Had heard so much of this island where Greece had established a leper colony in 1903 and deported all lepers there initially from Crete and later from all Greece. Took a boat trip there from Elounda which cost euros 10.00. You then have to pay euros 2.00 for entry to the island.
The boat trip takes about 20 minutes to get there and you have a hour on the island. You can walk round the island comfortably in about 45 minutes.
It is quite astonishing to understand that this was a leper colony until 1957.
It was a walled and fortified island from way back in 16th century and you can understand why it was chosen to hold the lepers.
Well worth a visit.

Seeped in history - lovely boat ride over (€10) - €2 entrance fee, not for those unsteady in their feet. May be worth reading the history before visiting - get very busy with lots of tour guided party's - recommend you visit first thing 9-9.30am

After a thoroughly enjoyable visit to spinalonga as a child with my parents, cousins, sister and running around it, playing like wild animals I had a somewhat different experience when I returned at the age of 25.
After reading 'the island' I knew I had to visit spinalonga on my trip to Crete in May 14. It's a truly inspirational story and I would recommend anyone who visits reads this book beforehand.
We booked the trip through the little excursions shop on the square which also does foreign exchange. We left Elounda on a boat and went to another natural beach where we swam in the clear waters and had some lunch. We then got back on the boat and headed to spinalonga for a 1 hour guided tour. In my opinion the hour was not enough to explore all that the island had to offer but the guide was very informative. We returned to Elounda about 4 hours after setting off and went for cocktails in a bar called .the Mediterranean' which overlooks the ocean. It was a perfect day!

If you have read the book The Island this is a must see visit, all though most is now in ruin you still get a cold shiver when you enter through the tunnel were the lepers who were sent there had to go, many never to come home again.
