We stopped here on our final night in Rethimon after never failing to have an awesome meal. The restaurant is very inviting. It looks great and the food brought out looks amazing. However I have to echo the opinions of others below and say that the service is extremely slow. Not UK slow. Crete slow. It took forever just to be given a menu. As for the bill... we had to ask 3 different people for it and one of them twice. We heard the table next to us complaining of a similar experience and another table looking really fed up as they waited even longer than us for the menu. The serving staff were pleasant enough but just seemed rather absent. I wondered whether they were short staffed in the kitchen and they perhaps had to prepare food too.

That alone would not be enough for me to leave a bad review if the food was good, however we were also disappointed with that too. It was obviously prepared with fresh ingredients and done with some care, however I think the chef had a very different palate to us. It felt like he/she was trying to be too clever with it. Our beetroot salad was overly rich and creamy. The fava beans dip had what tasted like gherkins or capers mixed in which gave it an odd taste. The (admittedly cheap) wine tasted like gooseburies and didn't improve with time. The bread was dry by the time they finally brought us the dip we ordered. The patty things we ordered however were nice. Result!

Of course we only tried a small section of the menu and some people might have enjoyed what we ordered, but for us we were disappointed and this was compounded by the very poor service.

This place has bags of potential but if our experience of tonight is the norm, I'd go someplace else as there are loads of fantastic restaurants nearby.

We popped into Raki Ba Raki for a very quick, shared cold lunch of crab salad with dill, and roast peppers. This was so lovely that we revisited for dinner a few nights later and thoroughly enjoyed a lamb casserole and chicken with lemon and honey. We enjoyed the decor as it reminded of us of a friend's similarly retro restaurant in Edinburgh called Spoon. The service was friendly and when I used Google Translate to deliver compliments to the chef he came across and, looking delighted, shook our hands.

I notice another reviewer was unhappy about the speed of service, plate clearing etc. My own 3-week experience in Crete is of a slower tempo than, say, UK. This has its nice spin-offs. You don't feel pressure to leave just because you've finished your meal or drink and, in places offering wifi for holiday makers to book accommodation, keep in touch with home etc. this is a welcome touch.

I will return here some day.

We also noticed that Raki Ba Raki doubles as a deli/takeaway which many of the Rethymno old town traders must love.

This taverna is one of the best I've ever experienced in Crete. The menu is not long, but well and with thought put together. Don't let it fool you - it's a simple paper version. I still miss the cheese saganaki with fig jam - salty and sweet together, and delicious! The Avli restaurant in the corner is part of the same enterprise, a bit more expensive being a restaurant, and not a taverna. But do try the taverna on the alley first, it's well worth it! The two of us spent about 30 euros total, with half a litre of house wine.
