Great value and I will return. I find it hard that someone would pay bargain rates for a hotel as nice as Hotel Brascos and then complain afterward. It's not 5 star but neither are the prices!

Room was more than adequate. Very comfortable with everything we needed. Wi-fi would've been a nice touch, but the internet cafe 30 m away was fine, and anyway, how nice to be weaned away from techo addictions and to stay away from e-mail for a week.

Staff couldn't have been nicer. Breakfast was certainly adequate and enough to start the day off. Lift worked perfectly.

I found NO prejudice again Brits or anyone else, as one person claimed. I'm American but my travel companion is a Brit. We came from London to Rethymnon. there were a number of Brits there and all quite happy, if not VERY happy.

I found the staff to be as warm and hospitable as one could hope for. Lots of effort to make the stay enjoyable with pointers about food, Cretan dishes, where to go out for dinner, etc. Excellent suggestions by the way!

Great value, as good as I've found anywhere in years of traveling the world!

Stayed at the brascos for seven days, Hotel was clean and the staff was good.
We was on half board big mistake Dinner was allways over cooked and not that much choice, Breakfast was very std for Europe.
Typical Dinner Soup like dish water, two or three main dishes and salad one dessert or a fruit.
Drinks, small beer 33cl, 2.80 euro Tea 2.00 euro
We was on the 2nd floor facing the main road very noisey at night the local youths screeming the moterbikes up the road every night, A nice city to look around but very busy on the roads take your own life to cross them even on the zebras.
Parking was hard to find for free there was a car park at the side but expensive

Rooms need a lick of paint ours was a dirty pink and in poor condition, the shower was a joke.

This was our cheapest hotel in years - couldn't believe what we got for our money frankly. We were here for 14 nights.

We were lucky to get a room with balcony opposite the Basketball court. Try to request a room that side as the sun comes round about 3.30 pm so when you are exhausted walking and shopping, nice to sit on the balcony with a British newspaper and a (cheap) raki or wine and relax still in the sun. OK, it can be a bit noisy at times with the enthusiasrm of the players and coach, but it's nothing serious.

The rooms are basic, but absolutely fine and always clean - after all, a room is a base to work from - and our one was perfectly adequate for relaxing as well. However.......be prepared for the shower cubicle!!!! It gave us loads of laughs but was the only real blot on the landscape. It is positively tiny and anyone of a fair size will have problems.

There is a very bare, minimal short curtain which goes around from wall to wall, and the shower tray is approximately no more than 2ft x 2 ft. Every time I'd try to get the wet curtain stuck to the tiles at one side, then pull it around and stick it to the other tiled wall. So far so good. Turn on the shower and as soon as I started to wash, my wet rear would stick to the curtain and inadvertantly pull it around, so the shower consequently soaked the floor!!! We had contests every day to see if either of us could come out of the shower without a flooded floor - neither of us ever won!

The staff are lovely and can't do enough. Helena in the bar on the 6th floor is just super and she used to come and have a chat with us on a quiet night. She is Greek but spent two years in Canada so speaks English with a Canadian accent - but wait until you hear her babbling on in Greek - very confusing!!

The Continental breakfast is absolutely adequate. Fresh, crusty bread to die for - and little crispbreads for the weight conscious. Three cereals (UHT milk though - ugh!) Unlimited lovely coffee and tea, cold meats, cheeses, yoghourts, sauces, jams, HB eggs, fruit both tinned and fresh. What else do you need and you can have as much as you want - and more!

We tried dinner a couple of times - only 8 Euros - although there's a selection it was pretty poor and we were glad we hadn't booked for full board. It was just convenient a couple of nights when we were too tired to go anywhere else.

The hotel is PERFECTLY situated for access to most places. The old town is 5 minutes walk away - and you're right in the thick of it. The bus station is 10 minutes up the other way with options for many different jaunts. We went to Chania, Heraklion and further on to Hersonissos where we'd stayed a couple of years ago. We arranged visits to some of the little villages through the tour companies and they didn't cost much.

As usual on this island, very few Brits in the hotel (if at all) and mostly Germans, some of whom were not too friendly. 'Nuff said about that!

The pool is a bit of a joke though. Not child friendly so don't plan accordingly. I did see some folks using it, but it is as if they had a space left and decided to put a small pool in to fill up the space. It is also pretty deep.....a few sunbeds to use but we rarely found anyone taking advantage of them.

Rethymnon is a huge city - far bigger than we expected. We were a bit concerned that it might be a bit small compared to Hersonissos - it dwarfed it! The beach is about 15 minutes away certainly, but if you don't fancy that, the beach walk itself is really nice. We did it several days - 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' comes to mind right enough, but there are countless tavernas and restaurants on the other side which helped us keep going with the regular hourly beer!

There is another walk - up to the Venetian Fort - which is so interesting and gives absolutely stunning views east and west of the coastline. No wonder it was built on that rock - how clever of them!

There are countless restaurants, particularly in the old town and along the beach. We particularly liked the Apollo at the start of the Old Town. The waiters are comical - and the boss always says 'Merry Christmas' to everyone from UK. The food is wonderful and they give quite a few little extras. Mind you, most of the restaurants preceed the meal with tasty nibbles anyway and often there is a surprise mini dessert and a shot of Raki free gratis. Be prepared for massive portions though......in a restaurant on the coast walk coming from the Fort, my OH ordered a pork chop. The actual measurement was 15 x 8 x 2 inches. Hanging over the plate it was......that's just an example of Cretan hospitality. Another time, he took a swordfish steak - feed a family it would! And make no mistake - the prices were cheap, cheap cheap!

Not much more to say really - think everything is covered. The hotel is absolutely fine. Will not give it a star rating as you have to remember you are on a Greek Island where you cannot flush the loo paper away but just use the bin. So what - it becomes a way of life and we found it odd to revert to British plumbing again. I'd not run the hotel down at all. Compare it to those of the USA and you'd give it one star. I'm a realist who totally enjoyed my visit to the Brascos, Rethymnon and my entire holiday. I have tried to make this comprehensive pointing out the pluses and the minuses so you can make up your own minds. I recommend going for it - nowt to lose, except to experience a wet bathroom floor!!!

Oh - no internet access but there are loads of places where this is possible, in fact there's one 2 minutes away.

Me, my girlfriend, her mother and her boyfriend arrived at the Brascos hotel the 6th of August at the evening. We had ask for adjoining rooms, balcony and double beds. We got 1 room on the second floor with a balcony but no double bed. and one room at third floor, with no balcony, no double bed and the rooms was not at all near each other. The room on the third floor was like a cell, no sunlight, and very small room. We ask the reception to fill our needs, after all we booked the hotel i early spring. But they could not do anything before the next day. So we slept in the cell, and got up as early as we could, and got a new room at the fourth floor in the afternoon, with a balcony and with double beds, but still not adjoined. But is was okay.. After that episode, the hotel was generally ok; the breakfast was good, with nutella, jam, 2 kinds of bread, yoghurt, fruit, cereal, 2 kinds of juice, coffee and so on. But the variety they described in the buffet did not exist. But everything was fresh!
The rooms are generally small, and if you get a cell the hotel is only worth 1 star. But if you get a room with a balcony, 2 stars is ok. And some of the rooms are very loud because of the heavy traffic. But 3 stars is one too many all 4 of us think. But if you are looking for an ok cheap hotel centered VERY near the old town, where all the night life is, and 10 minutes walk to the beach this is the one for you. And the staff is nice too.

But do not get to scared of this, the hotel is fine. Just a bit overrated :-)

And we would recommend it, but you have to know the terms!

p.s. The pool is very small to, but nobody is using it, so we had our own private pool, and then it is ok big :-)

p.s.s. There is tabletennis, if the table havent broke yet ;-)

We have just got back from staying a week in this hotel.
Do not be put off by the remarks that people have made about it.
The breakfast was brilliant, so much choice, it was buffet style and you could have what ever you wanted.
We had a room opposite basket ball or netball ground, ok a bit noisey but it didn't go all night long, it was lovely to watch the kids play and it kept them off the street.
A very clean hotel, with friendly staff all though, ok not many English there but hey oh you are in a foreign country I wasn't bothered about that we just did our own thing.
A lovely roof top where you could have a drink lovely lady serving you.
I would go back to this hotel near old town and bus station, please email me if you want to ask anything.

Brascos Hotel in Rethymnon is well located if you'd rather stay near the beautiful old town and all the hustle and bustle but that's where all the good things about this hotel end.

IT IS NOT A 3 STAR HOTEL! Not by any standards. I was very disappointed when I discovered (I arrived at the venue at 4am and was desperate for a long bath) that there was no bath and the shower was tiny and really awkward in use. The furniture was ugly and very basic. Another source of disappointment was the food - the most basic breakfast you can imagine. When I asked for some tomato, the waiter simply said they didn't have any and so I had my pathetic piece of bread with feta cheese, a slice of cheap, synthetic cheese and an olive.

I didn't dare to try the pool, but the roof garden was quite OK. They do 50% off between 9 and 10pm and the barmaid was great.

My advice - DO NOT STAY AT BRASCOS unless you want to feel disappointed!

We had a very pleasant stay at the Brascos. Clean and pleasant. Helpful staff. Room was on the small side, but it was big enough. We had a 5th floor room with nice view overlooking the city. Would recommend that you request a higher room as there is a lot of street noise in Rethymnon well into the night. Small cafe on the 1st floor is convenient. Continental breakfast was quite good. Overall this is a very good hotel and outstanding value for the cost.
