It was in the center of town. VERY photogenic statue. It was just difficult to take a picture because of either the foot traffic or people lounging. It's not in a secluded area where tourists are limited to viewing. It's a part of the town.

It is just a fountain, but the shopping and the gelato make this destination a score of a 3. There are a lot of places to eat and stroll, so the area is a good location to spend the afternoon.

We stopped here to eat our ice cream, there's a single bench shaded by a tree, allowing a view of the fountain and a little people watching. There were railings in 1910 and they lions used to spout water, but that has all gone. Never less , a nice place to stop for 15 mins or so after walking up 25th street.

Thank Terry W

THIS beautifully restored fountain sits at the centre of Heraklion's busiest square.
It's construction was ordered and supervised in 1628 by Francesco Morosini, a man who managed to bring spring water to parched Heraklion via a series of channels and pipelines.
The cistern is decorated with tritons, dolphins and various coats of arms with the water flowing out of the mouths of four lions, hence the name of the fountain.
When I visited the fountain I found it a very useful focal point at which to meet friends because everyone knows where it is and because the square is lined with restaurants and bars many of which benefit from shade provided by trees.
This is an important consideration as temperatures, even in early June when I was there, varied from 35C-45C. That is hot and a bit of shade was very wecome.
The fountain also marks a handy point from which to depart on walks to see other things. A little hgiher up and no more than 50 metres away is the start of a popular shopping street with handicrafts, souvenirs, cafes and fruit juice outlets which is heavily patronised by tourists.
If you stand by the fountain with your back to the shopping thoroughfare and just walk forward then you'll soon find the street dropping away downhill towards the harbour and the historic Venetian fortress which visitors can walk round and also go up on to the ramparts to look across the harbour and up at the city.
But the fountain area kept drawing me back and I was quick to grab a cold drink among the crowds there and just watch life go by while relaxing for a bit.
A lovely place and any visitor to Heraklion should make a point of seeing the fountain where lions spout water rather than roar. Great little place and the main archaeological museum is only a five minute walk away.
