I stayed at the Athinaikon Hotel after arriving quite late at Heraklion Airport. It’s easy to locate if you’re driving, and has some parking space outside on the street in front of the hotel.
The hotel is not a luxury hotel- indeed it is fairly basic- but it’s clean and comfortable and absolutely fine, and also good value for money. The room had a balcony overlooking the street, but the sound proofing was good enough to mean that traffic noise was not a problem. Low flying aircraft are a feature of everywhere in the centre of Heraklion, due to the proximity of the airport to the city, so some noise is unavoidable.
The room was generally fine and the bed comfortable, though the furniture a little worn out. The bathroom was not an especially great design because the shower curtain did not enclose the shower so well (so the bathroom floor got quite wet). The air conditioning worked well, as did the WiFi.
The hotel breakfast was a buffet, in the style that is common in hotels in Greece (salad vegetables, feta, cold meats, cakes). It was good, not outstanding, but perfectly fine for staying one night. The breakfast might get tedious on a multiple night stay, and the coffee could have been stronger.
The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. More
