“This is a truly exceptional hotel!”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

This was our second visit to the Blue Palace and we just had an amazing time, again! The warm welcome we received from the exceptional staff was brilliant, our room was absolutely gorgeous with an incredible view of the beautiful island of Spinalonga (to which we could swim to!), we felt our shoulders relax a soon as we entered the spectacular lobby! There is a great choice of restaurants to eat in, from Italian to Greek (Sophia is a delightful waitress at The Blue Door, the Greek restaurant overlooking the sea). We were looked after at breakfast - which is a magnificent spread of all you could ever want and more - by the most delightful lady, Florentina, she was just fabulous! The food is a culinary delight using fresh Cretan produce - my body felt totally nourished and rejuvenated! The spa is in another league! The best I have ever been to! And I am fussy! Ask for Katerina - her stone massage will take you to another level! The spa reception was brilliant, Babis, Maria and Aggeliki. The Pilates instructor, Alma is a Godsend, an absolutely fabulous woman, she sure worked us hard with such personal attention and professionalism. I really enjoyed the aqua aerobics in the spa's gorgeous pool! There is an absolutely amazing jeweller at the hotel too, Yanni - he is one of the nicest, most genuine and honest people you will ever meet. His knowledge of stones is incredible and I cannot recommend him highly enough, the designs are simply exquisite! Our daughter, aged 9, was forever at the watersport centre either on the doughnut or sofa ride, the team there were magnificent! Top of the pile was Clare, the Manager of The Blue Palace, she is and an absolute gem and a real credit to such a magical place! The only downside - we had to leave! We'll be back next year!

Stayed for a week at May half term. The staff are fabulous and the breakfasts are also great - one of the best I've ever had. Rooms are very nice and beautifully cleaned and serviced. The food in the hotel restaurants is good, although not exceptional - the Blue Door taverna by the beach in particular has a lovely atmosphere. Wine is expensive but good and probably only what one would expect in a hotel of this grade. You only get complementary wifi in the main lobby and bar - everywhere else you have to pay. This is a very minor issue in what was a lovely stay in a hotel I would totally recommend, but nevertheless I think making you pay for wifi these days in a hotel of this quality is a bit mean!

Room Tip: Try not to get a room in the blocks next to the funicular lift that goes down to the beach as the ba...

We returned from the Blue Palace on 5th June after having a lovely time at the hotel. We arrived slightly to late for our dinner as we had booked half board and all the resturants were just closing or closed. We wern't to upset as we thought if we are hungrey we will book room service later and after unpacking went to the bar for a drink. We were very pleased and suprised when we went back to our room to find a table full of fresh mackeral, salmon, cheese, bread, olives etc, beautifully laid out and at no charge. We tucked in and it was extreamly nice and very welcome. What a thoughtful suprised and it got our stay off to a good start.

The view from our room was directly in front of Spingalona and stuning - we were in room 435 and it was in an excellent position. The room itself was very clean and a good size and as I said a stuning view. Air con was great and bathroom good, though perhaps the shower could have had a little more power to it, but this is personal preference as we like a power shower. Hot water was plentiful at all times of the day and night. The turn down service was excellent and room cleaned twice daily. We do have to agree with other commentors that the Pillows are awful. Far to soft.

When we arrived there were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, but half way through our stay a coffee machine appeared at a charge of E1.80 per capsule. We did not use this, but when we arrived back in our room the next day the coffee machine had been replaced with a kettle and tea bags which was free of charge - very welcome and what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. It would be nice though to have coffee and milk as well. We just went down to the supermarket in Plaka (5 minuites walk away) and problem solved.

The staff in the bar are wonderful, paricularily Maria and Varvara, who were always pleasant and friendly, though all the staff throughout the hotel were very nice and very helpful at all times at the service was very good. Towards the end of our stay we tended to use the facilities on the upper level at reception as we were not that impressed with the beach, but again that is personal preference. However, I would say that this is not a beach where you could let young children play, or that they would be occupied as it is made up of large pepples and the only access to the sea is off the pontoon where they would jump into about four foot of water. Personally, if I had young children I would prefer a sandy beach where they can play in the sand. That said for sunbathing the beach is fine and the facilities around it were very good. You can also look forward to an unlimited supply of beach towels if needed.

I used the Spa and had a head, shoulder and back massage which was excellent. The Spa is also the best I have seen in a 5 Star hotel with free facilities for Sauna, Turkish, Gym and indoor pool as well as an amazing Thellaso therapy pool - the biggest and best I have ever seen.

We used the Arsenali bar and resturant, the pool snack bar - these were very good. As we had booked half board (for the grand upgrade price of 28 pence) we did have one dinner in the buffet resturant. The food was good quality, but we were not impressed so chose not to go again. We went either to Elounda (7 E each way taxi) or Plaka (a short walk) for dinner every other night and again the food was great and good quality. We did not eat in any of the hotel resturants as we thought they were over priced, but again this was personal choice as we also like to get out and about a bit.

The drinks were also expensive, but you have to expect this when staying at any 5 star hotel, but even we raised our eyebrows a little when we had a chit for 21E for 1 bottle of sparkling water and 2 small glasses of what was basically house wine.

Something the hotel has no control over which did spoil our stay a little was the wind. Apparently for the last three years Crete as a whole has suffered from high winds (this is definately NOT a cooling brease) as well as cold nights and rain until mid June. When this happens, you would hope that a 5 star where visitor come largely for the weather would take steps to do something for guests, but we did not see any evidence of this. Also in the Arseneli lounge (the one you see on all the advertising materials) on three days of our holiday, the soft furnishing and cushions were removed or covered to protect them from the rain and even after the rain had ended it was sometimes 5 or 6 hours ( or more) before housekeeping replaced the cushions or removed the covers. This did dissapoint us as well as other guests. For example, it rained on Tuesday 3rd June in the afternoon (about 4) and the covers were put on and not removed until Wednesday the 4th June at 6.30 during the weekly managers meeting - which we did not attend, though invited.

The enterainment was also awful. Though the singers and piano players were good, it was a bit 'music to slit your wrists to'. While I would not want a rowdy show, something a bit less maudling and depressing would be nice - guests are on holiday after all!.

All that said, we did enjoy our stay and the hotel was very good, but we would refrain from giving it an excellent.

This was only the third time we had taken a holiday in a 5* Hotel and were slightly apprehensive that the atmosphere may not have been relaxing, our previous experiences in Cyprus having been less than perfect in that regard, but we need not have worried. All the staff in the Blue Palace were genuinely welcoming and helpful at all times. We stayed in a Superior Bungalow with private heated pool, and this more than met our expectations. We did already know from Trip Advisor reviews that the sun went off the terrace by around 12.30, but it stayed on the pool until well after 3pm and although not completely private, we did not feel intruded upon by users on either side. The maid service was quite exceptional.

I have some mobility problems and use a stick to walk, and cannot comfortably manage too many stairs; this was not an issue as the room was located close to a lift to the reception level, from where the constantly running trolley car/funicular operates to the levels of the Flame Restaurant and down to the beach area where two other restaurants are located. We did not dine in any of these restaurants, as we had chosen the hotel for its proximity to the village of Plaka, which is only a few minutes stroll away. This village is only lightly developed considering its location, with several fish specialist tavernas of which we sampled two, and a particularly welcoming bar/tavern The Carob Tree (see separate review). In this respect the Blue Palace was perfectly located for our holiday needs.

We ate in the hotel only twice, other than breakfast. The buffet for breakfast was a delight, we defy anyone to think of something they would like to eat at this time which was not provided, and we looked forward to it daily. However the evening buffet, which we chose to eat on our first evening due to the time of our arrival, was far from being value for money. From another review we had seen that it was 55 euros a head; this would not have been a problem if the quality had matched the price, however we found the salads to be unimaginative and bland and the main courses very limited and tasteless. We have experienced far better buffet meals in far less starry locations. This however was the only criticism we have to make, as we would certainly return to this lovely hotel without hesitation.

The view is unbeatable --- the staff courteous and eager to help with the smallest detail.
The Aegan --- the pools (salt, regular and infinity) --- OMG.
The food and restaurants --- fantastic.

There isn't a single thing I would change.

Room Tip: Ask for superior suite --- comes with own infinity pool.

We booked Blue Palace on our second trip to Crete. We have a 5-year old daughter so we booked a family room.

The room is not big, and the rollaway bed for my daughter is also on the small side, but that's about all our complains.

We have a heated "infinity" pool in front of the room, and looking across the bay is the majestic Spinalonga. Every morning we watched the sun come up behind the castle, casting hues of red and gold on the silhouette of the castle.

My daughter loved to swim in the room's own pool, while the location of the resort is convenient enough to access the attractions in the lassithi prefecture, and the nice restaurants around Elounda harbor.

Room Tip: get the room with the pool.

This is a very nice hotel in a beautiful setting overlooking the island of Spinalunga. Staff was extremely nice and friendly. Service was generally excellent. Food was generally good, with a big breakfast buffet, some nice food in Flame (a steakhouse basically) and in the Greek Taverna. We did not try the Asian restaurant.

As far as the rooms were concerned, the maisonettes are a kind of duplex with infinity pool. They are much better on the web site than in practice, as the outside open lounging area is quasi inexistent. It is mostly covered by the top floor and then there is the (small) pool. There are also maisonettes on the left and on the right, so little privacy really. They are quite pricy, and to me are not good value for money. The suites are much larger, better decorated and have a outside heated pools with big terraces and, though more expensive, are better value for money. I would recommend to go for one of those if it is at all possible to stretch the budget.

Generally, this is pretty pricey at all levels and some things such as lack of wifi in all rooms (only the suites have it) or lack of iPod speaker is inexcusable as this is now standard, even in much cheaper hotels. Instead, the rooms have a TV surround system which is basically useless and clutters the rooms. For the same money, one can do way better in the Indian Ocean, but that is much further away.
