“Family Hotel with a few minor problems 2011”
Reviewed 22 September 2011

Accommodation was good as was the food. Kids pool was excellent but the adults pool was too deep. 1.7 metres all over, and only accessible from two ends. OK if you are a good swimmer. The walled jaccuzzi was underwater and we saw several swimmers hit their heads on it. The hotel pool staff held games and exercises every afternoon for about an hour with loud music which was a little annoying. Some of the music was rap and hip hop with English swear words in the songs. Not very good for the English kids to hear. The clientel were mainly Russian, German and Austrian so I don't suppose they noticed. We mentioned it to the staff but they just shrugged their shoulders and laughed. The lift doors were temperamental in the fact that if the first person in pressed the floor button they closed hard on the following people . We saw one or two people with large bruises on their arms because of this.

Room Tip: High floor sea view

We booked this hotel about three weeks before our departure date so the only real reviews we had were off this web site. First impressions were good nice and clean with A very helpfull night manager (we arrived at just after midnight and were told that some food had been saved for us if we wanted it) When we went down for our breakfast the next day and saw the variety of food available and the outside seating area we were really pleased. We found at all meal times you could get a outside table overlooking the sea if you wanted to.We found all staff really helpfull and most could speak english to varying degrees the reception staff inperticular were exceptionly helpfull. We took our nineteen year old daughter and fourteen year old son with us and both really enjoyed themselves. We went to the taverna at vainia a small village at the bottom of one of the mountains twice( just for a change of scenery nothing to do with the hotel food )it costs eight euros each way in a taxi but is well worht it we had three large beers three bottles of wine and three cokes a mixed plate of meats and kebas plus lots of different tapas type dishes and a greek sala for eleven euros each we were the only tourists in there and every table was taken it opens round about eight and is open every day apart from monday.

Room Tip: we paid ten euros per night to upgrade from mountain view to sea view

We are a family of 2 adults, an 11 year old girl and an 8 year old boy.

What made the hotel for me was the staff (especially reception). Always happy to help, despite the very long hours they work, 7 days a week.

The waterslides shown on the travel republic website have been gone for years. It is best to look at the hotels own website for this. (Travel Republic - get it sorted!) There are some good slides in the kid’s pool. The main pool was deep and good, mainly 1.7m.

Food was good, always something for us to eat. The hotel was very clean, the pool area hosed down every morning, and a cleaner picked up rubbish and emptied the bins during the day.

It was nice that is close to a real Greek town, it was not too touristy but had nice bars and a few tourist shops.

Since the British tourist jumped off the balcony with 2 of his kids 1st Choice doesn’t go there anymore. So a lot of spaces are now taken by Russians.

Entertainment every night, kids disco thing first, then the usual sort of Mr and Mrs and Karaoke. But the bar is good, the kids tended to play pool for 5 Euros an hour.

The shop is good and about the same prices as elsewhere.

We upgraded to a sea view for 10euros a night. It was worth it, but the Mountain View inland is good.

Transfer time on a coach is about 2 hours, an hour and a half by taxi. BUT when we arrived the transfer company kept us in the coach for an hour and a half as waited for other planes to arrive! We booked the transfer through travel republic.

If you take your laptop, the wireless is free. Or use their computer for 5 euros an hour.

I enjoyed the holiday and would recommend it, or go back again.

I always like to give and honest opinion on all hotels that I stay in as I have read bad reviews and when gone enjoyed the hotel so I do pride myself on honesty and I am happy with clean hotels and nothing fancy. So this may seem quite a negative review but overall the hotel is ok just not a 4 star hotel and could do with some customer service training. On arrival you are given an all inclusive bracelet and an a4 sheet of paper with breakfast lunch dinner times and no other information is given. You are not informed that the hotel does not change towels everyday and if you complain they said you shouldnt put them on floor when dirty and dont give you any other towels until the next day. The bed linen isnt changed either everyday. So would not rate this as a 4 star hotel. There are towels for sunbeds but again no info was given on this so still dont know how you get them and if they are chargeable. The reception staff arent polite or friendly especially stella and rania. Hotel entertainment is dismal and finishes every night at 10.30pm. The rooms are not as seen on their website these only exist on the first floor which if available are 15 euros extra per day. Rooms numbered 00 - 32 are sea view rooms the rest are over looking the houses and back view of mountains. The food is really good and dont have a bad word to say about it, plentiful although you have to be quick when they replenish as they russians and germans go in for the kill and stack their plates high. This hotel caters for mostly slovakians, russians and germans and god they dont have any manners. When you call for a lift they will just push in front of you and get in and they havent heard of queues. The snack bar is basic by the pool and drinks are in very flimsy plastic cups. We have only just got back today and there are quite a lot of flies around this time of year. Water sports on the beach are quite dear 15 euros for the rings etc and 35 for the jetski 10min. You can get them cheaper on the beach going east 25 min car drive and the sand is nice here and soft. As the beach at the hotel is terrible it is shingle and burns your feet with the heat. Water is clear though. The pools are good for the kids although be careful of the decking boards around pool as they are not secure and if you tread on one side they shoot up as they are not all screwed down. The hotel is on outskirts of lerapetra and only a 10 minute walk from the busy lerapetra city where there are plenty of tavernas, bars etc. I recommend Castellos taverna which is lovely food, lovely staff and owners and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Room numbers 00 - 32 are seaview

I stayed at the petra mare hotel in Crete as part of a group of family and friends during September 2010; this on an all inclusive basis for which prior to arrival wasn't even a consideration having experienced poor hygiene standards in numerous all inclusive resorts throughout the med.
We arrived during the middle of the night and the staff were very accommodating, opening the main restaurant to allow us all to take drinks to our rooms whilst providing warm milk for the younger members of the party. The rooms throughout the hotel are evenly split between a land or sea view whilst all maintain a high standard in terms of space and comfort.
The main hotel complex is approximately 30 years old and is traditional greek in style and design whilst the pool and recreational areas are modern contemporary which makes for a wonderful transition of blending the old with the new - this also makes for a beautiful ambience during the evening with live entertainment and open air music bar sure to enhance the customer experience.
I highlighted the all inclusive element within my opening paragraph to draw attention to the pleasantly high standard of food and beverage available day and night; sure this can become a little repetitive however the standards in terms of hygiene and presentation were never compromised.
The transfer time from Heraklion to Ierapetra via coach is approximately 3 hours and therefore I highly recommend taking a taxi as a faster (direct) alternative means of transport.

Me, hubby and two sons ages 10 and 8 stayed at Hotel Petra Mare for 11 nights in August. We hired a car as we had read that the transfer takes a long time, it took us just under 2 hours to travel between Heraklion and Ierapetra, with beautiful views all the way.

The hotel is right on the beach which we needed as hubby loves snorkelling and gets bored lying by a pool all day. About a 10-15 minute walk to town.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, we asked to change our room as the first one we had was right off the 3rd floor lobby where the lifts and stairways are so was noisy at night. The receptionist remembered 2 days later when a different room came free and called me over to give me the key to check if I preferred it, this one was ideal at the end of a long corridor so much quieter at night.

The rooms are comfy, spacious and have plenty of storage (we brought 4 suitcases snorkelling equip etc,and had a large inflatable lobster and crocodile to accomodate also!) The blinds really block out the light so you can get a lie-in as we found out one morning when we actually missed breakfast! There is a narrow balcony with table and chairs which is great for drying towels on. The hotel is very clean, rooms are cleaned every day with fresh sheets and towels every day except sunday. There is someone cleaning everywhere you look.

We stayed all inclusive: the food is fantastic with a huge choice available at each sitting. Breakfast inludes cereal, cheese, salad, doughnuts, cakes, fresh bread, cooked sausages, bacon, egg pototatoes etc. Lunch I usually had a salad, there is a huge choice of veg/olives/beetroot/feta etc with delicious dips, especially the tzatziki and aubergine dip. Always a large choice of hot meals too, and soup. The kids always found something to eat, there was pasta everynight, fish, meat dishes. There is also a fresh grill where they make burgers, kebabs etc. The desserts are fabulous, always a huge choice of cakes, baklavas, fruit. Big mention to waitress Rania who is lovely, and sorted us out with a packed lunch for a last minute trip to Chrissy Island. The chef is a great dancer too :-)

The pool is refreshingly chlorine free - yay! It is salty, but not as salty as the sea. It is extremely cold and refreshing, with a jacuzzi area and hydrotherapy shower. The infinity pool looks out over the Libyan sea and is directly above the water sports shack on the beach with a great view to Ierapetra town and the venetian fortress. There is a great childrens pool if you have younger kids, ours used the slides in the kids pools quite a bit, but tended to practice diving and jumping in the large pool.

The snack bar opens from 10 - midnight and serves cakes, chips, bread, cheese, ham, watermelon, beer, wine, tea, coffee and soft drinks, The soft drinks are nice, I don't drink alcohol and occasionally got tired of lemonade and orangeade and bought a non-alc cocktail for £3 or a frappe for £2.50.

There are plenty of sunbeds and parasols round the pool and on the beach. The beach is quite grainy and gets very hot, we wore crocs. There is a shower to rinse off before you come back up steps to poolside. The snorkelling is fantastic, my hubby and 8yo went every day and saw plenty of fish. A couple of days it got very windy and a bit choppy and a red flag was put out to close the beach for swimming. It generally was quite windy while we were there, which was great as it was 31 degrees at least every day so the breeze keeps you cool.

We have never stayed at a hotel with entertainment before so dont have anything to compare it too but we thought it lacked a little when talking to my brother about his hotel in Egypt. The music quiz was good fun, and my 10yo sang in karaoke. to be honest there were hardly any other Brits at the hotel, the majority of guests were Czeck or Russians and they don't join in much. They also don't queue, and will quite happily take a lift you have queued for and push in at breakfast etc. Seems to be a free for all policy, you snooze you lose :-) There is yoga in the morning, volleyball, aquafit. There is a pool table(expensive) and table tennis and games machines too.

We got talking to the owner of On the Rocks cafe Dimitri, who told us that the hotel was exclusive to first choice for 10 years, but is now booking privately hence the lack of Brits staying there. You must try the Gyros Pitta at his cafe - superb. All in all we had a fantastic time and would definately go back.

After several years we had the opportunity to get away and wanted a relaxing holiday. We decide we wanted a place that had some historic attractions but really this time we simply wanted to spend most of the time bathing in the sun, sand and sea. Our Travel agent friend here in Budapest gave us a few offers and we decide on Crete and the Southern coast.
All our expectations were met! My wife and I are both experienced travelers and have slept in tents and mountains tops and in five star hotels, so we have a wide base for comparison. We were both very satisfied and have since recommended this hotel to many friends.
Of course it depends what you want... The hotel is first and foremost a family hotel and there are lots of kids, which doesn't bother us as we have four of our own (whom we did not take with us this time, but would love to take back to the hotel in the future). The customer service is top notch fast and friendly service from the cleaning ladies (we once locked ourself out of the room), the dining room staff, waiters, waitresses, cooks etc, reception and all. The room had a GORGEOUS ocean, view!!! and my request to but put in a quieter part of the hotel got us this upgrade to the top floor and the sea view in a part with fewer kids, only once did we hear a kid running up and down the hall (for 5 minutes). The room is large and spacious with AC and a nice bathroom and an old Hungarian Lehel brand fridge ;-) there were two bottles of "welcome water" when we arrived and that we then replenished form a nearby shop.
The food was ABUNDANT with great variety, my wife and I have very different tastes she being very veggie and me being a glutton (who also loves to cook). Yes the food is oilier and blander than what we are use to, but they have to accommodate several hundred different palates, there was something delicious every night, we both loved the loads of fresh vegetables and feta cheese and tzaziki sauce, I enjoyed the fish and the evening fry-up, the morning doughnuts were impossible to resist and I just had to have 5-6 with my coffee (I have not stepped onto the scales at home since and will not do so until I starve myself for a week beforehand... Anyway the food has something for everyone!!! And it never ran out, the snack bar being open after breakfast until I don't know when... No the wine isn't great, but the bear is the nice light Greek bear that is very refreshing and the ouzo and raki and poured liberally if that is your taste. We spent several nights sitting down at the bar, (always had a table by the rail) watching the sea, sipping ouzo with soda and ice and enjoying a cigar (my wife had a coke).
The beach and pool were just perfect! Yes you do have to stake out a claim to a chair and umbrella in the morning, so when you walk down to breakfast you take a towel and through it over a couple of chairs. spent hours lounging by the ocean every day and it was amazing! The hotel has a long lovely dark sandy beach (take lots of lotion and apply at least twice a day) We spent all week except for two days on the beach and it was great.
One day we took a local bust to Heraklion and Knossos, another day we rented a quad and toured the hills, but both days we got back in the afternoon and ran into the sea.
The hotel has an OK gym and I was able to work out (did 3 times, should have every day).
We only took part in two evening programs, the music quiz and the Greek night, both of which were fun. We wanted a relaxing get away and not crowds, that's why we chose the southern coast and why we didn't go to any big happenings.
We strolled through the town of Irapetra a couple of times and it is a pretty and pleasant little place, not at all crowded and not too touristy, another plus.
Anyway... to finish up... We got all the we hoped for from this all inclusive package and had one TERRIFIC week. I would strongly recommend this hotel to any one travelling with kids, and also to anyone who wants a week in the sun, sand and sea!

(I do feel a need to comment on some of the negative comments that some people have left, and that I read beforehand... I am VERY GLAD that I ignored them and though I do not doubt their sincerity I do not "understand" them, I have only good things to say...
God Bless
