We (2 adults, 2 children 14 &12) recently enjoyed a weeks holiday at Vergis Epavlis and cannot recommend it highly enough. Everything about the accomodation was excellent, the rooms were spotless and beautifully furnished offering stunning views across the valley. The pool was very clean and very well maintained. Other travellers have mentioned the breakfast which was a real treat (the yoghurt and honey a particular favourite !) with Stella making a different hot dish everyday - fantastic !

It is centrally located so is a good base for travelling about the island and the nearby village of Agios Myronas has a few small shops and a taverna that offered good food and value for money.

A special mention must go to the staff and, especially, Stella and Stellios who really did make this a special holiday for all of us. They were the most helpful and friendly people you could hope to meet and it felt like we were being welcomed into their family, not just their hotel !

We had been the first guests of Stella and Stelios in 2005 and we returned with our 7 year old to find that nothing had changed and all was as warm and welcoming as ever. The couple and team of lovely local ladies work hard to make the stay as personal and memorable as they possibly can. Nice touches like a hot breakfast dish every morning and a naughty dessert (chocolate mousse, fruit jelly, cake etc). It's hard not to put on a few pounds whilst there! We had forgotten quite how hospitalble the Cretans are - free dessert and raki in 99% of the restaurants you visit. The driving requires nerves of steel and it's the only thing I find difficult - everything else about Crete and Vergis Epavlis is amazing. A late summer break to treasure - last Saturday on 2nd Novmeber we were swimming in the sea at Matala! Fabulous - do try it and immerse yourself in the Crete warmth....

Room Tip: Eros is our favourite suite

Recently, my husband, adult son, and I spent 8 days at the Vergis Epavlis. We found the superlatives used by other travelers to describe their experiences at this lovely small 4-suite inn to be absolutely true. The owners, Stelios and Stella, go well beyond what is expected in order to make the stay truly memorable in the absolute best sense. In fact, staying here was very much like a warm and welcoming visit to the home of dear friends as compared to that of staying in a regular hotel or inn. Below are a few of the highlights that we enjoyed during our stay:
- standing on balcony of our suite in the early morning, having breakfast in the restaurant, or sitting poolside in the late afternoon all while enjoying the breathtaking scenery overlooking a picture postcard view of the valley below
- anticipating and enjoying the wonderful breakfast that included traditional Cretan cuisine. The number of items included in the selection was large and it was obvious that much care and skill went into preparing and presenting the breakfast fare. Stella takes great pride in serving only the freshest local items which also includes picking pomegranate from the trees on the grounds of the inn (of particular note for my son who loves this fruit). Stella’s concern for guests’ enjoyment always included her insistence that we take extra along with us to enjoy later in the day.
- discussions with Stella about activities for the day. We appreciated getting a local’s opinion on the sites that were “must see” and the ones that could be omitted from a crowded itinerary.
- Tuesday night “fish night” in the restaurant. Other travelers have indicated that this should not be missed and we concur.
- visits to the local taverna in the village (Agios Mironas) which is a short walk (albeit uphill) from the Vergis Epavlis. The food served in the taverna is simple, traditional, and delicious. The upstairs is open air and provides a view of the valley below. One word of caution – it is very easy to order more than one can possibly eat, given the large servings and tempting selections, only to learn that meals are followed by complimentary (large) fruit platter and dessert and a round of raki for the table.

Given the location of the Vergis Epavlis, it is necessary to have a car if one wants to do much “touristing.” We were very concerned about driving on the narrow mountain roads to reach the inn. However, Stelios picked us up at the airport the night of our arrival and went out of his way to show us the landmarks that indicated our path to/from the inn. As he had promised us, we quickly became comfortable with the drive. During our stay, we saw many of the must-see sites in the east (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Spinolonga Island, Lasithi Plateau), west (Hania, Rethymno, Imbros gorge), and central parts (south coast beaches such as Matala, Iraklio wine country, Minoan palaces) of the island and found the Vergis Epavlis to be a good central location from which to launch these day trips.

We were thrilled with our experience and highly recommend the Vergis Epavlis to anyone fortunate enough to visit the lovely island of Crete.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Crete you will not be disappointed. Stelios and Stella go out of their way to make sure every guest in this small hotel is well looked after. The rooms are huge, super clean and very comfortable. It is located in the hills offering spectacular views but not too far from the city. It is like home from home. Seriously, I have never written a review on Trip Advisor before but this hotel deserves to be mentioned because it is absolutely flawless. Bravo Stelios and Stella.

We spent a one week holiday in July in this lovely small hotel. All the comments written early are so true. The owners, Stella and Stelios, take good care of their guests and run the place with good and warm touch. We stayed in House of Flowers –suite and it was clean, well furnitured and beautiful. It had space enough to accommodate 3 ppl. The view from the balcony was panoramic facing the town of Iraklion and the see from the mountain. Stella served light lunch as per request and offered dinner on Tuesdays when the local restaurant in the village was closed. The local restaurant offered also good and fresh food with a fantastic panorama.
This is a hotel where I could go back on the next trip to Crete. I warmly recommend this to everybody who wants to enjoy peaceful and relaxing holiday.
Hints and tips:
- We struggled to find the hotel with GPS, so pls follow Stelios’s instruction instead. Also consider to rent a midsize car: we had a small car and it was not comfortable on the mountain hills.
- There is a small restaurant on the road to Iraklion right after the University Hospital called Taverna Katarina (written in Cyrillic alphabetic) next to a pharmacia. I serves good food for lunch and was the favorite of my very picky daughter. I warmly recommend to stop by in there.

We had a truly lovely time here. The warmth of the welcome was unsurpassed. Stella and Stelios, the owners, are very helpful and give every priority to making your stay a wonderful experience. The suites are huge and very comfortable, and it was like home from home, but without the worries. Stella prepared a wonderful range of Cretan dishes for breakfast, and dinner at the hotel was local, fresh food and local wine, and represented very good value for money. It is a beautiful, tranquil setting and the nearby village is walkable, with some small supermarkets, and a very reasonably-priced, good quality taverna - Stella will phone the taverna for you. Heraklion is about 20-25 minutes away and an easy drive, there is a bus service too, or Stelios will probably give you a lift! This was a good base too for visiting Knossos, Phaestos and Gortys, for getting to nearby beaches and for just taking in the sun by the pool, while wondering at the beautiful countryside. There is a spa, although we didn't use it during our stay. Stella and Stelios know the island well and will help you plan your stay according to your interests. We just loved it here!

This is an amazing place to stay in Heraklion. It is a wonderful 4 room property about 15 minutes from the city. It's tucked up in the hills with magnificent views & a private atmosphere that feels more like a weekend home than a hotel.

The Good:
- The hosts Stella and Stelios. They really are like your favorite friendly uncle and aunt. They almost treated us as their own children. Their hospitality is the best I have ever encountered. Little things like calling the village shop to order us gifts, calling restaurants to make sure that we reached and didn't get lost e.t.c. are what make them endearing.
- The property is really beautiful and well kept. There are only 4 rooms so very private. The pool and surrounding views are perfect for relaxing. It may cost more than other hotels but it's worth every penny.
- Beautiful sunrises.
- Breakfast was very good. Fresh locally sourced ingredients.

The bad:
- absolutely none.

Other:
- The property is a bit away from the city, a car is definitely recommended to go back and forth. Stella actually arranged for a rental car for us which was cheaper than what we got elsewhere.
- The property can be hard to find but there is a very helpful map on their website, be sure to use it!

We would definitely go there again, even if it was just to say hi to the owners!
