Rethymno Bay Hotel
Ranked #142 of 175 Hotels in Rethymnon
Reviewed 21 September 2007

We have just returned from Rethymno Bay Hotel after a two week stay. Be prepared for some surprises there! First of all, if you arrive in the evening, do not expect normal dinner. A plate with some cold food will be delivered to your room with scarsely any food at all which is not fair because you paid for a normal meal.
Breakfasts are very monotonous, same stuff every day with extra surprises like old, mouldy sausages or simply products disapearing during breakfast and never being replaced. If you come 30-40 minutes before the end of the meal, you must be prepared for a very limited choice. Besides they switch a/c off , so it is very hot in the dining area.
Dinners are a little better but nothing special. Same salads repeated every day, warm dishes are not that warm because the owners make savings by switching the food heaters off. Practically no desserts. You are given an apple, an orange or some grapes. Twice during our stay we had a water melon!!!
Rooms are rather small, cleaned every day except Sundays. The cleaning ladies are very nice and friendly. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are tragic! Old and with hardly any light inside. They need instant renovation.
The swimming-pool is big and very deep with only a very small fragment with shallow water which is ok when you are a good swimmer. Families with kids or poorer swimmers are disapointed because you have no place to practise your swimming (the shallow water area is very crowded).
The beach is sandy but it is an open sea beach. You must be prepared for waves which are quite often very big. Besides when you enter the sea there are a lot of small but sharp stones. We suggest buying special "sea shoes"- which is an extra cost of 7.5 EURO for one pair for an adult. You also pay for the umbrella and two sunbeds (6EURO per day). If you come after 2 pm.they usually do not bother to collect money from you. If you come earlier you have to pay of course or you can buy drinks in the same price which is an option.
The reception stuff is very formal and stiff. "Do your business and go away " type of people. Besides you have to wait for quite some time before the receptionists stop talking and gossiping with friends(over the phone) and attend the hotel quests. The average waiting time is 5-10 minutes!
The phones in the hotel were not working. We kept asking everyday and were told about some problems but nothing was done about it during our 2 week stay. So, be prepared and do not take your laptop with you as there is no way of connecting it to the phone.
There is one computer available with internet access. The price is quite shocking -3 EURO no matter if you spend 5 minutes or 1 hour there. We can recommend an Internet cafe next to the hotel with a much better price ( 1EURO for half an hour).
Generally speaking, Rethymno Bay Hotel is definately not a 4 star hotel as they describe it in the brochures and inside the rooms there. We think that it is a max.3 star place with a lot to be improved. It's best advantage is the location ( next to the beach) and near the sea promenade. It is a hotel for not very demanding quests, mainly interested in visiting the island by car.The city of Rethymno is within a walking distance of 2 km. We recommend visiting it and especially the Old Town with it's lovely small streets, lots of shops, restaurants and cafes.

Stayed in this hotel in August 2006.
Location: the location of the hotel is much better than the most of the hotels on the beach. There is a long beach road which starts in Rethymno and ends just before the hotel territory, so you do not have to cross the road when you walk to the beach. You have to walk about 30 minutes to reach the city centre. To the north and east is the hotel territory with bar and pool, in the west is the quiet street, and on the south is the hotel garden and in about 30 meters some private territory (where a damned rooster screamed early in the morning, which woke us up the whole first night, but the other nights we got used to this sound and didn't care about it).
The rooms: hotel rooms have sea view and garden view, however, sea view is much worse than garden, because it is spoit by some construction yard in front of the hotel, however, it produces no sounds (the view on the picture is awful, but it is really not so bad =) maybe it is already finished now). Actually, there are only 2 or 3 rooms which have a fair sea view. Rooms are tidy and comfortable.
The pool: is closed at 19pm. Not overcrowded.
The beach: chairs and umbrellas are free, if you buy some drink in the beach bar (sometimes they even do not check if you bought something). You have to book the chair before the breakfast, if you want to lay closer to the sea. Hte beach is tidy and the sea too. However, after the 2-day storm the sea was a little bit dirty.
The food: good, but it get a little bit monotonous after 3 or 4 days staying there.
The town: Rethymno is a lovely town, with plenty of narrow streets and a historical fortress. Around the hotel are many of tavernas.
Most of the tourists in this hotel are Russian people, also there were some Europeans.
Notwithstanding the fact that the hotel has some disadvantages, we think it is the best choice, because the hotel territory is attached directly to the beach and is very private.

It seems to me that this hotel was good severak years ago. It is situated near the beach. It has a very good swimming pool. But it seems to me that the owner of the hotel lost all his money :-) and forget about it.
The food in the hotel is horrible. Forget about continental breacfast all you get is one type of hot meal in the morning (no scrambling eggs, no beans, actually they are presented but only one meal a day. For example only scrabled egg today, or only baked beans tomorrow).
The dinner is better. But the food in not good. If you ever been in Spain, or on Cyprus, or somethere else :-) you'll understand me. We managed to take dinner only twise. After that we've go to the nearest restoraunts and eat the food there.
The room is clean but rather small. There is no hot watter till 3 to 5 pm. I think it is uncomfortable too.
So my opinnion is that this hotel should be rated as 2 stars. In that case all the described above is normal.

I was at Rethymno hotel at the first decade of september 2005. Hotel is pretty good and it is on good location vich means near beach and 2km from the center of wonderful small town - Rethymno. My opinion is that hotel have great posibilities but not so exploited. Food is good but it could be a better - especially main meals. Rooms are solid and wide but they have to be cleaner. Hotel beach is wonderful and if you have seaview than it is a good shot. Rethymno town is great especially old town with their taverns and streets full of flovers. Crete - great island, you sholud have visit it.
