Another wonderful holiday had at the Aristea Hotel and Apartments in Missiria, Rethymnon. This was our second stay, in one of the deluxe apartments in the new block, which are just across the road from the main building. These one bedroom apartments are more spacious and a bit more comfortable than those in the main building, and designed to accommodate three guests. The living area consists of kitchen with full cooker and fridge/freezer, dining table for four and bed/settee, which is more comfy to sit on than most we have come across in Crete, although only being two of us, never actually slept on - apart from the odd afternoon siesta! Crockery and utensils are basic, and if you want a kettle I would suggest bringing your own. One did turn up in our apartment after a few days, but I wouldn't say it was standard - that's typically Greek. On the plus side there is a decent shower curtain and the bathroom is not flooded every time you have a shower, which is not typically Greek! There is ample storage space and sensibly place electric sockets. The Wi-Fi is now good too (there were problems on our first visit). TV reception in this block is not good though and all satellite channels available lean heavily toward Arabic and Eastern European, so if you fancy the odd spell watching a bit of TV, there's not much choice. We were there during the beginning of World Cup and would have been good to catch some of that before heading out for dinner. The apartments overlook a central square, which leads straight onto the beach, so no roads to cross. The square is used by local children and parents each evening, dog walkers and friendly gatherings, as well as a car park - but not busy or intrusive. I found it interesting - people watching. Yes, the bins are right outside and they attract cats, and they are emptied every morning, very early and quite noisily, but after a day or so you get used to it, and don't hear it any more. There is air conditioning, so windows can be closed with the air con on to keep cool and any noise out.

I would ask for an upper floor apartment though as those on the ground floor are slightly below ground level and cats will frequent the balcony. Not entirely their fault as we witnessed them being fed by people in those apartments, so the cats now think this is a good place for food. Plus, the views are obscured by plants. The upper floors have great views of the square and the beach and sea beyond.

The pool is across the road in the main building, which is ample size for the number of people using the apartments. We never found it too busy with no beds available. There is a small toddlers pool and showers poolside. Food and drink are available close by the pool or inside just beyond the reception area, which is available all day.

There are ample restaurants and shops within walking distance. The taxi rank is only a short walk around the corner where you can take a cab into town or into Platanes for around 6Euro. The walk into Rethymnon town is a pleasant 40 minute very slow stroll along the promenade.

Above all, the team at Aristea are wonderfully welcoming and most helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. They are there if you want them, but not intrusive if you don't. Any problems or queries are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

This won't be our last visit to Aristea and I would highly recommend them to anyone wishing to holiday in Rethymnon. You'll have to book direct if travelling from the UK though, as they are not available with any UK holiday company. Not a bad thing in my opinion.

Room Tip: Upper floors give better views. Try to get the deluxe apartments if you can.

We really enjoy staying here.Very friendly,hospitable and good service. Good location for sightseeing and the old town og Rethymnon.
Sadly, there was building noise going on. But it didn't bother us..

Beautiful location, wonderful and sweet staff, nice pool, cool and airy rooms... I would definitely recommend this hotel! me and my family stayed here for one week, it was our first holiday as a family and my daughter loved it! A few metres from the beach, a little service store just around the corner and a very nice bakery up on the big street!

Enjoyed very much my one week stay in Aristea in august 2013. It's a cozy and clean little hotel with very laid back atmosphere, thanks to Christina, Vivi and Olga. They take perfect care of every quest. They are the heart of Aristea!!! Thank you so much. Location of Aristea is perfect if you appreciate being near the beach (2 mins walk) and you want to sleep well. The surrounding area of the hotel is very quite but there are some decent restaurants within a close proximity and local business (bakery, mini market). For shopping, bars and night life or sights, just take the local bus to the old town (bus stop approx 200 m from Aristea, fare 1 €) or taxi 6 €. If you want to exersize a bit, it's about 4 km walk to old town.

We (2 adults and baby of 19 mo) stayed 15 days in Aristea "new wing" - separate block across 110 Martiron St. The apartment on the 1st floor was OK - spacious double-room with full kitchen, we had to add teakettle (fortunately, coffee machine was there), salad bowl, hand juicer and little plain knife only. Hotel staff was excellent, friendly and helping. Plenty of taverns and supermarkets were at walking distance.
Daily cleaning was acceptable except in bathroom - we had to wash the (half-size) bathtub with sponge and antibacterial soap on arrival and further on. We did not claim to reception for this trifle though - cleaning in 2*-3* is never perfect.
Balcony with sea view was good for breakfast and tea time. Beach was in just 70 m with modest children playground in between. Beach was OK though littered a little.
But - sad things about the area:
- 6 (5 - always opened) garbage tanks dwelled with cats were just 10 m from block entrance adding no charm to the view, but worse was their servicing by noisy garbage lorries at 6:30 am and 7:00 am every day;
- the lane under our balcony led to IIlion Beach Hotel and was busy with mopeds, motorbikes and cars early morning to late evening;
- the square with War Monument in front of the block was a place for locals to loudly socialize till midnight;
- two dogs in neighboring yard were eager to bark day and night that was very well heard in the apartment;
- the point of street between two Aristea buildings was a regular place for lorries supplying goods to nearby hotels and supermarket to be unloaded in the morning by stinky diesel fork lift.
We have to put "poor" mark to sleeping quality without any hotel fault but sleeping was really poor because of area drawbacks - unless we closed windows.
It's a pity but we will not return to this really good hotel because of above said area problems. Accordingly, we cannot recommend this hotel (at least the new block) for families wishing a quiet stay.

Can only agree with all other positive reviews. Nice clean large room (room 216) - location ok.
Shopping (baker-supermarked) just up the road, and a small "Family market" just opposite the hotel.
A lot of restaurants (1+1, Mio Gusto and Tropical were our favourites)
If we ever come back to Rethymnon, Crete, we will choose this hotel.

Room Tip: We would choose room 216 - due to 2 balconies, and therefore drafts, we didn't need the air-con...
