“Great place”

Made our annual visit to Crete and stayed with Helen and Sean once again, fresh eggs and their own olive oil waiting for us and a welcome cup of tea with Sean and the dogs. Didn't see Helen this time as she was in the UK with her family. Unfortunately I was taken ill on this holiday but Sean looked after us and made sure we had everything we needed until I was able to get out and about again. Apart from that we really enjoyed staying at Arete Apartments once more. Still good views to sit and look at across the valley.

“A wonderful place to stay!”

We had a wonderful stay at Arete. Sean and Helen were excellent hosts and really helped us to get the most out of our holiday. They were incredibly knowledgeable about the local area and we were keen to listen to their suggestions. We enjoyed some great walks with Sean and the dogs (we hope Inka's move has gone well!), met the locals, sampled the wine and enjoyed genuine Cretan hospitality. It was a very memorable holiday and felt we really benefited from their experience.

The views from the apartments are wonderful and you could sit looking out all day. We felt we needed a car and it would probably be tricky to get around without one. We had anticipated travelling around more but when we got there we found it so peaceful and relaxing that we didn't really want to!

The apartment was just right - plenty big enough for two of us. It was well equipped and the bed was comfy. We had two balconies - our biggest issue was deciding which to sit out on!

The location is good - the village is small and we enjoyed going to the local cafe for very good value wine. No hangovers either! It's only a short drive to the supermarket and other shops so getting provisions wasn't a problem.

We would definitely return.

We said we'd be back - and we were. We do a lot of travelling around the world, but this is where we come to chill out and relax. The welcome, the service and the apartments were as good as ever. The welcome in the local shops and restaurants is also great. We were remembered and welcomed with delight. You do need a car to get to any other than the local kafeinion, but there are plenty of places close by
If you're new to Western Crete Arete is a good base. Sean and Helen can give you lots of pointers on places to go - we find somewhere new each time. If you're interested in military history take one of Sean's Battle of Crete tours

“Unique and Different”

Read the reviews which are all complimentary!
Arete is the only location we have returned to regularly and we have never been disappointed. Peaceful, rural but not remote which offers a unique experience. A good base to explore Western Crete and the South West Coast.
Recommend a rental car as this will give you the freedom to travel anywhere.
Helen and Sean are genuine great hosts who live here all year and are a part of the local community. We recommend that you take the time and the opportunity to talk to Helen and Sean who willingly share real knowledge of Western Crete. Tips on beaches, gorge and coast walks, festivals, boat trips and authentic local restaurants will make your holiday even more enjoyable.
Sean has in depth knowledge on the history of the Battle of Crete with an interesting personal tour available
There are supermarkets and bakeries within a short drive for your provisions.
We have stayed in both apartments over the years which are very comfortable, air conditioned if needed but just open the doors and let the air run through, spacious and spotlessly clean, both with large private front and rear balconies to relax and dine on and take in the view over the olive and orange groves. There is a recently built barbeque in the garden area.

The local hospitality and generosity shown to us in restaurants and cafes was impressive, particularly in the local village cafe in Xamoudochri - most welcoming and a good place to buy bottles of the local wine. Do not be put off and think that this Cafe is for locals only - try it!
Thanks again Helen and Sean - Arete is a credit to you. We will be back.

I have spent a week at the arete crete holiday apartments, wow set in the countryside amongst orange, lemon and olive groves. Helen and Sean give a wonderful welcome and clearly love what they do, their knowledge of Crete, it's history and way of life is unsurpassed. The apartments which are immaculately clean, air conditioned and have a kitchen area have two balconies so no matter what time of day you can either have sun or shade as to your taste. The bed was extremely comfortable one apartment is a twin and the other has a double, all beds have full mosquito netting. Helen and Sean are wonderful hosts with a great knowledge of the flora and fauna of Crete, they also help with turtle watch which is fascinating, they grow all there own vegetables then turn them into marvellous meals and I was invited to share these on two occasions, educating me on herbs, gardening and cuisine. Sean is very knowledgeable about History, especially the invasion of Crete, and also has given guided tours of the battle fields. I suggest if you have an interest in anything Creten let them know before you stay and they will endeavour to to help you or put you in touch with someone who can help.
I have visited Crete many times before but the warmth of welcome, local knowledge of my hosts and cleanliness and beauty of location goes a long way to making the Arete Crete holiday apartments my first choice for future holidays.

“Delightful!”
Reviewed 6 June 2016 for a stay in May 2016

We had a wonderful week at Arete! The apartment was charming, clean and comfortable with two lovely verandas facing east and west. It was set in the beautiful Crete countryside with lovely views over the olive groves, and so very quiet - just what we wanted. Our hosts Sean and Helen were very friendly and obliging, and full of helpful local advice for places to go etc. We would definitely recommend!

Stayed with Helen and Sean at Arete in the village of Xamoudochori for a third time and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Peace and quiet apart from chickens clucking , cocks crowing and ducks quacking. The view across the valley is beautiful overlooking orange trees and olive groves, what more could you want. If you want the beach it is only about 5 to 10 minutes drive away or forget the beaches and drive into the mountains for some spectacular views. Plenty of excellent Taverna's within a short drive for your evening or lunchtime meals. Sit on the balcony when the sun has gone down and watch the stars on a clear night. Helen and Sean are there if needed otherwise it's your holiday to do what you want, I would imagine by now Sean has completed the BBQ located in the very private courtyard. Give it a try and have a nice relaxing holiday.
