Elounda Ilion Hotel

We have stayed in this lovely little hotel near Elounda. It is built into the hillside looking out over the wonderful Mirabello bay and towards Spinalonga. We went for a deluxe room and had loads of space and a great balcony. Don't know what the standard rooms are like but it may be well worth splashing out on the refurbished rooms. Aircon great and the bathrooms very nicely finished too.
The excellent food is served buffet style and there is a good little bar by the pool which offers snacks and salads during the day. The staff are extremely friendly and cannot do enough for guests.

The pool terrace is a great way to pass the day, with spectacular views to the sea. If you would prefer to swim in the sea you will need to cross the quiet road in front of the hotel and go down a lane to the waterside where there are sunbathing platforms and rocks to swim from. All in all an idyllic spot away from the crowds. If you want night life you have to get a taxi into Elounda village, but even that is not like some of the more "out there" resorts - it's more about restaurants on the quayside and in town.

Sightseeing is great - Spinalonga is a must see but you can also catch the bus into Aghios Nicolaus for a small fare - the worst bit being the climb from the Elounda Ilion up to the bus stop on the hill. Ag Nic is well worth a browse around the lake.

Do go and visit the Ilion - you won't be disappointed. Be warned though that it IS built into a hill so there are lots of stairs which would definitely hamper those with walking difficulties.

My Partner and I had a magical week in Elounda Ilion at rthe end of May 2012. We were in room 1 which was fabulous, loads of space lovely outdoor area and of course stunning views.
This wasn't our first visit, and will certainly not be our last to this gorgeous town and fab hotel. The pool area and bars are excellent and again enjoy amazing views, also we were HB, which was gorgeous.....can't wait til next year!!

Stayed here June 12 for two weeks two couples in two rooms. The hotel was lovely, was on a hill but we knew that, and steps not a problem and we are in our 50's and 60's! just took our time. As said previously the views were outstanding loved them, the pool area lovely with decking. The rooms rather small with no drawer space had to leave some clothes in the case, never had to do this before, should have upgraded, other rooms better, but you only sleep there. maid service every day spotless.
Now the down side, the food was much the same every night every thing in sauces and very bland, always salad, cheese, nice desserts, melon. I love Greek food and we are not fussy eaters but this wasn't that nice, ate out quite a few times, breakfast OK. Snackbar nice food lovely and fresh.
The drinks were very expensive 5 euros a pint of lager, 4 euros a glass of wine 2 euros coke etc I know you pay more in a hotel but to us this was extortionate, only 2 euros a pint in town, that is why there was nobody there in the evenings if they put the prices down there would be more people drinking there. It was such a shame as Dimitri the bar man and Alberto the handy man come waiter were lovely they work really hard, as most of the staff here restaurant, snack bar, and maids all pleasant and polite. We found a lovely little taverna at the back of the hotel out of the car park and up the hill turn left at the back of a shop, made us feel so welcome with lovely meze's, and drinks.
The walk into Elounda was 40 mins away walking slowly in the heat it was 40 deg some days, taxi back 7 euros. lovely town and would go back but would stay nearer the town and a different hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to bungalow room. no lifts and lots of steps.

We have just returned from this hotel having spent a glorious relaxing two weeks. We arrived in the middle of a heatwave which even the locals were saying was hot. 40 degrees plus on some days. I agree with other comments that the hotel is set on the side of a hill and that there are a lot of steps and steep slopes to encounter, however the views more than make up for aching knees etc

On our arrival reception didn't see us on the CCTV so we had to pull our cases up the steep driveway in seering heat and more than a little tired after the journey. A tip here, at the entrance to the hotel there is a small white box on the left wall, it contains a phone linked to reception, give them a call and they will come down and give you a lift up.

Negatives over, what can I say, the staff were probably the most friendly and helpful ever encountered in a hotel. Nothing was too much trouble. the girls in the pool bar were brilliant and as for the food they served, it was always fresh and hot and tasty and not expensive. I would highly recommend the Cretan meze to share, 10euros for a plate of local specialities.

The pool area was clean and never seemed that busy, we often commented ' where does everyone go' Again laid out on your sun bed overlooking the stunning bay, what more do you want.

We had a bungalow which was fine, always kept clean by the maids who were again friendly and always prepared to speak to you. The bed was a little hard but you did get used to it.

The food in the restaurant on an evening was plentiful and again fresh and tasty and the staff helpful and polite and always taking time to speak to the guests.

The bar area was great and Dimitrie who worked every night we were there was very charming and gave quick service. However the best of all the staff was Alberto, the bar waiter and general handyman, what a character. He seemed to work from 8 in the morning to 12 at night always with a smile and a word to say.

The walk into Elounda takes about half an hour passing two shops on the road where you can stock up on water to drink whilst on the walk. The road is narrow in places with no footpaths, however at night I would suggest a taxi back, great value at 7 euros.

As for other prices, we were a little concerned given there problems but no worries at all, in the hotel a beer was 3e, ouzo 2e, coke 2e, cocktails about 7e so really no different to what we pay back home, only it tasted better!!

Will we go again, you bet, can't wait, its a little bit of paradise that we don't really want to share but felt we had to.

Have just returned from after a perfect time just Chillin by the pool hanging out at the pool bar and the bar at night. The staff where friendly and very helpful. The food was good most night the was a very good choice of food and it wasn't just chips with everything in fact we only had chips one night in the 10 days we were there. The only downside was the walk up the hill after we where dropt off but a member of staff came and help't us. The walk into Elounda is a bit of a trek but worth it walk in get a taxi back only 7eur.if you can get the taxi from the airport because the coach trip is so long at least2.5hrs.

We have just returned after a weeks holiday here and can honestly say that if you are looking for a relaxing holiday that doesn't break the bank with friendly staff and stunning sea views you will not be disappointed with the Ilion.

The only downside to staying here was the shuttle coach transfer from the airport, this took us 2 and a half hours, but was due to the number of drop offs along the way to different resorts/hotels. Some people we spoke to had said their transfer had varied from between 1 hour 15 minutes up to our 2 and a half hours so I think that is pot luck. You can get a private taxi transfer which we were told takes just over an hour and would cost around 80-90 euros so if we return here next year which is likely then this is what we will do.

After being dropped off at the bottom of the driveway by the coach driver we started to lug the cases up to reception which is a steep climb when you are tired and the heat hits you! Lucky for us were were greeted by a member of staff in a car on the way down the driveway to collect our baggage, reception had seen us on their cctv camera being dropped off so came down to assist us.

After reaching reception we were made very welcome and promptly checked in and shown to our room. We had booked a superior double sea view and are very glad we did upgrade and pay the extra for this room type if only for the view. The room itself was clean and had everything you needed including a mini bar, for water, soft drinks around 2 euros although we did find a small shop just a few minutes walk from the hotel so you could get your drinks much cheaper from there and keep them in the fridge. The tv only had limited channels and the only english ones were the usual world news and music, but who comes on holiday for the tv. The only downside in the room for us was the hard bed and after a few nights of sleeping on it you did start to ache, but it may suit some people. The bathroom had the shower over the bath and the design isn't great, the shower screen is very slim in length so didn't stop the water splashing onto the floor which could become quite slippery so be careful when getting out.

The pool area was clean, well maintained and of course had the views and a nice sea breeze. There is no daytime entertainment etc to interrupt you so you can just relax with a good book which was perfect. There is a poolside snack bar open from 11.00am to 5.00pm and there was enough to choose from, we did have lunch a couple of days, spaghetti bolognese, kebabts, rissotto, average cost around 6e.

We stayed on half board basis and I wouldn't say the food was the best I've had but there was a reasonable choice with plenty of salads, bread, and around 6 main course dishes to choose from. Im vegetarian so a few nights I was stuck with just the salad but meat eater husband managed to have something different on the nights we ate at the hotel.

We ventured into Elounda one of the nights and decided to walk, which took around 25 minutes, but not to be suggested on the way home as the road is unlit with no pavement, so a taxi back which costs 7euros is the better option. A taxi in Ag Nikolas cost 13e and we did this a couple of times also.

I don't think there is much more to add which hasn't been said in other reviews other than we would definately return here and therefore would highly recommend it.
