I've been to Elounda residence for a few years now and i keep coming back. The staff is so nice, the food is great, the hotel is not too expensive and the facilities are great. But most of all the view is magnificent and the most beautiful view i've ever seen. You should definately come here!

Returned last week from our first visit to this hotel. Had a great time. Yes, it is up a long steep road but the walk is worth it. If you don't fancy the walk there is a courtesy bus which runs 4 times a day now (not 2 as I've read in read in previous years). Had a 1 bed apartment which wasn't the biggest but big enough for 2 people. Cleaned very well every day without fail and towels and bed linen changed every 2 days. Food was alot better than expected. Plenty choice inc sausages, bacon, beans and eggs cooked different ways every day for breakfast and dinner too many choices to mention. Can't comment on lunch as we were half board. Special mention to George the maitre'd. He is a lovely, lovely, hard working man who has worked there for 25 years. Also works as a dj and driver there too. Theadora the lovely waitress also deserves a special mention.

The resort is delightful can't think of enough great things to say about it. If you havent read the book The Island by Victoria Hyslop try to do so before you go as a visit to the island of Spinalonga is a must but will mean so much more if you've read it. Try a gyros pitta at Dimitris, you won't be disappointed.

Carhire well worth ago got great price and service from Eagle carhire. Crete is a lovely island and it's well worth getting out and about and seeing as much of it as you can.

Thanks we'll be back.

The views from here are nothing short of spectacular, however there is a price to pay. The hotel is situated half way up a mountain and access is very steep in places. You certainly need to be extremely fit and able,to walk up and down to the village and beach of Elounda. I would not recommend a stay here for young families or persons of a mature age (like myself) unless you intended to hire a car for your holiday. The hotel provides four daily transport runs down to the main road at the bottom of the hill but you still have to walk about half a mile to the main beach. Times of transport are 10,12,15 and 1700 hrs. So you have to leave beach at 1630ish to get the last ride home. Unless you pay 5 euros for a taxi. But not all drivers are willing to go beyond reception. My wife and I do walk a lot but this became a toil after a couple of days.
If you are unfortunate to be located in the high room numbers you still have a 400 metre hike up a steep hill to your room from reception. Low numbers best. Most of the British seem to be placed up there( at least during our stay). Maybe it's because we don't complain a lot.
The rooms are basic and we found the standard of house keeping very poor. The mattresses in our room (underneath) were soiled and left a bit to be desired.
.Beds not made on a regular basis, floors not swept properly but we did have clean towels everyday except one day the maids forgot to leave any but that was quickly resolved and towels delivered by minibus. The shower was good and plenty of hot water. Our room looked up the mountain with a slight view of the sea if looked far left. Air conditioning was fine.
The service in the reception and the restaurant area was very good. Always obliging and helpful. The breakfast was very good and plenty of variety but the same each day.. The evening meal, for me, left a lot to be desired. Seemed to be a mish mash of this and that. Except for the chicken when on offer. Although we were on half board basis we ate down the village for fifty percent of the time. That meant taxi back later at night.
The pool area was very pleasant offering stunning views but could be a bit windy at times. There is also a small shop on site. Just as well as you could not carry much up from the village. It's worth paying a bit extra to save carrying your purchase too far.
Having read other reviews it seems a bit confusing that they are so different and varied but for me if I won a free holiday here in a raffle I would not accept it. It is our intention to return to Elounda but to a different accommodation.

Returned after a ten night stay, all inclusive - best holiday ever! Roula (manager) and her fantastic staff Tracey, George (x 3), Maria and others all exceptional - very, very friendly and helpful. Plenty of choice for food - salads, meat, fish, pasta - could not complain. Holiday made even better by fantastic friends of all ages who we laughed, drank and danced together with. Friendliest hotel we have ever visited. Anita and Peter

All other reviews are true. The staff are pleasant , though we didn't find them exceptional. We had booked two separate rooms but were given one two bed roomed apartment. We did challenge but were told it was big, so at 11.30pm and after a very long day we weren't in the mood to argue. We did later take this up with our holiday rep, who said that the hotel was full so we couldn't be moved.
We were taken to our room in the hotel transport, which was just as well as I don't think we would have been able to drag our cases up the hill to our room. Very very steep.
The rooms are fairly basic. We were thankful that we had booked fully inclusive as the kitchenette was not sufficient to cook anything.
The rooms are in two story blocks going up the hill. Whilst quite high up the hill, Ours was a ground floor room, and so the view from the balcony was obscured by the block in front of us. Furniture on the balcony was basic and not condusive to sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine as chairs very upright and uncomfortable.
The over the bath shower was lovely and very powerful, however, it's not attached to the wall and so you have to hold it all the time. You can ask at reception for a hair dryer, we didn't so I don't know if they charge or what they're like.
The beds weren't very comfortable. Mattresses were very hard. There is an air conditioning unit in the bedrooms, but ours was leaking and water running down the wall. We did report it, someone came to look at it, but it didn't get fixed, though I think they thought it was.
There is a safe in the room, which they charge 20euros for, but it's not very big, and cannot fit an ipad into it. However, we were assured that there hadn't been any thefts reported so wouldn't be a problem!
The food was very nice, and plenty of it. Breakfast choices were typically, cereals, toasts with honey, marmalade etc. fried food, eggs, beans, tomatoes and of course chips! They also had rice pudding every morning, which I personally loved. Water melon was always available along with fruit salad and ice cream. Coffee was from a machine and very strong. There was a selection of flavoured tea bags. I'm not normally fussy about tea but even the regular black tea was scented, so I didn't bother after the first day and wished I'd taken my own.
The pool is lovely and clean. There is no slide though as shown in brochure pictures, and all the sunbeds are screwed to the floor, so you can't move them around. I found this really odd, but having encountered a very strong wind on a couple of days maybe this was the reason why. The views from the pool deck were fantastic. They have a games room where you can play table tennis (free), air hockey and pool, and computers for video games for which there was a charge.
Entertainment each evening, which was quite good, Greek dancers, karaoke, etc. or there was a big tv which was showing the World Cup matches when we were there, however, this was without sound. There was free wifi in the public Areas
There was a shuttle bus that dropped you back down the hill to the main road, from where you could walk into Elounda, it runs 3 or 4times a day. First bus at 10am, last one at 5pm. A taxi back was 5euro from the centre.
There was a track that went direct into Elounda, which was about a 15min walk, you wouldn't want to do it with young children, buggies or if you are elderly though as it was very steep at the bottom, we're talking 40degrees! All in all it was a fairly quiet hotel, there were a mixture of people from young families, young couples, to retired couples, and even a group of young girls, but it's definately not a place for 18-30 types. We wouldn't return, mainly due to the location and the steep hill every time you returned to your room, and because the rooms were so basic and couldn't really sit out on the balcony, which was always in the shade. But it was nice and relaxing

Room Tip: Ask for rooms as close to the pool as possible, then you will have less hill to walk up

We arrived at the hotel around 3:00am to be picked up by the hotel bus as it located up a large hill with only a small road. We were given a warm welcome and received some fruit, sandwiches and water which was a nice touch.

We were then taken back down the hill and shown to our apartment in Elounda Olive Garden Apts and Studio which at first we were annoyed about as we were not made aware we would not be staying in the main complex when booking but this turned out to be a blessing.

On our visit there were a number of people who asked to move from the apartments to the main hotel with one couple describing it as 'worst than any hostel they have stayed in' but we had no problems whatsoever. Yes it may not be 4* but for the price we paid we weren't expecting too much from it and there certainly wasn't anything wrong with it.

We were in studio 4 which was large enough with a good sized bathroom and balcony with a (kind of) sea view - not as good as you would get from the main resort. Fresh towels were provided every day and the room was kept clean. The only issue was that it is a hand held shower which could be a little awkward at times. There was a good sized fridge with freezer compartment. Two jobs, kettle, toastie machine and plenty of plates, glasses etc ( although we only cooked once as preferred to eat out each night)

The main advantage from these apartments is the location. It is a 2 minute walk from the supermarket and a small (ish) stony/sandy beach with amazing views and very nice water for swimming. The town is just a 10 minute walk along the beach path with plenty of bars/restaurants along the way.

We preferred to be away from the main resort as we enjoy visiting the area for the day and eating out at the main town and we were able to do this on our own time as we could just walk, whereas if you are at the main hotel you would need to get a taxi or face a very steep long walk (shuttle buses run at 10, 12' 3 and 5). Although we were away from the pool we didn't find this a problem as we caught the bus up at 10 and back at 5.

Overall we had a great stay and don't understand why so many other people seemed to be complaining about the accommodation (unless you weren't self catering then it would become an issue having to go up the hill for meals). Great location, great pool at the main resort and good accommodation. We would definitely return!

Room Tip: If you are self catering and want to explore Elounda the Olive Garden apartments are a great base
