This was the hidden gem we had been looking for and were so very glad to have found it.
We had the entire place to ourselves for a week and it was glorious. The pool was perfectly clean the entire time and Vaggelis was an amazing host - he even brought us fresh cucumbers picked that morning! The lovely Monda also cleaned every other day so the place remained spotless and we had fresh towels and linen as required.
That said, if pristine and perfect monochrome is your style this is not the place for you. We were looking for authentic, local, rustic and peaceful, which we got in droves. There's no air con, but a fan works just fine; there are no shops within walking distance, but there are lots of very friendly locals who were happy to converse with us in hand gestures as neither of us spoke much of each other's language. For us this was exactly what we had wanted - a break away from it all and surrounded by stunning scenery. There's a view down to the sea from one end of the garden, two patios for dining and a fabulous outside oven.
Word of caution though - this place is located in a small, local hill town and there is wildlife here! The crickets are loud and the local dogs do like to bark. It didn't wake me but my husband found it woke him a couple of times and I can imagine lighter sleepers would have a harder time, so bring ear plugs and you'll be fine.
There's a cracking little taverna up the road where we ate several times at astoundingly good value (Psomi and Alati). Then it's a 10 min drive to Plaka and it's beaches, tavernas, gorgeous shops and short boat hop to Spinalonga. 5 minutes further and you're in Elounda which has everything you could need.
Highly recommend renting a car for your stay and exploring from this base - there is enough to enjoy for many weeks. We'll be back to continue our exploration of Crete and to stay at Almond Villa in Vrouhas, it really is a wonderful place.
The house is located in a little village up Plaka and not in Elounda at all. Very hard to find. Carr is mandatory. The pool is nice and the garden as well but need better care. The house is pretty but there is no view and the living-room/kitchen is not welcoming. We had our meals always outside. There is no air conditionning downstairs. The bathroom is too small and very dark. We did not sleep very well. Dogs were barking dutring the nights. There is no WIFI.
The road from Plaka to Vrouchas is beautiful. Fantastic view on Spinalonga island.
Our stay in Almond Tree Villa was not as good as expected.
