“Excellent location with outstanding views”
Reviewed 6 October 2012

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and would certainly stay there again. Elounda town is a 25 -30 mins walk away and serious consideration should be given to taxiing back as some of the road is not that wide with at least half of the journey being unlit. Back to the hotel itself where the views are out of this world. We stayed in what is termed a 'bungalow '. The room was relatively spacious and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was adequate but in need of a little work around the bath. Other than that it was absolutely fine and had very comfy beds.
The staff were first class and always extremely helpful. We stayed half board. However, I could see why some have described the food as lacking in variety but to be fair we had no issue with this or the standard which was more than acceptable in our opinion.
We stayed mid to late September and the weather was outstanding. The pool at the hotel is excellent and as with the rest of the facility, was spotless. The pool bar has a decent menu and the food was tasty and plentiful.
There is a local shop some 2 minutes down the road towards Elounda (Turn left at the bottom of the hotel drive). The shop is well stocked and the local beer is called Mythos and a half litre bottle can be purchased for one euro 35 cents from the shop in question. A pint of Mythos at the Ilion hotel will set you back 5 euros normally or 3.5 euros during happy hour (Literally one hour during the early evening!!)
Elounda town was unusually quiet to be honest but the locals put that down to the current lack of faith in the Greek economy.
There are excellent walks in and around Elounda and it's clear that a considerable amount of money has been spent on the harbour and surrounding area.
Do not miss a trip to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. This is an amazing location with an incredible story to tell so be sure to go. The boat ride takes some 30 mins or so and cost 10 euro return.

Room Tip: Consider taking a taxi from the airport as our transfer there took 2 hours 20 mins with the return t...

We stayed at the hotel at the end of september and had a wonderful and relaxing time. We stayed in a bungalow which had beautiful sea views. The room itself was very basic but we were out all day and night so it didn't need to be anything but basic. The room was cleaned everyday and we were given clean towels everyday. The pool area at the hotel is really good but we had to get up early to secure a sun bed. The pool, bar and restaurant area also has beautiful views over the sea. All the staff at the hotel are very friendly, helpful and hard working. We very much enjoyed our stay at elounda ilion and we have already looked to return next year.

Stayed for 2 weeks at the end of September. Arrived late at night so had no idea how amazing the view was until the sun came shining through our balcony window. We opted for a Superior bungalow and it was well worth it.

Staff were brilliant, particular mention to Dimitris, Albert and the pool bar girls.

Will certainly be back

Stayed for a week mid September , we stayed in a superior sea view bungalow which was booked as a half board package with Olympic. We booked a taxi transfer to the resort which took around 50 minutes .
We were made to feel very welcome from the minute we checked in , the reception staff were always very friendly and helpful. We were delighted with our room and the stunning view from the balcony . The room was a good size with plenty of wardrobe space and the bed was comfortable - we both slept well all week . The bathroom was a decent size , air con worked well .
We both liked the food , there was a good selection both at breakfast and evening meal , the staff in the dining room looked after us very well and were very pleasant.
The pool area was lovely , never had a problem getting a bed on the days we went to the pool , food at the pool snack bar was also very nice. There was some entertainment on one night (not usually our cup of tea ) but we did enjoy the night and having a laugh with other people .
The walk to Elounda took us about 30 minutes to the start of the village , it's not a bad walk ,taxis will cost about 6-7 euros . We did walk back a couple of times but make sure you don't need the loo as its not much fun trying to hurry up there when you are needing the toilet !!
We went to the beach a couple of times - the public one just before the causeway and it was lovely the water was warm and absolutely crystal clear ,wear beach shoes to get in and out of the water as it is rocky .
We ate our lunch in various tavernas and ate out twice in Elounda and once in Agios Nicolaos and never had a bad meal
The weather was good , flights on time and we missed a months rain falling in 24 hours at home ! A lovely holiday , would we return ? -yes we would to both Elounda and the Ilion Hotel.

We stayed ay Ilion in Sep 2012 in one of the rooms just near the main road. We saw the sea from our room but mostly the back of the hotel that was in front of it. The rooms were ok, they tried to clean every day, but just with a mop you couldn't take all the sand away(we rented a car and gone to sandy beaches because there isn't any beach in this area just some sunchairs at the water front). Towels changed daily though not very clean-I have just expected more from a 4 stars hotel. For a 3 star it would have better. Our biggest problem was with the food. Very dissapointing were both breakfast and dinner. For example, as I read in some other reviews, breakfast was 'eggs covered with oil or scrambled (tasted like powdered egg ) bacon again covered in oil', sometimes beans and some uneatable sausages. Tea and coffee were horrible. At dinner there was no difference, there were 5 dishes to choose from, one vegetables, one potatoes si 2-3 types of meat. The sweets were awful and there weren't any kind of drinks included, not even water. The people who served in the eating area were very nice.

The main advantage of this hotel is the spectacular view.
But I wouldn't return just for that.

Room Tip: The higher uphill the room the better

This is our 3rd stay at the hotel Ilion. We normally go in May or September. We went in August this year and the hotel was a little too busy for us. But that is our preference and no criticism of the hotel.
I had e mailed the hotel manageress Anna and asked for our favourite room, but unfortunately it was already booked.
On arrival we got the same warm welcome that we have received on every other visit and were told that our first night would be in room 22 but there after Anna had put us in our favourite room, What service!!!!
Anna and her staff are warm and welcomming and nothing is ever too much trouble.
The views that the hotel affords are fantastic. The room we stayed in was well equipped and cleaned everyday.
Another wonderful holiday.
Thank you Anna and staff. We will be back
