“A very good Taverna | Tucked away | Good good | friendly”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

Another good return to this taverna. There are so many eateries in Rethymno it is hard to just make a decision. Here is a mix of friendly service, cheap on your money and good food. There are no complaints here. I have eaten the pasta marinara and pasta Neapolitan which is so cheap, some kolokythikeftedes and a range of other mains here. It is very good and we got lots of RaKi on the house. Good work.

“It is totally worth seeing. One of the most friendly restaurants i've ever visited.”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

Taverna vassalos is located in beautiful street in the heart of old town. As soon as you arrive one of the waiters will welcome you and make you immediately feel really comfortable. The menus are no longer confusing and misleading since they have been replaced them with new ones. The food is just magnificent. Traditional home cooking that will amaze you and will show you how cretan food is like. The money that you will pay will be less than you expected. At the end of your lunch-dinner they will offer you some watermelon and raki ,they will discuss with you and more or less become friends with you. When you visit taverna Vassalos you should DEFINITELY see and drink some raki with the founder of the taverna and the one who had been owning the taverna for 28 years . The one called "THE BOSS" or "THE PAPA". He is one of the most friendly and traditional persons that can ever exist , he has always a smile drawn on his face and it is his personality that makes him unique. Also , do not rely on competitors' comments...VISIT IT YOURSELF AND LET IT CONVICE YOU.

“Wonderful Cretan hospitality and food”
Reviewed 16 May 2013

We've been coming to this taverna every year since 2004 and wouldn't want to go anywhere else in Rethymnon.
The taverna is owned and run by one family. Mother Sophia does the cooking, son Kostas is the manager, father Kostas senior has now retired but is there every evening chatting to customers and looking after his grandson.
The food is excellent, but make sure you order the local dishes – fresh fish, moussaka, stiffado, kleftiko, local sausages, lamb chops, souvlaki etc. My own favourite is giouvetsi – a wonderful peasant dish (Google it and you'll see you're in for a treat.)
The menu is a bit overwhelming – far too many choices. However, if you ask what's good for that day, you'll be offered a sensible choice. Nearly all the vegetables are grown on the family land up in one of the villages. After rain, Kostas senior collects snails which are cooked in garlic butter – delicious. Also Kostas knows the source of wonderful wild mushrooms – if you're lucky these will be on the menu too.
Kostas junior is in the process of adding new dishes to the menu and used us a guinea pigs. When the new dishes are available in June (2013) make sure you try the chicken and the pork dishes (they haven't got a name yet).
The atmosphere is always convivial and the local wine and home made raki flows in copious quantities.
A meal for two, with wine and starters will be around 25-30 euro.

“Excellent food, value service and surroundings.”
Reviewed 25 August 2012

We have visited Vassalos over several years and always really enjoyed it. We have mainly eaten from the set menus which at between 19 and 30 Euros for 2 is good for town centre. The food is simple, freshly cooked and shows attention to detail - not many places serve local boiled greens!! The wine is cold and fits well with the food and the staff and family who run it are lovely. Yes its on a busy street but that is part of the charm. Looking forward to returning.
