My fiance and I travelled to Rethymnon about a month ago and were so excited to stay at Veneto. Not realizing it was an hour from the airport and somewhat difficult to find (just make sure you look up where you're going before you try to find it), we ended up arriving around 1am, two hours after their allowed check-in time. I was so worried we were not going to be able to check in until the following morning, but were very pleasantly surprised and appreciative that the lady had waited for us. I was again pleasantly surprised when we were shown to the 'cave room', as I had requested. Was it perfectly lit, with an amazing shower and all the extras?!? No lol. Was it a once-in-a-lifetime incredible experience to stay in a cave room that survived WWII?!? Yes! The owner invited us to sit down with him in the bar area of the restaurant where he proceeded to serve us food, wine from his cellar and tell us all about how his hotel came to be. It was such a neat experience hearing his stories and gaining such a newfound respect for the place. You could tell he put so much pride and effort into getting his hotel to where it is now. We also ate at the restaurant, which was very good and 10% off. Also, the location, although a bit hard to find at first, was amazing!!! Right in the Old town of Rethymnon. I don't even know how to describe it?!? A bunch of cool little hole in the wall shops, restaurants, etc. on the water, with many great beaches around (if you have a car). I would definitely go back and stay here again!

We spent a week in a suite; the hotel is very well situated with rooms that were large and well proportioned and the bed was good. The hotel staff were very friendly when you could find them.
The main problem was the bathroom, which was small and not very well equipped. The shower was a bit old, fitted into the corner of the room and needed replacing. Impossible to get a stable water temperature, the water changed from hot to cold all the time.
In many other ways, little details showed that this was not really a four star hotel. There is WiFi in the restaurant but in the rooms you need ADSL, not much use if you have an Ipad, or similar device.
We had two small balconies but no chairs in the room so we could not use them, each balcony had three pots of dead plants and weeds, apparently the maid did not know that they needed watering. When we arrived we had a small bunch of fresh flowers in the room which was nice, two days later they were dead and three days after that they were finally removed.
The room seemed to be lit by 15 watt bulbs, so it was very dim and difficult to read in the evenings.
The overall impression was that the hotel needed some care and attention, and that it was considered less important than the restaurant. As all the morning staff are young girls, don’t expect any help getting your bags down all the stairs when you leave.

Everything that other reviewers have said are spot on . The 400 year old part of the building and the open air restaurant are enchanting . We arrived at night about 9pm and they were waiting for us and carried our suitcases up the stairs . Made us feel most welcome . As another reviewer said you drag your wheelie case down the cobled streets of the old town and I wondered where the hell are we going . It is all worth it . The old town in Rethymnon is just charming !! There are a good choice of restaurants and places to eat nearby but the Veneto Restaurant is up there with the best . Look out for the beautiful stone mosaic in the floor.

Room Tip: It is an old building but we had a suite the first night and the second night a standard . Both comfortable . The standard room overlooked the outside restaurant .

We enjoyed our staying in this cozy hotel in the old city as much as our whole vacations in Rethymno. The felling you get from this exceptional building along with the ideal temperature is so relaxing and refreshing. Perfect place to fill your batteries after every day's trips and walks. Excellent restaurant and wine cellar.

I have been raving about my three-night stay at the Veneto ever since I checked out. This was quite possibly the most unique, romantic and well situated hotel (and restaurant!) in which I have ever had the pleasure of staying. Once you actually find the place which is located on a short pedestrian "street" in the heart of the very maze-like Old Town area, you are greeted by very friendly and welcoming staff not to mention the foyer of a beautifully decorated and restored 800-year old monastery-turned-inn. After checking into our room which was actually a loft style with the bed located on a second level accessibly by a spiral staircase, we were welcomed graciously by Yannis, who I believe to be the owner, and introduced to the beverage, raki, which is Crete's tastier answer to Ouzo. Wow! What a start to a fantastic stay. We next settled down in the small Venetian-style courtyard for an amazing and relaxing dinner before setting out on a walk about the streets of Old Town. It doesn't sound or feel like it, but you are in the center of all the nighttime cafe action as well as what seems like around the clock shopping. Of all the places I stayed on my 3-week trip, the Veneto was easily the most quiet and comfortable and accommodating. I believe there are only 12 rooms, so if you're looking to be in the center of Old Town, book your room right away! You won't be disappointed!
