“Just a landmark”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

When you see this fortress lying on the edge of Ierapetra coastline, you feel thrilled. But when you actually land up at the place, all you manage to get is a walk on the fort walls and the view of the surrounding through the roof top. The fort does not have access to the interiors and that cuts the curiosity. Yet, to spend some quite time (and we got a lot as we visited in December) in a couple, the roof walls of the fort gives majestic view. All in all, if you are in Ierapetra, you cannot miss spending some time here.

“An empty shell, little to see of interest really”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

We were looking forward to our first visit to Ierapetra and being a devout fan of all things Venetian, I was eager to see the fortress. Compared to the offerings at Chania, Rethymno and Iraklion, it is rather disappointing though, a bare shell which you can walk around the outside of in five minutes. No labelling of any description except for a tatty wooden sign that points you into the appalling public toilets that are ensconced within the fortess wall.

It was of course built to defend the harbour entrance and there are also some remains on the opposite side of that harbour. It's usually exceptionally windy in Ierapetra and today was no different, so if you decide to walk along the side of the fortress that directly faces the sea, look out for whipped up waves and spray, and be careful not to be literally blown over by the wind.

If you want to drive all the way here to see the fortress, then unless you are a scholar of Venetian history, I really wouldn't bother

“The wind and water splashing...”
Reviewed 4 September 2012

Visiting Ireapetra means visiting Venetian Fortress!! It's a very attractive place. Well standing beside the sea, but it gives not more opportunities as going around the outside walls. The best side for walks is the part of the walls in contact with the see. The wind at that August day gave us special moments. Libyan see and the clear deep water, the wind and water splashing over you after clashes at the rocks; is total unforgettable.
View is magnificent, investment to the Fortress in our observation lees at it should be. On the other hand such a place and the position to the best part of the city bring also a very precious historical time and more information about it will increase the interest of the visitors.
In doubt of giving a valuation in between 3 and 4 because less care I decided with difficulties to classify: average. But this place deserves more as more care will go to it.
