“Wouldnt rate this hotel past 3 * at all”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Just returned after two weeks at this small hotel, What can I say. Positives are the staff around the hotel are so friendly and very helpful. Reception and Bar Area are nice, Food was very good, plentyful and a good choice. Negatives: pool area is a bit dated, sun loungers are very very old and worn, as are the 9 parasols around the pool. They did not shade the sun very much as very threadbare and in urgent need of renewing. We arrived party of 3 (2 adults and teenager daughter) checked into a standard room which when I booked was advised this was suitable for 3 adults. The staircase and corridors are so gloomy, scruffy and stairwells not lit up at all. Peeling Paint on the Window Frames and generally just looked depressing. We entered our room to find it was actually a double room with a small camp bed in the corner, the decor was dirty, old fashioned and generally tired. I was so disappointed, we went to reception and asked to speak to the manager. She came out and I advised her the room we seen on the booking was a lot bigger and could she move us please as the room was so small. She proceeded to get her Ipad and tell me that the room was the same as the internet. I told her it was not, she then advised that she could move us to a superior room for another 20 Euros a night, which would of been another 240 euros on top of what we paid. I told her no way, Unfortunately we had to stay put which was most annoying. We asked our representative if she could help the following day, and she advised we could move to another block, without a sea view, which we did not want. On returning to the box room, we discovered that the springs were showing through the mattress, so requested a replacement. The manageress who we named (Joyce Temple Savage) advised she could get a mattress topper to make it more comfortable. We did get this mattress topper the next day, but when I checked it, OMG, It was in a 70's style pattern, really dirty and had rips and seams coming away all over. It was disgusting !!!. We simply covered it with a sheet and had to get on with it. The balcony windows in our rooms had not safety stickers on the glass, an accident waiting to happen. The hotel is desperate for renovation, I would seriously give the rooms no more that 2 Star at he most. At meal times (JTS) Manageress would enter the restaurant and proceed to rake the food around in their trays (Why).
Although I have a lot of negatives, I feel our holiday would have been much much better if our room bigger to accommodate 3 adults, had been clean, bright and tidy. Desperate room and corridor renovations are needed to bring this hotel to the 3 * standard it portrays.

I recently travelled to Crete with my Fiance initially. The first week it was just the two of us and then on the second week our family and friends arrived.
We all booked into the Orion Hotel and when we arrived in the early hours, all was quiet and a bit dismal on first impressions. Our room was a little dated but decided it was very Greek.
On waking up on the first morning and pulling those curtains, the room looked different. Still a little dated but quaint, clean and adequate.
The swimming pool area was lovely and well maintained, boasting well stocked flower beds and trees, with a great atmosphere.
The Food was nice, but not the best i had seen, although very happy and satisfied after.
The staff were friendly and worked hard, and kept pouring those cocktails!
We had a superb wedding on the beach about half a mile away and when the hotel found out on the very morning they obviously worked very hard in making our room on return very special with wine, flowers, fruit and cake etc.
I would certainly recommend this hotel and I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: The lift although small, was never busy so either floor and like us the pool side view was good.

Lets start at the beggining.
RECEPTION.
Very nice friendly lady greeted us upon arrival and made us feel very welcome.
ROOMS.
Very basic, clean but in urgent need of refurbishment, Just as we expected for what we had paid.
BAR.
You could drink what you want when you want and have as many as you want, you could drink the beer all day and all night and still feel like you have had nothing to drink.
The beer was nearly non alcholic.
All branded spirits on optics around the bar, however, we saw the bar man pouring local spirits into the branded bottles one morning.
The people behind the bar were friendly and always up for a laugh and a joke and you never had to wait long to be served. All inclusive ends at 11pm.
RESTRAUNT
Not a lot of choice but always something to make a meal of, the meat was very poor quality non existant at some meal times.
The sweets were always very tasty and never disapointed.
The staff were realy nice and friendly.
POOL AREA
Not a large area but sunbeds were availiable around the garden area and this area was never crowded.
All in all a friendly hotel, british people were the minority, plenty of russians about some more pleasant than others but a lot dutch people who were all friendly.
The Hotel is on a main road with a small shopping centre next door and a good vatiety of shops and restaunts along the road.
A bus ride of around 20 minutes at a cost of 1 euro 20 will get you into Rethymnon, worth a visit.
All in all we hade a good time but would not come back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Pool View other side of hotel is overlooking a motorway and scruffy yard area.

Just come back from a great 2 weeks at the Orion. We booked a late deal with First Choice. I looked on Trip Advisor to see what people thought, and can only echo all the positive reviews that this hotel has been given. The hotel facilities are great, with clean and smart communal areas, great food, good bedrooms and fantastic service! Would recommend without hesitation and will probably return ourselves to see more of the island. (If you are a beach lover, take your water shoes, though as the beach is gritty and mad hot underfoot.)
Thanks to all the staff for good humour and prompt attention.

We arrived on the 14th June 2014 for a 7 day holiday, when we arrived it was 1:00am local time and the hotel accommodated us with some sandwiches and fruit upon arrival. The room wasn't the best as it is very basic and the hallways and rooms looked like they hadn't been decorated since the 70s, the balcony overlooked the pool and was very spacious. The food was lovely but wish there was more of an option and variety, was abit repetitive after the first few days. We met our friends, Alex, Stefan and Maria who worked behind the bar who were very friendly and hardworking, could have a great laugh with all of them especially Alex, who poured us some fantastic cocktails, the orion special was our favourite, would definitely recommend the cocktail and this hotel, had a lovely first holiday and will definitely be returning.

Returned last week, from a ten day stay at The Orion
we were dropped off opposite hotel not as one previous review said "miles away"
the rooms are immaculately cleaned daily, and everything worked, ie Fridge, hairdryer , air conditioning shower T.V etc.
Small safe in room which is an extra 15 euros, the beds very comfortable, a small balcony overlooking the pool/garden.modern contemporary pastel colours and adequate furniture.
the food was excellent qaulity varied and fresh with an excellent salad bar, yes the breakfasts were samey but that is Greek breakfasts.eggs honey cold meats cheeses toast and cakes.
all very fresh no "food left hanging around" as previously stated, and anything that was getting close to running out was replaced
within seconds, at peak times the restaurant was sometimes busy but you only had to wait minutes, for a table to be cleared and a clean tablecloth and cutlery to be set up. during which time you can help yourself to a drink, wine or beer.the staff were all extremely helpful. polite and amusing.and could not do enough to make your stay as good as possible.
the hotel is located in a central position, very close to all shops. bars restaurants etc, with a bus stop right outside, and for a few euros a twenty min journey into Rethymnon, well worthwhile with its excellent, little harbour, plenty of shops and some superb quayside fish restaurants.
we did several trips booked through the rep, The Jeep safari which was excellent, with a very knowledgable guide, and an excellent lunch.the Catamaran trip which is an absolute must
with a max of 20 people its like having your own private charter, we only had six on our trip again with an excellent luch and a very, hospitable funny and very helpful Skipper, the minoan magic was a lengthy coach trip . and although the guide was excellent it was hard going at some points and the trip to the Labyrinth although interesting went on a bit, but thats just me,
also booked from the car hire shop, a a very good value only 15 euros series of trips on a little yellow road train, which takes you high into the moutains at slow speeds. enabling you to take a good look , the guide stops and points out many points of interest. we went to the Monastry and would highly reccomend it
The hotel pool is very much big enough, and there are plenty of sunbeds but very limited parasols
which is not a problem as their are trees providing shady areas. so all in all I would highly reccomend the Orion. not least because of its small friendly nature, excellent staff and well situated. I can only think that the management has listened to previous criticisms, and remedied them.

Room Tip: pool / Garden view the best and the higher the floor the better view of the sea. music in bar stops...
