It's a nice small boutique hotel right in the middle of town. The rooms are all different - not surprising in a building several hundred years old. It has character and is a great place to stay for a few days. We had come from a similar hotel in Chania and if you have to choose one town or another we would go for Chania every time. The staff are polite and unobtrusive. Breakfast is included and is OK but not as impressive as the restaurant downstairs which is spectacularly pretty and seems to be one of the best 2 or 3 in town. Check out the 70+ year old filo pastry baker round the corner. Overall it's a good place to stay with no negatives - but the top 20 in Crete rating has to be very surprising. Top 100 maybe...

If you are after the classic hotel on a beach holiday with a buffet menu...this is not your hotel..

Our stay in Veneto brought us closer to the cretan experience we were after. The building, situated in the old town of Rethimno, is more than 700 years, renovated to maintain all the original features is one of the most beautiful and romantic buildings we have ever stayed in. With water fountains in its courtyard and welcoming but not OTT staff you are made to feel welcome and almost at home instantly.

Stepping out of the hotel within minutes walk you can discover little cobble stone streets with small restaurants scattered everywhere where the locals enjoy their meze and raki, vibrant bars and surprisingly nice clothes and jewlery boutiques for afternoon strolls.

From Rethimno we took a number of day trips to the south coast, which is only 45 minutes away and the drive is very scenic. We could park our car a 5 minutes walk from Veneto, so staying in the middle of the old town was not a problem at all.

If you stay in Veneto, one thing you have to do is try the restaurant. Apparently all food ingredients are sourced locally. The food was cooked to perfection and if you know your wines, you wont be disappointed as Veneto has its own wine cellar and one of the best wine lists we have seen.

Leaving Veneto, felt like leaving a family home behind and we will definitely be going back!

The Veneto is wonderful, historical property. The walls and floors date to the Venetian era, and the family has kept much of the original charm. The location in the Old Town is very good, offering easy access to tavernas and shopping. The staff is very accommodating and helpful. The restaurant offers very high quality Cretan cuisine, and has seating both inside and outside. The breakfast buffet includes many baked items, yogurt, fruit, boiled eggs; and guests enjoy breakfast in the outdoor dining area in the quiet courtyard filled with beautiful flowering plants and interesting architectural features.

The only negative was music from a nearby club that could be heard on the weekend from the exterior room one of our party occupied. The interior room was much quieter. The hotel is very nice, though, and I would suggest ear plugs rather than choosing another property.

Veneto Hotel is very special! A venetian mansion built in the 1400s, this property has been beautifully restored! Our suite was extremely spacious and comfortable, the restaurant, bar, and courtyard areas were all so beautiful, and the staff was very friendly! We liked the hotel so much that we spent all night talking to the bar tender and receptionist, sampling wines from the impressive wine cellar, and we had the pleasure of meeting the owner as well! Fred and Katrina were such nice and interesting people, we did not want to leave after only one night! Breakfast in the courtyard was great, and the location in the center of Rethymno's Old Town was perfect! This town was incredibly charming, we definitely wished we had more time to take it in.
Our only disappointment was that the renowned Veneto restaurant was not open for the season yet...we missed it by about one week...I guess we will have to plan a trip back to try it! We would most definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Rethymno, but make sure you stay longer than 1 night! We certainly hope to be back one day.
