lovely hotel, some 100 m from the gate that you enter charming old town... from rethymnon you could visit santorini, as well as many attractions of the island of crete... if you prefer lazy vacations, there is a long, crowdy, sandy beach with planty of pubs and restaurants... it is always sunny with pleasant meltemi wind. back to the hotel... food could be better and fresher. stuff is great... quiet and clean place.

This hotel is in a good location near the old town. We requested room 502 which is a family room with two balconies and a very large separate bedroom which was great. The food was ok although there are so many nice places to eat we decided to dine out most nights. The staff were excellent, polite helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Overall a very good budget hotel.

Hotel was in good place, from 10 minutes from beach. Use a"wild" beach near the city, there is not wind and waves:-). The pool on the top of hotel was very good, especially in the mornings.
In reception was very friendly staff. Thank you!

We stayed at Jo An Palace for 2 weeks in September having stayed at hotel Brascos during our previous visit to rethymnon. The hotel is very clean and of a good standard. Decent sized rooms and cleaned well every day. Request a room with a town view though as otherwise you will end up with the view of a dirty wall which we did, but we are generally easy going so didn't bother us as much as it would some. Pool is on the roof and lovely it gets the sun all day and is mostly quiet. Breakfast fine, lots of choice. Staff friendly and helpful. Our air con unit broke in the second week and after technical support didn't manage to fix it they moved us with no issue to another room with a working unit. Great location in walking distance to the beach and the old town. Only downside being the web site advertises a pool bar and there is not one at all and also the hotel bar itself shuts at 11pm so no nightcap if you stay out that little bit later. If you are looking for a nice late night drink head to Brascos hotel across the way from jo an it has a gorgeous roof bar with amazing views and breezes and is open until 1am. We would definitely stay there again but would request a better balcony view now we know what our one was like! all in all excellent value for money and a good experience. The worst thing was where our balcony was attracted a lot of pigeons and there was a lot of mess - the cleaners successfully cleaned the balcony floors etc but the window frame was absolutely filthy with it which was quite off putting.

Stayed at this hotel for 10 days with a friend. It was better than i expected. The hotel were very obliging and had given us room 502 which I requested because another trip advisor reviewer had recommended it. This room was fab for us - a bedroom and a lounge with 2 balconies - one which had a great partial sea view ( across the old town and municipal park). The furniture and decor were a bit dated - but this is a great value hotel so there has to be some compromise( in addition to the breakfast!). We were very happy with the pool - its was big enough and bigger than many in the little hotels in the old town.

The location - just a couple of minutes walk into the old town - very good really - 10/15 minutes walk to the beach.

We went into some lovely restuarants in the old town, some great tips - walking and a cycling tour which was wonderful.

I would stay here again if i needed a budget hotel.
xx

Photos and reviews for these 2 hotels are muddled up throughout. In general it looks like Joan Palace is much better reviewed but llisted under Hotel marmara rethymno palace which has higher rating due to these reviews intended for Joan palace.Even exterior of pic is of Joan palace - which has official 4* not 2* rating. If beach is mentioned - refers usually to sister hotel.

Joan Palace is a pleasant family run town centre hotel. Mixed reviews made me apprehensive but everything was fine for our stay including attentive HB dinner service for just the two of us, Staff very helpful. Central location - not ideal for beach lovers but very convenient for bus station, old town, fortezza and port. No hesitation in recommending this hotel in any respect. TV did offer BBC world news and most movies are in English with greek subtitles.

Room Tip: Some traffic street noise with outer rooms - if you want quieter rooms request inner facing. From w...

After booking 2 weeks, half board, in this hotel in September and then reading the reviews we arrived here with some trepidation. Completely unfounded. First of all our reception at the hotel and our interaction with the staff was excellent, they were so helpful and much more than friendly. Our room was very good, spacious with a comfortable bed and an adequate bathroom and toilet rather than the 'cupboard' with scarcely room for to swing a cat as the reviews led us to believe, there was plenty of room. If you book to stay in an hotel in a city you should expect there to be street noise so why do people complain about it? Sitting out on our balcony overlooking the main street even into the small hours, relaxing and having a drink after a busy day was fascinating, watching from above the world go by : if you go to bed at 20:00 or 21:00 hours why would you bother to go on holiday at all? The rooms to the rear of the hotel, I must say, overlook rather tacky buildings and may have contributed to some less than appreciative reviews. We are pensioners and the distance to the beach was a bit too far to traipse there every day the roof top pool and sunbathing area was ideal and surprisingly nearly always deserted so we availed ourselves of it, often exclusively, most of the time. The clientele was mostly, Eastern European; guests from Russia, other former Soviet Republics and Poland and this was reflected in the cuisine. The meals were self service and judging by the reaction of the other guests, I would say that they seemed to enjoy what they were eating both at breakfast and dinner. As for me it was a bit like the curate's egg, good in parts. We had many meals over the fortnight which we really enjoyed, the odd menu was not quite to our liking but none was unpalatable: we appreciated that we were not the only nationality in this hotel and understood that we would not be specifically catered for. Rethymno is a lovely, working city and the hotel was a stone's throw from the old town which was a labyrinth of narrow, vibrant streets full of shops, bars and restaurants leading down to the harbour and the esplanade along the water's edge. I would certainly return to this hotel and recommend it and the city of Rethymno.`

Room Tip: When booking ask for a room facing on to the main street, lower floor rooms at the back don't ha...
