“Highly recommended for a family stay”
Reviewed 29 January 2018 for a stay in December 2017

We are a family from Estonia - 2 adults and 2 children aged 8 and 10. We stayed there for 2 months. Genuinely hospitable and kind host family, really very nice people from all their heart. Clean apartment and surroundings. Everyone of us had a lot of activities to do while staying there. Sea/beach is just a few minutes walk away. We all especially enjoyed the spatious downstairs playing room with table tennis, lots of board games etc. The apartment included everything necessary for living and was comfortable. Wifi worked well. Very friendly neighbourhood, secure place for children to play outside. Lots of space to park your car. Price and quality relatio was not just excellent, but even above our expectations. Highly recommended place!

“Great place to stay”

This is one of the best self-catering locations I've stayed at.

If you've a large family or friend group and you want somewhere to stay this is an ideal spot. Its a short walk to the beach, which has a gently sloping sandy shore and is ideal for swimming (and there's a shower in the garden to get the salt water off). Along the sea-front are numerous tavernas to eat at, and up on the main road there are the typical tourist shops alongside a couple of supermarkets and some more great places to eat. The rooms themselves are all comfortable and beautifully decorated, with air conditioning, each with balcony access. And the communal areas are spacious and well equipped, with enough separate areas such that you won't be tripping over each other. Its well equipped, well fitted out, light, airy and comfortable. There are tremendous views of the ocean and islands on one side, and mountains on the other.

You're close to the bus route to Heraklion (with Malia at the other end) so if the laid back feel of the locality isn't to your tastes you can get in to the city or out to the crazy party towns.

The landlord sorted out taxi connections to and from the airport for us, and also car rental. They're accommodating and friendly, and when we arrived they'd left us bread, honey, jam, milk, and other supplies including their own rather savage Raki and a couple of bottles of wine.

Down sides - its got Mediterranean plumbing so loo roll goes in bins, and there's more hot water after a sunny day than in the morning (solar water heating). And if you don't like cats don't go there, its completely over-caturated. Its also on the flight path to the airport, but thats true for all of the resorts along this stretch of coast.

Do - eat the local cheese, hard breads, and vegetables. Drink the wine and risk the raki. Visit the tavernas and swim in the sea. Go to Knossos. Travel up to the Lasithi plateau and walk in the mountains. Swim in the ocean. Go to the Venetian castle and the museums in Heraklion.

Don't - try to understand how people drive there. Visit the dinosaur park. Expect to have room for a starter and dessert at any of the tavernas.

All in all this is a tremendous place to stay if you're travelling overseas as a group. Highly recommended. .

“Superb location for a group holiday”

Booking – Owner and agent both speak excellent English, were very friendly and met us for a full tour of the accommodation and facilities, as well as being available to help with airport shuttles, taxi booking, car hire, local advice etc if needed. Assistance was never more than a phone call away...
Bottled water and breakfast goodies were provided on the first evening – a very nice and unexpected touch.

Location - Walking distance from everything we needed. Five minutes walk from the sea front, multiple local taverns, supermarkets and bars. Ten minutes walk from a bus stop with quick, regular links to Malia and Heraklion. Twenty minutes walk from the center of Gouves which has plenty of shops, car hire, tour booking vendors and yet more restaurants and supermarkets.

Accommodation – very high quality décor and furnishings. Clean and well maintained. Comfortably accommodated our party of eight. Full kitchen facilities including a much used espresso machine – more than enough for 100% self-catering if needed. Bathrooms were all good sized and each had shower facilities. As with most buildings in the area the hot water is solar heated, so was more than enough for afternoon/evening showers, but was naturally cool first thing in the morning. Air conditioning in each bedroom so sleep was easy on even the hottest nights.

“Wonderful chilled villa”

I found this place in a trip advisor search based on location and ease of public transport and couldn't be happier with it.
The villa is spacious, accommodated 8 adults very easily with plenty of room for all of us to have our own space.
Each bedroom was lovely with its own balcony, each with comfy beds and plenty of storage space.
The villa itself had good facilities, the kitchen was well stocked and the owners provided some basic food stuffs for our arrival which we really appreciated as we arrived late evening.

The location is as advertised, 100 yards or so from the sea and a lovely but tiny little beach with a good location for swimming. There is a bigger stretch of good sandy beach about 20 minutes walk away. The sea front has a good variety of tavernas and the town and bus stop is only 10-15 minute walk up from the front. Lots more tavernas and shops, supermarkets and tourist shops.

Villa owners were happy to arrange taxis for transfers and car rental.

Very easy to get to Heraklion (20 minutes and another bus out to Knossos) and further east down the coast to Malia and beyond. The bus service does not run to schedule but is clean and comfortable when it does arrive. Easy to drive to Lesethi plateau, well recommended. There are tour operators in town with regular coach tours but driving gives more flexibility.

Two small warnings. Firstly like all Mediterranean houses the hot water is generated by the solar system. Lots of hot water in the afternoon. Not so much on a morning.
Also the plumbing is via septic tank. No paper goes in the toilet, it goes in the bin.
If either of these are deal breakers book a hotel.

There are lots of cats in the general area, most very friendly but easy to keep out of the house.
