“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We were passing by and took a look at the menu and as usual were approached by a member of staff to entice us into the restaurant. His approach was differant as it being lunch time he suggested a snack rather than a full blown meal. I was aware that it was highly regarded by Tripadvisor clients so we gave it a go. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and efficient. The only draw back was the large free glass of Ouzo at the end which took some drinking. We wanted to go back for an evening meal but ran out of time during our stay. So this is definately one for next time.

“We had to go to Crete to get the best meal, in three weeks of travelling!”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Ambrosia is situated on the 4 km boulevard along the seafront in Rethymnon old town. There is everything you could want in the way of dining along the road, everything from the simplest taverna to 5 star luxury. In between every restaurant there will be a mini mart or rental car company.

It is another idyllic Mediterranean night, waves crashing on the shore, gentle sea breeze and tourists up and down the footpath. After checking out the photographs of the food and reading all the menus, we were “persuaded” into Ambrosia by the genial host. There were in fact two genial hosts, similar looking, smooth and happy. They went out of their way to entertain their patrons and charm the girls. There were also two friendly, knowledgeable waitresses that added to the atmosphere. So far so good.

An extensive menu, in eight languages, and a reasonably comprehensive wine list. We were sitting right on the street overlooking the water, great for people-watching. However the entertainment was inside. The front part of Ambrosia is completely open air while inside was a huge TV screen showing the inevitable soccer (sorry football). We had been in other restaurants where there was always a TV with basketball playing, much to the distraction of patron and staff alike, particularly if a goal was scored. Part way through the evening an even larger TV was produced showing a different football game, however it was all taken in good humour.

Our drinks had arrived, my simple beer was in the largest glass I had ever seen, but icy cold. The bottle of Greek cabernet proved to be a very pleasant easy drinking wine. Our meals duly arrived on huge plates. All of the cutlery, glassware and crockery was of finest quality.

This was without doubt the best meal we had eaten on our three week trip. Everything was cooked perfectly and they were more than generous servings. After seeing other guests with their dessert we had to try them as well. Again we were not disappointed, the chocolate soufflé was sublime. The best ever, and I consider myself a chocolate connoisseur. Espresso to follow and a perfect meal, but there was more as the complimentary ouzo was served.

It wasn’t the cheapest meal we had eaten, but it was well worth every Euro. The staff were attentive and amusing and the food and wine excellent. Would I come back to Ambrosia? Unfortunately that is unlikely as I am unlikely to get back to Crete, but if I ever did I would place Ambrosia at Rethymnon on top of my list.

“A lovely restaurant well worth a visit”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

Our first evening in Crete and we came across Ambrosia. We were attracted by the fact that it was a little more busy than those ner by and the setting felt right. We experienced good service throughout and felt relaxed and comfortable sat near the windows. The food was very very good. We had moussaka and fillet beef both of which were outstanding in quality. For two of us, meals and two large beers with sprite and water, together with a Greek salad to share as a starter came to 45 euros which I thought reasonable for the quality of the fillet etc. they even throw in a Creme caramel as a free desert which was a nice touch. I would have no hesitation in returning and we may still do so before we go home!

Don't make the mistake of having a starter. The portions are massive. Friendly and good food. Two pleasant evenings spent here.
