to get there, we took the sailing boat cruise which powers over to Nea Kameni for 1 1/2 hours to give you time to hike to the volcano top. It costs extra (2 euros) to make the hike but it was worth it for the views of Santorini and the caldera. The volcano itself isn't too much once at the top but it's a good hike and there were some fume-roles that were steaming and smoking thus showing that it is indeed still an active volcano. We did not have a guide nor were we offered one. The lady on the boat who was making the announcements on time and such said she was our guide but that was a loose term as she stayed on the boat the entire time.

A great visit. But go with a guide. Ours was brilliant. The island is home to a number of small volcanic craters, one of which is still active. But don't worry, the seismic equipment will give you,and the locals, 5 days notice of any activity! Definitely worth a visit.

Our first experience climbing a volcano… a dream come true. It’s worth the visit. From Fira, Nea Kameni looks flat and small, but when hiking it, it’s quite a challenge. Booked a tour and there was almost 50 of us. A piratey looking boat took us to the island. The tour guide stopped at a few spots to explain more about the volcano. Missed it coz I was left behind as I was busy snapping pictures. You have to stick close to the tour guide if you would like to know more about the volcano :)
Found it impressive as volcano climbing is not an activity you would get to do every day.

We booked our trip with Pelican Travel and it was the sunset caldera trip. The boat you go on is the Afroditi and it was beautiful, foods was served. We are lucky as we have noticed the few days we have been here that we were able to capture one of the best sunsets. Some days have been cloudy. Originally, the scheduled day we were to go on was very windy and it was cancelled although we did notice that in the afternoon the weather seemed fine and the cloud and wind had pretty much cleared. We got rescheduled for the next day and it didn't disappoint. Lovely music in the background on the boat. We went to the volcano and that was quite a walk. Take water and make sure you have good shoes (preferably trainers). The walk takes about 30-35 mins if you get to the end. The hot springs afterwards is a long swim. Probably about 50-60 metres. Only go for a swim to that if you are a good swimmer. I am not a good swimmer and don't like the sea but I love hot springs. I took a float with me and in the end didn't last, boyfriend had to help me. I will stick to hot springs in Japan. The sea is so choppy so this might be an activity you might have to miss if you are not good in water. We enjoyed the trip nevertheless.

We did the 2 hour tour with Pelican Travel during a cruise stop. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the guide was full of information. We stayed just enough time to enjoy the site, but not too long as to get overtired and overheated. This tour is very strenuous with a lot of climbing and the terrain is very treacherous in places. A certain level of fitness is required to make it to the top of the volcano. The fee of 2 euros is appropriate.
