“Great setting but lacks personality and style”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

It has all the ingredients on paper but somehow does not pull off its 5 stars. The rooms are comfortable, not luxurious but showers good, towels soft, all sorts of pillows available - very clean. No black out curtains (unless you ask) no extras unless you count a bunch of grapes and water (!). It lacks sophistication - I agree with other reviews that the facilities are there but staff are cold and areas look tired. No wifi in the room is tiresome as is waiting for the funicular to go to pools, spa and beach. We had a very quiet room which was ideal - but the use of the word bungalow is totally incorrect ! The staff are surly and the spa is bland. The gym is ok and has 3 decent running machines, free wrights up to 12.5 kg and some fairly good multi gym equipment once you figure out how to use it. The resort is VERY VERY windy, the bottom pool is salt water and the top pool heated (just) and chlorinated but good.

Dear Guest,

I thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you enjoyed the setting of our resort as it is indeed magnificent.
Although it came as a surprise to me I sincerely apologize for finding our service impersonal and not up to your standards, as we always get positive comments regarding our staff’s quality of services. Your invaluable feedback is important to ensure that we continually deliver the ultimate experience Blue Palace is renowned for and meet your expectations for future visits.
I sincerely hope to have an opportunity to welcome you back again.

Kind regards,

We had 12 nights here in June in one of the "bungalows" with pool. Our room was on the level below the tennis courts and was so quiet we even slept well in afternoon siestas. Room very spacious, lovely bathroom, excellent toiletries and nice touches like weather forecast left by the turn down maid each evening. Breakfast buffet with champagne was excellent and spoilt for choice. Best place to eat on the resort in the evening was Flame - pricey but worth it for food, view and service. Blue Door and the Italian were ok, didn't try Asia Blue. Snacks in the main bar by reception and from the beach bar were fine. Lots of little tavernas and a decent shop for drinks etc in Plaka just 5-10 mins walk away depending on how fast you can walk in the heat! Worth walking beyond the first few as there are more further into the village.

We loved the resort and what we saw of this part of Crete, including a trip on the Blue Train from Elounda up into the hills, boat trip to Spinalonga and a morning in AgNi in a tropical storm! Would definitely recommend the Blue Palace for anyone looking for a relaxing break in a beautiful place where you couldn't be better looked after.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the Funicular unless you're an xhibitionist

Hotel has all the facilities to justify its 5 stars, however, it looks like it has lacked in investment/attention to detail and quality over recent months. Some examples would include;
- Chipped plates and glasses in the restaurants
- Lots of tiles missing from the pool (thalassotherapy) in the spa + two of the water features not functioning
- main pool (saltwater) not heated, therefore underused and lacking atmosphere
- main pool; one of the lights is floating loose, filter guards are missing
- lighting, bulbs our across the property.

This hotels saving grace is the staff - they are fantastic

Third stay at this wonderful resort! Coming back feels like coming home due to the warmhearted friendlyness of the people and the excellent service. Beautifully decorated Rooms with private pool well maintained and very clean. The wonderful enourmous saltwater pool was a wonderful temptation every morning. Excellent for swimmers before swimming later in the day in the cristal clear sea. Breakfast on the terrace with the wonderful view to Spinalonga every day a delight. The surrounding of the place allows a lot of sportive activities, of course all kinds of water sports but also for mountain bikers.
The Spa offers excellent water gymnastic every day and excellent treatments. Beautiful taverna with a great team and very good steak restaurant at Flame with also great salads! It is a strong point that the team of the hotel is the same now for many years and most of them are very motivated to give the guests a special feeling . All in all we are looking forward to our next stay at this outstanding resort.

Room Tip: Island suites and rooms have the more modern design and provide more privacy

We spent a week at the hotel as a family of 3. We had specifically requested a high floor away from the funicular (following advice from trip advisor website) and the room was perfect - quiet and well equipped. From the moment we arrived, when we were met by 2 members of staff, the service was impeccable almost all the time.
The "dine around" half board was excellent value, giving you the chance to eat at any of the 4 restaurants from the a la carte menu. Food was excellent in all 4 restaurants and service was great in all except the Asian restaurant. Would highly recommend The Blue Door where the manager was really friendly, and Flame where the food and service were brilliant.
Breakfast was really good - lots of choice and freshly squeezed orange juice.
Lots of space to sunbathe around the pools, in the gardens or on the beach (the pools are huge) and a lovely private bay to swim in the sea.
We used the water sports centre and the water ski instructor was English, encouraging and friendly - it was our first time but he was great.
The gym, spa and indoor pool were very relaxing.
All in all, a fantastic week

And the breakfast......take an hour to taste everything, more than complete: delicious!!!

I have never written a review of any hotel we have stayed at, but we were very disappointed with the Blue Palace Hotel. We arrived and were not greeted very well (shortage of staff I think) and ended up having to find our own rooms and take our bags. I have boys aged 12 and 14 and there was very little for them to do apart from the waterspouts (where my eldest had a bad experience with the guy on the boat, who was probably the least encouraging water ski teacher I have ever met). The tennis courts are slightly away from the hotel, and although this was one of the main reasons for going as the website said they organise tennis tournaments and happy hour during the week - neither of these happened (until I complained and they managed to find a couple of Greek boys from the local tennis club). The Guest Services did nothing to advertise the tennis, so therefore why would anyone sign up for it. Normally at a hotel of this standard there is free wifi in your room, but they charge €50 per week for that service. So we had to sit in the Reception area to look at emails etc - not very relaxing! We were charged for one meal which was almost inedible and I had to argue as to why I wasn't going to pay for it for the next day or so. We spent the following week at the Elounda Beach Hotel, which was far better - much more welcoming, nothing seemed to be a problem, there were so many more activities for the boys to do if they wanted to - water polo, basketball, mini-football, tennis tournaments and the water sports personnel were really friendly and encouraging.
