Two minutes walk to the old city as well as to the beach, spotless rooms (newly renovated on the third floor), helpful reception and ok breakfast enjoyed in a charming backyard. Fantastic view from the pool/sunterasse. The only thing we missed these three days was a a way to enjoy a coffee at the balcony.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the backyard

I stayed here during the off-season for business. The staff and management were very accommodating to help make my stay comfortable. It was a good choice for many reasons (location, quality of rooms, etc.), but the staff, in my opinion, made the biggest difference.

It is a great place to stay if you want to be close to everything. The hotel staff were really friendly and helpful. The rooms were just like in the pictures, though we regret not asking for a room facing the gardens. It was quite loud in the nights and then the window had to be closed and air conditioning on, which was not preferable.
The hotel offers a great breakfast buffet with a lot of different kinds of food and fruits. We really enjoyed it.
The roof garden with swimming pool area is a great addition to the hotel, though we did find the bartender a bit overstressed and overattentive. It was not allowed for us to move our sunbeds for a few minutes to the shadow for example, which would, according to him, make it difficult for people to walk towards the bar. It was still a lot of space behind the chairs and there were really not many people visiting the bar before noon, so we felt that this was unnecessary of him. On the other hand, he did differentiate between the customers and did not react to the older couple taking many splashing dives into the swimming pool, even though there is a sign saying diving is not allowed. In addition, the same couple was allowed to move their chairs to the shadow area, even though they were even closer to the bar. Where is the logic?

Room Tip: Try to get the room facing the garden, if you need your quality sleep!

My fiancee and I recently concluded a relaxing 12-day sojurn in Crete, 2 of which were spent in Chania, the rest in Rethymnon at the Achillion Palace.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Rethymnon, or indeed Crete, I unreservedly encourage you to make a reservation!

Why?

1. Location: the hotel is on a fairly quiet street two blocks from the ocean. This was great for quick morning and afternoon swims. The hotel is a two minute walk to the main square and then onto the old town and main promenade in front of the water. There is a well-stocked Inka Supermarket a few minutes walk away. The bus station is walkable (15 minutes approx.) but probably not with luggage. I agreed upon a Eur 5 fare to the bus station with the taxi driver.

2. Amenitities: the Achillion is a nicely appointed, older (I think 30 years) establishment, with an elegant reception area (marble floor, leather couches, bar), a nice rooftop pool with a view of the Aegean and the hills, clean, functional, and cozy rooms with balconies on which to enjoy a quiet evening drink or take-out meal. A full, and very good, breakfast is included (not a cake and juice affair like in Italy), but eggs, sausauge/bacon, luncheon meats, cheese, rolls, and Cretan foods. Greek yoghurt drizzled in honey and a strong coffee made for a great start to my day, particularly when sitting in the lush courtyard.

The staff take pride in their establishment and it shows.

3. Value for money: we stayed in early June and paid Eur 53/night, which I thought was reasonable, considering the factors I listed above.

Thanassis, Kostas, and the rest of the guys at the Achillion run a very good establishment, embody good Cretan hospitality, and were a delight to talk to during our stay. One of my fondest memories of Achillion was sitting at the bar one evening enjoying a good glass of raki.

If you go, tell them that Dave from Canada sent you!

Other notes:

For an affordable break from dining out, there is a good pizza place run by a nice husband, wife, and daughter (Fournaki Pizzeria) a few blocks down towards the water, and a good Gyro place aroud the corner from it, right on the corner of the main drag (turn left from the hotel, then second left towards the water, past the wedding planning shop). They both make for a cheap take-out meal on the balcony, best accompanied with a chilled bottle of "Dream" semi-sweet white wine (Eur 4,20 available at Inka).

The restaurants in the old town are generally a racket. Look for quieter ones closer to the fortezza and off the main drag, which are cheaper and better. There is a string of restaurants on the road to the fortezza overlooking the water which are nice options.

Rethymnon is a better base than Chania for a Cretan holiday. More to see and do, much better and easier-to-reach beaches, bigger old town to explore, and ferry access to other islands. Only downside is no airport, but the bus to Heraklion or Chania is easy enough.

Hotel guests were from across Europe, mostly Scandinavia, with a few Italians and Russians.

You can control the air conditioner in your room, but I suggest turning it off, closing the drapes when you're gone during the day, and opening the sliding doors to let in a nice breeze.

If you like watching TV on vacation: there is 1 English station (BBC), 1 German, 2 French, and about 20 Greek.

The rooms have bar fridges to store your drinks and such.

Room Tip: Facing the courtyard.

My fiancé and I have just returned from a fantastic holiday in rethymnon staying at the achillion palace. The reception, garden and breakfast areas are spacious and nicely decorated. The Pool area and bar is awesome on the rooftop with outstanding views of the sea, harbour and old town. There is a good range on the menu and you are very well looked after by the bartender who is very polite and friendly. The rooms and balcony are well equipped with storage, air con, TV, comfy beds and nice bathroom. Breakfast is varied and fresh for lots of different tastes and very tasty. The best thing about the hotel though is definitely the staff. From the moment you walk through the door to the sad time you leave you are cared for, looked after, helped and greeted by the reception staff, manager, waiter, bar man and cleaners. The staff really do have a great balance of being there when you need them to but aren't overpowering or in your face. They really are fantastic and could not ask for nicer people to make your stay any more enjoyable. Every single member is a credit to the hotel. We are already thinking about returning to this really lovely place!
