Had heard so much of this island where Greece had established a leper colony in 1903 and deported all lepers there initially from Crete and later from all Greece. Took a boat trip there from Elounda which cost euros 10.00. You then have to pay euros 2.00 for entry to the island.
The boat trip takes about 20 minutes to get there and you have a hour on the island. You can walk round the island comfortably in about 45 minutes.
It is quite astonishing to understand that this was a leper colony until 1957.
It was a walled and fortified island from way back in 16th century and you can understand why it was chosen to hold the lepers.
Well worth a visit.
