The exhibition of the palatial period is simply amazing! Some pieces are indeed breathtaking, such as the Disc of Phaistos and the Snake Goddess statuette! Worth a visit at any cost!
Too bad the Museum Shop did not sell a guide or a catalogue!

An excellent museum, which pulls together all the Minoan artefacts and expertly puts the flesh on the bones of what we saw at Knossis and Malia. Definitely worth the visit to see the stunning finds, which are arranged in such a way to really give one a sense of the era. Recently refurbished, this museum was light, airy, cool and evidently curated with care. The interpretation boards were most informative and the artefacts were displayed to their best advantage.

If you are going to Knossos a visit to this brand new museum is a must. Combined ticket for both the museum and Knossos was 10 euros which we thought was very reasonable. The displays are well presented, with enough background information to set things in context, but the artefacts themselves are breath-taking, the level of craftsmanship on even the most basic items amazing.
We went in the morning and allocated 2 hours for the visit and it was only just enough time to get around. The museum is large and air conditioned and only became over crowded when one of the guided tours came through. We visited Knossos after the museum and it was helpful to get an understanding of Cretan history before visiting Knossos as the information there was not as detailed.
We were short of time so were forced to eat in the museum café which we wouldn't normally do, however it was surprisingly good, reasonable prices with a variety of snacks on offer and a covered in shaded outdoor seating area for customers. A very enjoyable experience.

Makes the stones and ruins mean something. There's a combination pass with the Minoan "palace." It saves you a few euros, so it's worth getting the combination pass. The museum is far more interesting than the palace as you see the genuine artifacts instead of facsimiles, thus allowing you to reconstruct the Minoan/Cycladic culture more accurately..

This is a new and well designed museum which has quiet dignity. The outside space has gardens of cool shade and benches where local people sit to chat; an oasis in the centre of Heraklion. Inside, the displays are well lighted and easy to move around. The massive wooden representation of Knossos at the height of it power is an amazing piece of joinery. On the first floor, the iconic mosaics from Knossos are presented without fuss and again the gallery is spacious enough for all to take their time viewing these wonders.
