“Sleep in a cave!”
Reviewed 5 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

From searching for a holiday rental in Santorini for a family wedding we came across this property on several sites. I contacted the owner directly and she came back to me almost immediately. I cannot fault the booking process and communication by text and email was excellent. We were met at the airport by Julian and driven to our accommodation. I was excited to see the property and Iro the villa manager was extremely welcoming and showed us around with great care, offering great tips about the area and supplying her english mobile number which made it very easy to contact her. The property itself is nestled into the hillside and you would have to be mobile if considering staying here as it has many steps and steep hills. It is well equipped with a well stocked kitchen and a great selection of local wine , beer and bubbly was provided, which was a lovely touch. The bedrooms are all cave like in the rock face, tastefully decorated and complete with air con and fans. There are two shower rooms with toilets and you soon get used to the fact that no paper products can be flushed away so bin is provided. The information pack that has been put together is excellent and so useful. We booked a hire car from Sarah the owner whilst in the UK and i would say this is a must. They deliver it to you and pick up when you leave. you need to pay cash though. The WiFi works well in the living room and courtyard , but once in bed in the cave signal is lost. The sun deck pool terrace is accessed up some very steep steps but you soon get used to them. The pool is small and water cold, but very welcoming after sunning yourself. The terrace gets the sun in the morning up until early afternoon, so if you like to sunbathe plan accordingly. The Metaxy Mas Tavern is a five minute walk away from the property and had been recommended by Sarah the owner and she had made a booking for the first evening ( this is a must as without booking you may not get a table) and all I can say is WOW great food, location and such friendly staff. There are specials every night and the menu is not large but has just enough of a selection. Once seated you are given cheese olives and bread cubes and my particular favorite Ice cold Raki which gives you perfect time to select your dishes. There were five in our party so between us we sampled most of the menu and everything was excellent. To finish the taverna brings out sharing deserts on the house, the cheesecake is divine!. A meal for 5 with plenty of wine and beer will set you back about 120-150 euro just as a guide. Top tip do book again as you leave to ensure a table if you wish to eat there again.
There is a well stocked supermarket and bakery five minutes away by car so its easy to get supplies. The tap water is fine to wash in and clean teeth but you will need bottled water. We booked a traditional boat tour through Iro the manager and can highly recommend this a a day trip. we were taken to the volcano, then on to the hot springs for a swim and then on to Therasia where we had lunch. I would recommend seeing Santorini from the sea as it gives a different perspective. We visited OIA pronounced EAR a must in my opinion picture perfect views and architecture. It was busy in Oct so I can imagine in the height of the season it could be very busy. Well I hope this gives you all a taste of what to expect if you book to stay at Helios and visit Santorini and before I forget I must mention the CATS who we have called Itchy and Scratchy ( think Simpsons) that seem to live around the property, They are very friendly and two all black brothers, They love to bask in the sun but they are not allowed inside, and they do try at times but it is not too difficult to stop them. We did not feed them either as they looked well cared for and it is best not to encourage them either. To Sarah and Iro thank you we loved our stay and your Island.

“Lovely, relaxed stay.....”

This review is for mid June thru late July, 2016. Cavern House Helios was a wonderful place to stay for our 3 week vacation touring and relaxing in the Santorini area. Sarah, her house managers Iro and Leslie went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing, enjoyable and special. We dearly miss the house cats that adopted us during our stay and if weren't for the low doorframes we would definitely visit again. My husband kept hitting his head on the door frames so at over 6 feet tall, we would probably look elsewhere when we return to Santorini. Otherwise it was the best vacation we have ever had and I would definitely recommend to others who are looking for a lovely house, lovely managers and beautiful location.

“Quirky cave house”
Reviewed 29 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We really enjoyed our stay.
The house is great , fabulous views in a great location. Very centrally situated on the island away from the hustle and bustle of the major towns.
Although the house has air conditioning in the bedrooms we didn't need it as it's really cool even in the height of summer.
All in all a great place to stay.

“Unique lodging perched on a hillside”
Reviewed 18 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We had a wonderful time staying in this quaint cavern house located in the small town of Exo Gonia. Sarah is very organized and ensured that our stay was as pleasant as possible, arranging a car, and providing some treats and groceries to get us going (including a thoughtful bottle of champagne to celebrate our anniversary). The manager, Iro, was also very helpful and available. The house itself has a wonderful topside pool and lounging area, and the rooms were very cool and comfortable. I only give 4 stars because staying in a cave is a bit different and maybe not my favorite---it is a bit musty at times and cramped. However, it was well worth the experience as this is a typical sort of Santorini dwelling. We loved the rambling Cliffside trails, exploring the village. The view was lovely. The location is also very nice--away from the hustle and bustle of Fira, but easily accessible and quite close to the vineyards for wine tasting. We also really loved the local taverna recommended by Sarah--delicious food and a wonderful atmosphere with outdoor patio and great view. Overall a great experience.

“Fantastic cave house!”
Reviewed 2 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Stayed here in July. Wonderful place! Fabulous views. Cannot speak highly enough about the manager Iro - she was so helpful. We ate numerous times at the local taverna Metaximas - eaten there before in the past - definitely a must when visiting Santorini!
Thank you so much to Sarah and Eddy the owners

“Our home away from home.”
Reviewed 21 August 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We recently spent 5 weeks in Cavern House Helios with our small children (4 yr old and 16 mth old). This was the ideal spot for us to base ourselves on Santorini for the duration of our stay. Sarah & Kimberley organised our car hire for us, which was appreciated. We spent every second day travelling around the Island and the other days we spent at the various beaches. Kamari was our favourite with the children. We had a flight mix-up on the Sunday evening when we were due to arrive so were delayed until the Monday morning and a quick call to Kimberley to let her know and she was there to greet us bright and early. The house was beautifully kept with a weekly clean by Lesley, everything was neat and tidy and in good condition. The village of Exo Gonia is nice and quiet and a great place to rest and relax away from the tourist spots. Loved our stay and look forward to one day coming back to stay at one of Sarah & Eddie's properties in the future. Many thanks!

“Lovely house, full of character, perfect base for exploring island”

We all loved our stay at Cavern House and were very sorry to have to say goodbye.
Great location, though a rental car is necessary to fully enjoy all the island has to offer.
Santorini full of charm and you can hardly go wrong with your choice of beach or place to eat. We particularly enjoyed Perissa beach and experienced maginificent sunsets from all parts of the island.
Arrived on a bank holiday (Easter) and Sarah helped us out by booking us in to a restaurant and buying in a few supplies when all shops were closed.
Anybody considering staying here should definitely go for it.
