spacious, was perfectly adequate for two, with patio doors opening out into a small ‘garden’ area. The bathroom was quite large, with two sinks, a bath and a double size shower, with a separate WC.
However, we got talking to a Dutch couple who were in a similar room, a few doors away, who described their room as ‘small’. Originally they had been in another room where, they said, it was so small that the double bed was pushed against a wall, making it difficult if the ‘inside’ person needed to get up in the night. Cannot vouch for that since we didn’t see it. However, their move to the room near us was apparently described as an ‘upgrade’.

Con’s
The enjoyment of Guests in rooms 37 to 42 is frequently disturbed by a planning oversight.
As you approach the Main Entrance to Reception you cross a large paved plaza.
Ever listened to footsteps across a paved area?
Well, now consider that this very paved area is also the ROOF to the aforementioned rooms!
Try it. Get someone who makes loud footsteps (heeled shoes?) to walk across the area whilst you try to sleep in the rooms below. I likened it to an elephant walking across the ceiling!

A hotel that professes to be of 'luxury' standard most certainly should not tolerate guests being disturbed at 9, 10, 11pm by loud 'conversations' among other guests, in the grounds, between accommodation blocks, and most definitely not by shouting, screaming, fractious children at that time of night! I’ll not mention the nationalities but, unusually, they were not Brits!
I'm sorry but no matter how beautiful the setting, no matter how well laid out, no matter how superb the staff - and they do have some superb staff who they would be very unwise to risk losing - if you let holiday experiences of the majority be destroyed by the ill manners of a small minority then you do not deserve a high rating.
The only sign I saw of an attempt to maintain standards was when the Maitre'd in Aretoussa, enforced the "no shorts" rule one evening. Excellent!!
Suggestions
1) It might be worth mentioning to 'beach staff' that conversations are best carried out whilst fairly close together and not by shouting back and forth from, for instance, either side of a swimming pool, unless it is a DIRE emergency!!
Nor should they use vulgar whistles to attract attention!
2) WHY, in the Aretoussa restaurant, is there no provision for a NON smoking area where Guests can enjoy their meal under the open sky? Why is that entire area designated a 'Smoking' zone?
As an ex-smoker I do not wish to eat my meal wreathed in other people's cigarette smoke just so that I can enjoy the open skies!
3) Continuing with the Aretoussa, the variety of meats could be more varied. My wife cannot eat fish or shellfish, but every evening about half the offered dishes were either fish or shellfish. She also doesn't like Pork. Not for religious reasons, she just doesn’t like it because of how fatty it tends to be.
Result? Some evenings she was left with a Cheese salad!
Why no Chicken? Her best evening was when Chef offered a delightful Beef Wellington.
4) Why is there no provision for Guests to make their own tea and/or coffee in their rooms? Most hotels of 1* upwards, worldwide, seem to find this a perfectly acceptable practice.
5) Why not designate an area as 'adult only' accommodation.
6) Improve range and strength of WiFi. It was often too weak to use in room 38.

Room Tip: AVOID rooms 37 to 42! See Report for reason!

Although this reviewer appears to have enjoyed their holiday, it is a great shame that the comments that they have made under their ‘cons’ section were not made at any time during their stay. Therefore we thank this reviewer for giving us the opportunity to comment publically on one or two things that they found disagreeable during their stay.
The Elounda Bay Palace is an International Family Beach Holiday Hotel set in a unique and beautiful corner of the Mediterranean. It is not the hotel policy to segregate any section of guests. Most families enjoy their evenings with their children and we have an evening fun club for the children which includes a film or organized activity for our junior guests. Guests have the dining options of an extensive buffet with 5 different chefs cooking an al fresco range of dishes which changes theme nightly, plus the additional choice of 5 a la carte restaurants all serving vastly different menus, from Traditional Greek to Polynesian cuisine. All restaurants across our property have non smoking outdoor section of the restaurants. As our hotel provides 24hour room service as part of our dedicated service to our guests, we only provide Tea and Coffee making facilities on request. We have a large range of accommodation and facilities within our hotel and could have easily and quickly solved any annoying problems with a simple room change and a word with our Executive Chef. We would look forward to welcoming this reviewer again to the Elounda Bay Palace and of having the opportunity to making their stay as tailor made to suit their requirements as possible.

Kind regards

Stayed for 2 weeks May/June. First visit to this hotel and could not fail to be impressed. Location and views across the bay are exceptional particularly so when seen from the main dining room. Could not fault the staff nor the management who were always helpful, attentive and had a smile on their face. Their mission was always to provide a first class service throughout the hotel - beach attendants, chefs, gym staff and indeed eveyone we met, strove for excellence. Everyone took a pride in their work especially the Chef and his staff who were only too willing to advise and encourage us to explore the wide and varied menu on offer. Rooms were spotlessly clean and towels changed daily. Plentiful supply of sunbeds and parasols which were instantly provided whenever we approached the gardens or beach.
Very safe and secure environment and we certainly look forward to a return visit.

Hotel complex set in a stunning location, Great having drinks in the beach bar at the edge of the sea.Hotel rooms are being refurbished at the moment but didn't interfere with our stay.We stayed in room 364 which had a lovely ocean view from our balcony. Our room hadn't been refurbished but was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Bed linen and towels could be changed daily if requested. The rooms on the two floors beneath us were in the process of being refurbished. we were only a two minute walk from reception but guests staying in the bungalows further along the complex faced a longer stroll, but a buggy was available if required. We ate once at the fish restaurant,as we were half board, but had a 25 euro allowance each, which didn't go far! Still the location was beautiful and a very enjoyable dining experience, complete with gentle live music.I must say that the chocolate souffle was to die for. My husband had a sea bass starter and then grouper fish for the next course, which was delicious. I had the sea food moussaka, which was just ok,but the steak i ordered just melted in the mouth. Not much in the way of vegetables on the plate but complementary soup and sorbets appeared during the meal. We ate a couple of times at the greek restaurant at lunch time, eating lovely fresh salads which were about 16 euros each. If you just wanted a quick snack just order a pizza off the kids menu, the staff didn't mind.
Food in the hotel buffet bar was very good but not the best i have experienced. The only draw back was the price of the wines. The same bottle of wine at a shop in town for 13.50 was on the wine list at 60 euros. I expect to pay a bit more for a bottle in a restaurant but i think the mark up was rather high.
The staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for you and we had a very pleasant stay. Plenty of sunbeds and no need to save with a towel.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms on the 3rd,4th and 5th floors should be ok but rooms lower down in the hotel may fi...

We would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Elounda Bay Palace with the readers of the Trip Advisor website. As the hotel is situated in a secluded bay and reaches down to the waters edge we have the advantage of being able to offer our guests uninterrupted views across the bay of Mirabello. It is a pleasure for us to learn that you had such a good holiday here with us and your kind comments have been passed on to the staff. We would like to point out that the prices of our wines start from 22€ a bottle, and we do offer a great range of wines based on the vintage. The service and ambiance in which we serve our wines cannot be compared to purchasing a bottle of wine from a super market. Our aim is to make a holiday stay here at the Elounda Bay Palace the stay that exceeds our guests’ expectations. We are looking forward to welcoming you again to the Elounda Bay Palace for another stay in the near future.

Kind Regards,

A big thank you once again to all the excellent staff and management of the Elounda Bay Palace for yet another wonderful holiday, we have been to this hotel many times though mixed personnel times in our life and despite going to other holiday destinations around the world this is the one and only place we are always gravitate back too.

The Elounda Bay Palace for us meets all our requirements, friendly competent staff who we are always pleased to see, hard working and caring management, fantastic location with beautiful scenery and scrumptious food, I'm even getting used Raki.

For us now its not a case of if we will go back its just a case of when.

The Hall family.

Room Tip: Rooms are varied so be realistic and do your homework.

We chose Elounda bay palace for our first time in Crete. After the transfer from the airport to the hotel which should have taken one hour and 10 minutes, took us 2 hours and 45 minutes much to our frustration. But as soon as we met up with the staff at the hotel they were very sympathetic and agreed to deal with this issue, which did not seem too much trouble for them.We found the staff and service excellent with very high standard. They are a great asset to the hotel because they do their utmost to make your stay a happy and memorable one.We personally would like to thank all the staff especially Aliky, the reception manager;Victoria and Monica-guest relation; Maria and Maria-reception; Dimitris-F&B manager; Manolis-maitre; Andonis-chef; Kristos-sou chef not forgetting Mr. Sotiris Radikopoulos- general manager who we congratulate for leading one of the best hotel on the island. We very much look to return in the future but this time we will stay put. The location and ground if the hotel was amazing.

Room Tip: Higher floors with sea view is worth the extra.
